Evangelion, doesn't it amaze you how some people refuse to listen... or read the forum messages, especially those where people like you and I repeatedly try to explain that some things are simply not possible right now?

yeah really--A G5 1.6 gHz in a PB seems more likley than a dualcore G4 at any speed; weren't the low-power G5s announced a little earlier? Note that I am NOT expecting a G5 PB, just comparing the relative probabilities. The 7448 is the best we'll get, 200 FSB will be a needed improvement as well as the 7448's better power management. I REALLY wish we'd be getting PCI express GPUs, but that just isn't going to happen. ATI Mobility 9800 is the best AGP option, fits the form factor, etc., and is the best we can expect. The DDR2 ram is kind of a funny addition, because I remember reading somewhere that the memory is actually too fast for the 7448 and that you'd really need a G5 to take full advantage of it. Finally, I hope that we get more BTO options for hard drives. I'd love to drop a 100GB 7200rpm travelstar in there but would rather do it BTO than pay $280 plus $100 in labor later to have a 3rd party do it.

Cingular and Motorola are definitely developing new iTunes enabled phones, but not Apple....
There were recent rumors about iTunes 5 for Windows Mobile.

Yes, I know the screenshots could have been 'shopped, and there are indications that it might be a scam. However, what if there's some truth to it, and part of the announcement next week is a PDA/smartphone. Wait for it....

Specifically a Windows Mobile based PDA/smartphone with iLife for Windows Mobile included.

(runs and ducks for cover).

The Tundra TSI 108 Host Bridge for the 7448 DOES support PCI-X, and DDR 2 (which I read matches the bus speed). It can also be used for Dual PROCESSORS...not like that is about to happen.

It's definitely a G5 PowerBook

Steve always makes a big deal about new PowerBooks as they are one of the most popular offerings.

Merom based MacTel Laptops are still a year away. Pro Intel native software won't be ready for a year to 1.5 years.

Apple could release the following just before christmas shopping season.

PowerBook G5 @ 1.8 to 2.0 Ghz
2 mb L2 cache with 900mhz - 1ghz FSB
new PCI-Express bus graphics subsystem with user upgradable GPU cards.requires 10.4.3 update
New ATI X800 mobility as std confg
SATA- 5400 to 7200 HD
New HD 16x9, 1920x1080 enhanced LCD display
new PB G5 utilizes the brand new low-power IBM G5
extended battery life to 6 hours

ALong with the PB will be updated PM dual dual-core G5
new PCI-Express bus subsystem requires 10.4.3 update
SATA- 7200 to 10,000 rpm drives
new cinema displays 16x9

Updated Airport Express video output

updated itunes to support short video

updated ipods utilizing bigger drives and updated colors.

New G5 PB will be last of the PPC line but will overlap with the release of the Intel merom mactel next year.

...it's nowt to do with new products and those curtains mean "exit, Stage Left". Prepare for a tearful farewell as someone pockets a multimillion dollar gold watch (that I've contributed almost €3000 toward) and then heads into the sunset for a quiet life on his luxury yacht moored off Rio.

You made me not get any sleep.....

Contemplating the possibility that Steve will call it a day, due to health reasons orso.
Or quit on a high....

I predict moderate speed bumps for PowerMac:
PowerMac G5 2.3 Dual
PowerMac G5 2.7 Dual
PowerMac G5 3.0 Dual

Similar bumps to PowerBook line, maybe new monitors, but highly unlikely.

Why Not New PB & PM

I have read enough to know that we wont see G5 PB's - but it sounds like we may see duel core PM's. So with a Intel Mac's a year away (if they wait on the intel chips they want), why wouldn't we see a cosmetic re-launch of the existing line?

A year is a life-time in the computer world, especially when the line is really a few years old already. So why not something to keep us happy until we have to buy into Intell? It might not be huge, but new displays, new HD options, and a new form factor/look would be a way to breath a little life back into what has gone beyond aging, to aged...

Also, why would Steve leave now? On the eve of one of the biggest changes in recent memory when they switch to intel?

Wishful thinking from someone who wants to switch to Mac, can bring himself to shell out $2500 for a 15" lap-top that seems to be spec'd like a $900 dell. (and I acknowledge its not an appples to apples comparisison... but on paper).

Damn, I will have to buy a Mac Mini for my Dad tomorrow here in Switzerland, since I am travelling to see him on Sunday...right when the Minis are going to be upgraded..!

On the other hand, any update is gonna make little difference to him, since he is on an old Pentium with Windows 98, hehehe..! :p

PCI-X is not the same thing as PCI Express, they are 2 different slot types.

That would be great, but I somehow fear that it will not happen. But a 7200 rpm drive simply is so much better than an additional 100 MHz.

What do I expect from the new PB's?

New, higher-resolution screens:

12": 1152×864
15": 1440x900
17": 1680x1050

This suggestion assumes that 12" will stay as it is, no widescreen. if it gets widescreen, it could run at 1280 x 800, making it HD-capable.

Updated vid-cards. Superdrives in all models, dual-layer. CPU's:

12": 1.6Ghz 7448
15": 1.7Ghz 7448
17": 1.8Ghz 7448

Even the 12" PB would outperform the current top-of-the-line 17" PB. And maybe the 12" model could also get backlit-keyboard?

Maybe I'm asking for too much. Then again, maybe not :)
backlit keyboard on the 12 would be awesome. Wouldnt you think it would go more like this though
12'' or 13'' hd:1.8 Ghz
15":1.9
17'':2.0
they say the 7448 goes up to around 2.0 ghz so why not?

The Apple Store UK currently has a 2-3 week wait for 15" Superdrive Powerbooks suggesting that it might well happen.

That is my dream computer.... if it gets the update I might just go ahead! Well, maybe I'd settle for a 12"

If Steve was going to quit he would definately go out with a bang.

Picture G5 Powerbooks, Dual Tri Quad core PowerMacs, Intel Minis and for everyone else out there the video iPod.

That guy is all class

Has any one have seen this on MacInTouch

Here is a clip of it:
Both updated Power Mac and PowerBook systems are expected to use DDR2 memory, delivering performance improvements beyond the typical processor speed bumps. At least one Power Mac G5 configuration will feature IBM's PowerPC 970MP dual-core processor, while PowerBooks are expected to see their PowerPC 7447A processor replaced with a slightly faster 7448 model.

So the G5 PowerMac with 970MP is going to be the "one more thing..."
Oh well, here is to year 2006, drink up. :D

I can't keep track of all of the threads about the Oct 12 event so I forget if I said it here or somewhere else.... Anyway, I'm hoping that the "one more thing" refers to the entire event  Nothing so far has convinced me that the "one more thing" refers to a single product to be released.

Think of it along the lines of Jobs saying "We hoped to release updated PowerMacs and PowerBooks a few weeks ago but there were some delays. So now we are going to release them at the same time as our new video iPod. Obviously the updated computers aren't as impressive as the iPod, but when we announce them all together it makes for a better media event."
(That's a bit of a mouthful so he just settled for "one more thing....")

Of course, this is just me hoping that everyone gets what they asked for :)

I had thought the delay in the new ATI PCI Express graphics cards, released yesterday, caused the delay in the 970MP PowerMacs, but it doesn't appear that all the cards are both Mac and PC compatible like I had expected. In that case I expect one or more of those cards to come out in Mac special editions.

Because of something I read today, I'm wondering if those cards could be used to overcome the upcoming loss of Altivec, with OSX using the GPU if it is available:

...ATI plans to open the hardware architecture of the X1000 to allow third party developers to write non-graphics-related applications to run on the graphics processor. The company calls this feature "dynamic load balancing." Compared to a Pentium 4 CPU, which delivers a floating point performance of 12 GFLOPs and a bandwidth of just under 6 GByte per second, a graphics processor is a calculation monster: According to ATI, an X1800 XT chip reaches 83 GFlops and 42 GByte per second. ... Similar features have been demonstrated by academic projects in the past on ATI and Nvidia platforms, but dynamic load balancing as described by ATI officials promises a whole new use of graphics processors.

This sounds like a logical progression or evolution, but I'm not sure how practical it is. With Mac OS X and Quartz Extreme (and QuickTime 7) Apple has been pushing more and more graphics and graphics-related processing onto the GPU. But the trend for CPUs is towards multiple cores as a solution to the load-balancing problem. GPU vendors would love to expand the use of their chips into new territories, but it's not clear how practical it will be to write multi-threaded code that spans more than one target processor at the same time without needing to employ some type of emulation or precompiled library.

Libraries like Shader Model 3.0 are precompiled for the GPU, but this does not constitute "dynamic load-balancing." Dynamic load-balancing really means that if the main CPU is bogged down, the OS can invoke new processes or new threads on another CPU, hence the entire thread or process must be able to run on the other processor.

THE Announcement

M$ is going to buy Apple...and change OS Tiger to Vista name...and launch that early next year...

It's a good thing Apple has NEVER disappointed our expectations. :p ;)

My prediction: Instead of bothering with newer G5s in the PowerMac, Apple will just dump a Power5+ quad chip in there, and cool it all with the blood of fallen BeOS users.
