Well, this is a British thread, sarcasm's to be expected ;)

You're not paying the unsubsidised price for the 3GS. If you choose to sign up to another contract you once again pay a subsidised price for the phone. The only 3GS price that is unsubsidised is the price of the PAYG phone.

But what everyone who doesn't agree with you is saying is that this is not the contract you agreed to, therefore O2 is not in anyway obliged to provide this. Additionally, I haven't ever heard of another provider going down this route either (feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, just personal experience).

It makes bad business sense, you signed their contract therefore they can make you honour the monthly payment. Nothing in the contract says they'll give you the option to buy out the contract at only the cost of the remaining subsidy. There are arguments that they will lose customers in the long run through this, yes, but the fact remains that you are not entitled to anything. If you don't like it you shouldn't have signed the contract.

Yeah, you're completely right. I guess everyone, me included, is just a bit fed up of the situation. It's never bothered me before, having to see out a contract(Though I refused in the past to sign an 18 month contract and onlt signed this one before there was no other way to get a 3G on launch). At the end of the day it is a phone, in which you are tied to a contract, like any Nokia, Samsung etc. It just feels different, being an iPhone.

The whole 18 month contract, that they started bringing in a few years back has messed things up. Apple users want the latest and greatest and an 18 month deal doesn't fit in with Apple and their policy of releasing products every year.

I'm not upgrading anyway now, if I did sign for another 18 months and get the new iPhone, I'd be in the same boat this time next year. If I get the new iPhone in December I'll be taking away any chance of getting iPhone4.

Besides, one iPhone with light leaks, cracking in the plastic, dust under the screen etc is enough! Maybe iPhone 4th Gen may sort out shoddy build quality and everyone will be glad they couldn't upgrade ;)

I just called O2, and they confirmed that you can indeed buy a Pay & Go 3GS and just swap over the SIM cards with your 3G, so your contract just continues on the new phone. I need to give this one some serious thought!

I am big quoting this for usefulness.

I know :( That was the main reason I was hoping they'd change it. If I broke my 2G I wouldn't be all that impressed with the quality of my "upgrade"

I got bored of reading some of the comments going round in circles, but still wanted to comment, so apologies if this has already been touched on.

I have a 2G iPhone, which I've had running on Orange UK since Nov 2007 when the unlock came out and I'd love to move to the newer version if only for the 3G speeds (nothing else really got my attention from the keynote) so luckily I'm not having to pay any buy out fee's etc. and will be a new customer.

I think that this years iPhone is expensive but c'mon who wasn't expecting that. The current (2008 model) is £400 on Pay & Go, so guess what? I started saving when the rumors started and Phil made his speach about product cycles back in January. I still don;t have enough mind, but hey ho.

I think that O2 and Apple have the right to sell this device at the prices they've chosen. Apple because of all the work that has gone into it, and O2 if for no other reason than they are going to be paying for a lot more data transfer from next friday onwards (all three iPhones)

You could probably sell your 2G for a not bad price still if it's in good condition.

I missed out on the 2G 1st gen. Looking back, I still prefer it and wish I'd bought it. Infact I'd probably be happy with a 1st Gen with 3.0! Though I do use the GPS/maps quite a lot(one of the draws of 3GS is the digital compass for me)

Mmm GPS would have been nice since I'm prone to getting lost. My Google Maps "current location" button has become less reliable since I switched to T-Mobile. Last time I used it it said I was about 3 miles away from my actual location
