I like many others filled out the failover page.

But despite the promise of an e-mail to confirm soon it is not good enough... is there stock for us who got that page? or are we going to get emails saying they are out and we have to wait until next week or the week after?

If there is stock then its a decent compromise because we would still get phones by Friday with any luck.

As for the change in policy to let us upgrade on Friday in store - I am pleased with that as at least those of us who don't get a phone online will still get one but I agree that having to queue at 7/8am is not exactly a pleasing thought! and there is always the chance there will be no phones left by the time we reach the front of the queue!

Add to that the waiting for 5 or less o2 employees to do new contracts and it will be a very long wait.

They should separate us out so that those whose information they already have (those of us on iPhone already) should be given priority as we should be in and out much quicker with all thge details already on the system!

Having worked at o2 - the upgrades process takes about 4-5 minutes, as long as you have a debit card with you that's linked to the same address as the address on your o2 account. They use the debit card to do an address check, put it through the till, and then you're done!

I asked if those of us who placed the order via the failover page would still be allocated an iPhone and he said yes. He wouldn't let himself commit to anything though, so take that with a pinch of salt.

Once we get the confirmations it should say anyway; if it's not going to arrive by Friday, cancel it and get one from an O2 high street store.

I assume it's simply a address check in store and not a credit check if you are already a o2 customer upgrading to the 3G iPhone?

Regarding the order status.

I just called them at 0870 225 7879 and a very kind guy told me that my order was accepted and the credit check was passed but there is not stock for my order. I placed it at 8:41 (that was the first email) and the web had stock until the 11:00 or so.

He told me that they will try to fulfil my order on 11th...

I can’t believe that they sold iphones without stock, imagine how many will have this problem if my order was at that time.

:(

Are you a new customer? I am and also managed to order by about 0810. Had my order confirmation email a few mins later, but as of yet no follow up to that - which the order confirmation email says there will be:

"We're just currently processing your request and we'll be in touch shortly to let you if it's been accepted and when it will be dispatched."

Yes I was a new customer, checking the status page on the o2 website...my order shows as "Dispatched" which is good as I choose Tuesday 8th for delivery....

Nah...I wish :) it just shows as "In Progress", still only received the same one mail from O2 following the order that they are currently processing your request

As a current O2 customer too, I believe I should also be rewarded for my loyalty. As such, it is really all these new customers, who have been able to order today that a am peeved at. I would just very much like to get my hands on my first iPhone on friday.

I'm a current (out of contract) O2 non-iPhone customer and managed to order a 16GB this morning. I've had three emails from O2. 08:55, 08:57 and 13:02. Order status currently at "In Progress". Still don't know whether I have an iPhone confirmed for Friday though.

you're lucky!!
i spent the best part of 4 hours on the failover page and waiting for the maintenance page to disappear!
had no luck in pre-ordering at all..

have to take chances on friday morning, but after today, i'm not convinced i'll get my 16gb :(

unless they only had 100 16gb's or so today

Next Day Delivery, iPhone 3G 8Gb Black Online 30 18 month In Progress

That is what mine says.

Next day delivery????????

I have also e-mailed the main board members of o2 complaining:

mycare at o2 mail.co.uk
mycarewebform at o2mail.co. uk
peter.erskine at o2. com
ronan.dunne at o2. com
matthey.key at o2. com
mark.stevenson at o2. com

I would suggest if your going to e-mail them that you are not rude - just explain what happened and make your point and include your phone number.

With any luck someone from o2 will be in touch and make sure we get the iPhones we pre-ordered on time as we should have or some other form of compensation.

The fact is that we now face a gamble of getting the phone we want from somewhere on Friday at an early time when we should be getting it in the post at home as a reward for being loyal customers.

-----------------------

As for getting the phone tommorrow - no way will that happen! don't be greedy you will have it on Friday unlike most of us here!

Oh for goodness sake, O2 doesn't have a duty to give anyone a get out of contract free card. What is the basis of your complaint? They were busy?

Would you complain at your local store if you queued up and then found out they were sold out? No. It's the same situation here, except there will be other opportunities to buy.

I don't actually see what is so exciting about iPhone 3G if you have the original already. By all accounts, it's going to be a lesser quality device which does all the things yours does plus two more. That's it! I've always been pining for GPS to tell me exactly where I am, but which can't tell me how to get somewhere unless I'm willing to tap the screen at every step.

As for 3G data, I'm willing to bet that a lot of your initial time using the device is in your own home, where there's probably WiFi.

Chill out, if you don't get iPhone 3G on Friday you'll still get 2.0 for your original iPhone.

If it was a question of first come first served then I would not have a problem.

But firstly o2 promised everyone that pre-registered they would get an iphone as a result then they put it on general sale to everyone at the same time.

The website was unprepared and to make matters worse the normal o2 shop had next to no problems compared to the upgrades which was one disaster after another.

I had 20 codes sent and the rest of the time I couldn't even get on that page.

Then there is the failover page - no confirmation - nothing - what happened to my credit card details? are they safe? I have no idea.

I was online as soon as it started and I couldn't get an order in - that is bad planning and a bad excuse for customer service specially for existing customers.

Your right there is no requirement for them to let us upgrade but they said they would and they they made a big deal of the pre-registration and then they let the majority of us down by changing their minds and making a mess of the site.

I can take not getting any due to lack of stock because I didn't try and buy one till 5pm but not when I was on at 8am or 9am.

That is what I am complaining about.

What will happen as a result of my complaint? who knows.

Maybe my failover order will be fine and I will get a comfirmation in the next few days anyway but regardless they messed it up big time and someone should point that out to them if they didn't know already (and I am sure they did) but sometimes a customers perspective is useful.

Lesser quality how?

Anyway, can't hurt to drop into the O2 store on my home from work tomorrow... I pass both an O2 store and a Carphone Warehouse on my way to work :)

The back of the 3G model is plastic. That's the only issue that's been bothering me about this new version. I know it's supposedly to improve reception, etc, but the brushed aluminium back was just so pretty :(

We'll see. Apple didn't just magically get the price down by leaving things as they are. I bet come Friday we'll have a few people who are concerned by the way their iPhone 3G is built.

I don't think it was a marketing ploy as such although O2 would have been aware that their on-line stock would be insufficient to meet demand.

Exactly, they knew how may people were interested in the iphone and they knew how may phones were in their first delivery. Its a c**k up, plain and simple. O2 arent clever enough to come up with such a marketing ploy!

And now everybody is going to have to queue at O2, Apple stores and CPW. It still generates marketing headlines for them and more hype. Which they lacked in the last UK launch.

Theres a very easy way to stick it to O2 on the launch day and to stop them being the only carrier, but nobody will like or do it.

We just sit and wait for a week or so, which we'll have to probably do anyway and then O2 will a bad release day headline, Apple will know about it and think twice about their Uk carrier.

Simple! But how many people can hold out that long!:D

Yeah, given that they had hundreds of thousands of people register - and they sent an email to ALL of those people telling them to go order, they knew full well what was going to happen.

Ultimately, it's just one of those things - there's no way to do this peicemeal, might as well just open the floodgates and get it over with, which is fair enough. This translates, hopefully, to fewer people going out to stores on Friday - so fewer people in front at the queues!
