^^^ you're right on the money.

I recall that VV was a major distinction highlighted by AT&T customers. Now we have a new phone offered with contract without that feature, so it's obviously not that big of a deal anymore.

The iphone will always be handicapped by its controversial (some may deem them fair) tariffs which are a result of carriers passing on the costs of the whole profit sharing model. Apple has to maintain proactivity in the cessation of unlocking if they want to have any leverage in future carrier negotiations. But with so many avoiding these plans, people will use ebay if they cannot unlock phones themselves purchased from Apple. It will be interesting to see how this goes.

So what does this mean, exactly?

Is this just a data plan? Looks really expensive.

I don't care. I'll just stick with good old phone calls and SMS. I don't think I think I can live without data.

Rogers in Canada has admitted, "We're not fans of unlimited plans," Rob Bruce, the president of Rogers' wireless division, told analysts during a conference call. "We want to make sure ... that we create plans that are helpful and don't become barriers to adoption." "You're putting enormous pressure on your network... if you give people a buffet at a fixed price, they eat a lot."

Looks like Rogers Mobility infrastructure sucks... Remember Rogers High Speed Internet problems... bottleneck, slowdowns and crashes over the network. They know what Apple data-hungry iPhone in Canada will do along with Blackberry. iPhone has different data compression than Blackberries.

So if Ireland has 1GB data limit, I can see the same thing here, you go over, you pay more. That looks like why Rogers put a Tier program based on your usage. 1 Gb is alot if not unlimited. Good Start for a change, it will get better.

Good for those in Ireland but those tarrifs for the service are steep. Wow!

eeesh

Man that looks a bit steep. Makes my AT&T rates look decent in comparison. Plus, unlimited data was key in my decision to get an iPhone. I'm fairly certain that I wouldn't have made the plunge without that offering. It's unfortunate that others don't have the option/availability. Ireland has suffered enough throughout history, telecoms don't need to add to it today. ;)

Are the high prices in Ireland and Germany due to the Euro, or just the companies being stingy?

With tariffs like that, is it any wonder that most phones are PAYG in Ireland?

I've recently ended my contract with O2, and I have no ambitions to go back to them.

Those rates are pretty ridiculous considering for a similar price with Verizon now offering completely unlimited calling, texting, and data to any network.

Higher education is free in Ireland as is are health care. Also, we don't pay any property tax. Moving on, I think I'll pass on the iPhone at those rates.

Yes, but there's a reason we get the most international students. We may not have the best elementary/secondary education system, but we have the best higher education, bar none. Our higher education can be free, depending on the state, and depending on your merit, and even on your income level. I'd rather have our system, than a monstrous tax rate like Sweden does.

Actually, there was never a chance of that happening. It was all Internet hype.

You're not serious. Are you saying that he didn't exist? He is not El Chupacabra or something, he is a real person who was, and is on ballots. I assume you are one of the zombified millions that are ruining things for the rest of us by believing the news.

P.S. Those Irish tariffs are so unbelievably bad. I've been wanting to move there from the US as I am a dual citizen, but everything seems so crazy expensive and I would take a massive salary cut as well. I lived in London for 3 years and that was expensive, but it's a working class utopia compared to Ireland.

But Ireland's tax burden is very low, IIRC it's almost as low the US, but we still manage relatively free third level education.

that's why im never going to switch to at&t their contract price is outragioud.
My verizon wireless bill a month is only like 45 a month plus taxes.
This is what I get from verizon for all that.
unlimited in txt messages
unlimited in pix flix and video MSG
Unlimited night Nd weekend
so yeah that's all I get for 45 a month

Correct, Ireland is a low-tax country - certainly lower than the US and far lower than most of Europe. However, much of this is due to very, very low corporate tax.

I don't think that's the issue here though. Ireland is a very small economy, and the overhead costs of setting up any new venture here are spread out among a small population, hence high prices. A smaller economy also tends to attract fewer entries, thus less competition and higher prices.

Income tax as a % of GDP is lower too. The overall tax burden here is low, and public services are being stripped back over the last few years. The thing is we manage to be a low tax economy with public services such as health and education that are still far better than the US, albeit, not up to European standards.

In Europe, Family and Health comes first, that's why Europeans are happier and rested.

Uhmm... Yeah...I could definitely see that with the way they complain here for a freakin phone:rolleyes:. Every country is skewed one way or another.:p

Is this really good news?

I'm ambivalent about the release of the iPhone here in Ireland. I've been waiting for months for it to come out (along with the MBP!) and now it's here the price plan sucks . However I'm going to the States this weekend and will buy an iPhone and a MPB to take full advantage of the exchange rate:D. I was hoping I'd get more novelty time with the phone...

I'm already with O2 but I'm thinking of switching to maybe 3 (one of our new networks) as they offer a better data plan rate;

€29 for 200mins
€20 for Unlimited Broadband (fine print = 2GB/month)
No texts included (€6 for 100messages add-on)

A better deal, I think, as I don't text that much and I will use the internet apps...And Visual voicemail is not currently supported either.

Does anyone have any further thoughts on this? It'd be much appreciated:).
Also, does anyone know if Google Maps will be supported on an unlocked iPhone, I haven't much hands-on experience with them yet. Cheers:)

The crappy price plans are due to 02 being a total rip-off.
I recently inquired to a member of 02 staff about the data palns O2 offer as I was looking at switching and received this repsonse:
Here is a little about what we offer for Internet users on O2. We have the standard surf the net connection meaning you can go on any website through your phone but we also have a mail system that allows you to adapt your phone to your personal or business address (basically similar to outlook express).

The price plans for using the internet and data are as follows:

Browsing with O2 Mobile Internet is only 1c per kilobyte. All the sites have been specially adapted for your mobile and therefore quick and easy to download.

All O2 pages are FREE to browse so you'll only be charged when you enter into a content provider's Mobile Internet site.

Browsing: 1c per kilobyte
Browsing My O2 pages: Free
Send I-mail: 15c per mail
Receive I-mail : Free
Send and Receive My Mail: 1c per kilobyte
Subscriptions Cost

Data Bundles:
Pay monthly customers can save by signing up for a data bundle option. You will then be charged a set rate per month and given an allowance of MBs (Megabytes) to use each month.

Bundle name Cost Cost per KB Cost peradditional MB
Data 10 €9.99 for usage up to 10MB 0.00098 € 1
Data 25 €19.99 for usage up to 25MB 0.00078 € 1

All this information and more about using the Internet while you are roaming and how to monitor your use is on the O2 website at the following link:

http://www.o2online.ie/wps/wcm/connect/O2/Home/Personal/Services/O2+Mobile+internet/Pricing

Let me know how you get on and if you want to sign up for any particular plan just drop me a mail back and I will get Customer Care to get you up and running.

Hope that helps,

Data Plans for Pay As You Go (prepay) on the different Irish networks:
02: 10euro per MB
Three: 0.06euro per MB on lowest data add-on (6 Euro for 100MB)
Metoer: About 4.50euro per MB.
Vodafone: I'm not too sure but they do have an unlimited add-on I think.

Even on Pay Monthly the best value is Euro20 for only 25MBs.
I'm on prepaid Three and would only 1.50Euro for 25MBs.

biggest con i ever seen
you have to pay for an overprice phone
you get 1 GB of data, which is enough to read the weather forcast.
you have 100 texts? one hundred texts? what is it? you only have 1 friend in the world?
you have to pay 45 euro per month after paying 499 euro for an overprice phone. did i said overprice phone twice?
i did not realise the irish consumers are a bunch of fool.
