Very excited about this. I'm an American and I've desperately wanted an iPhone but as I may be moving to Ireland in 6 months I've held off.

Now I'm wondering, if I bought an iPhone here in the US and brought it over to Ireland could I legally activate it with O2 even though it's a US phone? I remember reading something about people buying the iphone in the UK and bringing it back over to the US and be able to activate it with AT&T. Though that could be a myth.

If not, I'm contemplating just unlocking it. That way I'd be able to use it both here and there and avoiding the contract if my living situation changes.

biggest con i ever seen
you have to pay for an overprice phone
you get 1 GB of data, which is enough to read the weather forcast.
you have 100 texts? one hundred texts? what is it? you only have 1 friend in the world?
you have to pay 45 euro per month after paying 499 euro for an overprice phone. did i said overprice phone twice?
i did not realise the irish consumers are a bunch of fool.

Apple's got no way to win when it comes to this kind of exaggeration.

1GB isn't enough to read the weather? What is it with people? There's no grey in the world anymore; things either make people euphoric or it's a total rip-off.

Jesus christ man..

I live 5 hours from the US border... less if I go through Buffalo... what the F**k is taking them so long to launch this damn phone in Canada.

argh... IRELAND?? really?? before your closest neighbours.. le sigh.

Guys you really aren't going to use 1GB of EDGE data in a month. Seriously.

I use my iPhone all the time and have clocked up less than 1GB since the UK launch date

But Ireland's tax burden is very low, IIRC it's almost as low the US, but we still manage relatively free third level education.

Yeah we have our problems but things aren't too bad here... are they ???

We like to moan a lot and we are often ripped off for things over europe and we generally pay a lot more for electronics, cars, food etc...

Our Tax & VAT levels are hefty

It's always bloody raining (they don't call it the Emerald Isle for nothing)

Our politicians are on the take for a few grand, and then we spend millions upon millions investigating it - only for no outcome.

Our broadband infrastructure is 5 years behind the rest of europe

We have NO Apple Retail stores even though we have an Apple HQ

Our roads have bigger pot holes than bombed up ones in Iraq

oh and back on topic..... our mobile tarrifs are bloody ripp off compared to UK :(:(:(

HEY!!! All you Canadians STOP MOANING NOW!!! There are a number of reasons why Apple have not classed you 'worthy' of the iPhone yet...

Alannis Morrisette, Brian Adams & Celine Dion...... Say no more :p

Europeans on average use about 100 MB per month, not that much. But it can change rapidly with 3G support, extra 3P apps and networked games.

Just done the math...

DataPlan rate is ok when you consider the alternative Pay as you Go pricing.

O2 charge 1c per 1kb

1,000kb = 1mb
1,000mb = 1gb

So thats €10 per 1 mb

Thats €1,000 per 1 GB

Makes that €45 tariff seem positivly giving it away doesn't it... ;):D

I'm almost certain they use less than 100MB a month on average. As much as people go on about 3G, as a whole people do not use the internet extensively on their phones.

4 million irish, 22 million Australians, 30 million Canadians on HIS DOORSTEP!

Stupid apple. (yes i am bitter)

Hehe, close, but it's actually 21 million Australians and 32 million Canadians ... but who's counting :)

Australia suffers from the UK treasure island syndrome. Telstra, from it's Telecom Australia monopoly days, leads the way in charging more and offering less. The other players like Optus and Vodafone/Virgin are a minor presence in comparison.

Canada has a similar monopoly protectionist mentality in the telecom industry. Rogers bought up Fido (think Microsoft) when they started offering Canadians plans that undercut their monopoly. The CRTC as a federal regulator should never have let that happen. There are no other GSM operators.

Actually... I think that just shows how messed up mobile data rates are - not how "good" a deal the tariff is.

I take the religious sentiment but Ireland is the major Hub of European software production, including Microsoft, Google and Apple HQ's. We also make most of the Viagra in the world (in Cork nonetheless) so we know where you can put it:cool:...

O2 are a joke...

Wow, those tariff's are appalling! Even if they are standard across all the mobile service providers in Ireland. That's shocking.

On a side note - I got rid of my iPhone because O2 are quite possibly one of the worst companies I have EVER had to deal with. It started off badly when I got a bill for £85 after 2 days of using my iPhone. The customer service was a disgrace and they have still not managed to sort out the mess they created back in December! Whilst I appreciate that a lot of people will have had no bother with O2 but problems with other mobile providers, it's still good to know how a company treats it's customers.

On the other hand, I have been with Vodafone for a long time now and they have ALWAYS bent over backwards to help me out and deliver good customer service. I wouldn't say excellent - but definitely good. Apple, have given me excellent service.

Whilst this may not be the 'right' thing to do, I would seriously recommend unlocking the iPhone so you are not tied to a company like O2 for as long as you have an iPhone.

Just my opinion from my own experiences.

Off topic but I couldn't resist...

Bloody Louis Walsh!! Burning's too good for him ;):p

And leave poor Daniel alone. He's Ireland very own Cliff Richard (and just as much in the closet) :D

Not all Three phones are 3G enabled so I presumed the iPhone would work on EDGE alone. It's not looking good... :( Anyone else with any luck with the Three network?

Nah lad, I tried O2, Meteor & Vodafone.. All worked. But the Three sim just didn't work at all with me ? So not sure what the deal was with that ? Maybe it's cos i'm a Kerryman ;) :p

its about time apple im on o2 bill pay at the mo so im payimg 50 euro for my plan
at the mo so the price it not to bad for me so off to my local o2 store to put my 100 euro deposit on tge phone

and apple wants to compete against unlocking wow good luck apple, why is it so darn hard to just unlock it really somebody explain to me :mad:hell my country will never see the iphone :p

Phone Activation
After you have connected, activating your iPhone will be easy and can be done from the comfort of your own home.

iPhone is restricted for use on the O2 Ireland network unless you are roaming. If you do not enter into and remain in an applicable agreement with O2 on one of our tariffs for iPhone, you will not be able to use the phone functionality of your iPhone. If you attempt to unlock iPhone and use it on another network, it may become permanently unusable.

Making unauthorised modifications to the software on your iPhone violates the iPhone software license agreement, and the inability to use your iPhone due to unauthorised software modifications is not covered under your iPhone's warranty. This is on O2, apple is really being strict about unlocking

Domestic generally means as long as you stay in the country, but I can see them basically putting in the same rules as Suncom has.

You are correct that domestic means the whole country. I actually have the T-Mobile plan and can confirm that it is indeed a national plan. I'm guessing he doesn't live in the US? I thought it was widely known what 'domestic' means here.
