What do I expect from the new PB's?

New, higher-resolution screens:

12": 1152×864
15": 1440x900
17": 1680x1050

This suggestion assumes that 12" will stay as it is, no widescreen. if it gets widescreen, it could run at 1280 x 800, making it HD-capable.

Updated vid-cards. Superdrives in all models, dual-layer. CPU's:

12": 1.6Ghz 7448
15": 1.7Ghz 7448
17": 1.8Ghz 7448

Even the 12" PB would outperform the current top-of-the-line 17" PB. And maybe the 12" model could also get backlit-keyboard?

Maybe I'm asking for too much. Then again, maybe not :)

NO NO NO!

it's NOT a new ipod mutation...

it's not a new PB or PM either...

it WILL be an Apple Smartphone!

yes, airport ready (wi-fi), 3G, iLife ready (iCal, AddressBook, Mail, etc), iTunes ready... work it out people... The iPod is the cream of the cream... been there done that.... Nano's, Phones, etc etc...

Apple have not bothered with a PDA since the - ahem - the Newton!

Work it out - Windoze PDA's been around for a while and about to fully launch Windows Mobile 5 OS...

Where is the competition??? Come on Stevie baby... SURPRISE US!!

It would rather be "true" HD display: 1920x1200
well HD is 1920x1080 but that extra rows would keep within the form factor of 16x10 ratio the current 17" screen is. Just more pixels.

The main issue is that the grphx card must handle and decode h.264 in realtime for HD content to be displayed.

The same grphx card must go into the new mac mini as well.
(I know I don't say the iMac G5 because there is no output to better screens on them)
But the mini and the powerbooks should (and will) have those features.

the mactels will be great! intel has already got a dual core 3.2ghz chip. and their single cores are already at 3.8ghz. OSX will be a beast when they switch.

and power books will be rediculous

Hint: Mhz does not matter. Apple will not use those 3.2 and 3.8GHz CPU's, they will use different CPU-family from Intel.

It's not like "2.8Ghz P4 is faster than 2.7GHz G5, because P4 has more megaherts!"

no kidding. i'm just saying the intel processors are going to kick the g5's ass. obviously steve thinks the mhz matters, he probably isn't too happy ibm couldn't deliver on his promise to have a g5 3ghz by the time he said they would.

What I am more intrigued about is the idea of the Power Mac getting a new enclosure. How sick would that be?
Some little changes might happen (look how El Capitan evolved) but I think a totally new enclosure will wait for Intel Macs.

Apple aquires Pixar!!

Jobs salary raised to $2! Ha!!

"Oh, and one more thing....a while back i made a promise and ate some crow. We got Mactel's done a little bit early. Here's your 3Ghz Mac. Did I mention it's a dualcore 3Ghz?" S. Jobs

Mhz matter inside the CPU-family. But using it to compare different CPU-families (like G5 and P4) is utterly pointless. A64 runs at a considerably lower Mhz than P4 does, yet they run circles around P4 in many occasions.

my prediction:

-New Powerbooks with dual core in top model and a new case design...

Unlikely since the dual-core G4 won't ship in volume until mid-2006 and a new case design won't be logical until they start using Intel chips. More likely is the 7448 w/faster FSB and DDR2 memory, upgraded GPU with HD display, dual-layer Superdrive, and faster hard drive.

Heh, heh... :D

It'll be the iCar, featuring an iFission engine, with iRadar so you don't get caught at iSpeed, with an iPod Video fitted into an iHeads-Up-Display so you can drive while watching your favorite music video, with a HD iWindshield that gives you more iLife choices...

Sorry... couldn't resist. :D

My predictions (wishes) for the new Powerbook:

Faster G4 processor at 2Ghz or 2.2Ghz. Possibly dual-cored in the top model.
New chipset supporting DDR2-533/667 memory (much faster and low-power)
PCI-E graphics support (new ATI x1x00 cards, delay possibly related)
SATA hard drive support (faster throughput, eliminates disk bottleneck)
HD WUXGA+ LCD screens, XBRITE-esque
EXPRESSCARD slot replacing PCMCIA for future upgradability
Dual-DVI out on all models
Increased battery life.

Thats what i would love to see in the new PBs.

Would they really design new cases for only 12 months or so (Before Intel) ?

The last G4's had slightly redesigned cases (quicksilver, mirror door)..

point taken, but i still think by the time mac goes to intel, the intels will be better than the G5's

this seems realistic

Evangelion my friend, I was thinking the exact same thing here. These upgrades can be done without any enclosure modifications, so it seems pretty realistic. All you need to add is a standard 100gb HD, and we're golden.

I know a lot of people thing it's a crappy CPU bump, but from what I've read, the 7448 will actually move pretty fast. PLUS, it uses a lot less power... so the battery should last a lot longer, and hopefully the machine will run cooler too.

Bumping the res on the 12" will make it a winner for me. Please please please please please...

One of the worst Apple designs. Apple please don't mess up the beauty of the current G5 design.

Backlit Keyboard a Plus

I never understood why they could just not put a backlit keyboard in the 12" also. Whats that going to cost, another $1.00? And bumping the resolution on the 12" or expanding to a 13" WS would be awesome.

Some people think that the 12" is a waste of time. I keep mine on the desk in clamshell 90% of the time and use it outside of my office when I preach or teach. I went from the G5 tower back to the Powerbook for the portability alone that 10% of the time. The 12" is awesome for me. It is light, compact and I keep it in a messenger bag that doesn't scream STEAL ME!

I hope Mr Jobs is watching here. He has us all drinking the kool-aid now.

Wow. People are really tearing apart Think Secret here.

First of all, they reaffirmed their previous post about powermacs and powerbooks by giving more details into exactly what those updates might entail.

Although sometimes they do switch their responses, you have to admit that they have been the most accurate site in the past few years, hands down.

I didn't see much in the way of details being provided, just stuff we already knew from when Appleinsider reported on these new PowerBooks two months ago...

http://www.appleinsider.com/article.php?id=1229

ThinkSecret has been flip-flopping all year and have been hit or miss like any other rumor site. They are being torn apart only because people treat them as an infallible source.

There is just no way it's a phone unless Apple has reached some agreement with Cingular. And it's my understanding that Cingular isn't exactly excited about the ROKR. Phone are heavily subsidized because what really makes the carriers money are the contracts. For example, the Motorola RAZR might actually cost $500 retail but it's as much a marketing tool as a piece of electronics.

Also consider that Apple isn't a phone maker, they would have to invest in the physical and intellectual capital needed to start producing phones and I would imagine that would be no small investment. And they would be directly competing with Motorola, Nokia, and the like.

Apple too is worried about creating too nice a phone and cannibalizing its own sales of the Nano and Shuffle. Why do you think the ROKR has so very little memory?

Lastly, and I believe the biggest hurdle, is that Apple can't control the carriers, they have no control over the distribution of services. Cingular and Motorola are definitely developing new iTunes enabled phones, but not Apple....

No, no, no, NO! There will be NO dual-core PowerBooks! 2Ghz MIGHT be possible in the hi-end model, but not likely.

Evangelion, doesn't it amaze you how some people refuse to listen... or read the forum messages, especially those where people like you and I repeatedly try to explain that some things are simply not possible right now?
