ooh, I would like the 12" to have the illuminated keyboard, as I do a lot of night time typing, and that's be handy!!

I just don't find the need, if you know how to type. Furthermore, the screen puts out some light, if there was a key you really needed to see.

However, in the end, I want too! It looks cool!

backlit KB is very helpful to people who use a laptop to play music live. the keys in some cases can be used as a note keyboard for playing virtual synths or triggering things to happen etc. very helpful to have a little extra focus on what keys you are hitting when ina dark smokey club after having a few bears.

plus it looks cool ;)

Ok, yes, I can see why drunks would need it :) Just kidding. :)

Ok, here is my prediction:

970mp PowerMacs with a PCI Express ATI X1800 video card.
A PowerBook with a 1920 x 1200 display.
An Airport Express, probably pre-n, with video out and an infrared port for accepting signals from a remote control. The remote should allow control of video being sent from the main computer, as well as of pictures in iPhoto.
A wireless iPod capable of sending music, photos, and maybe video clips to the video airport express, and wirelessly to car speakers, as well as wirelessly connect to iTunes on a main computer.

This would allow several combinations according to your needs:

wireless iPod + audio/video Airport Express
main computer iTunes/iPhoto/MovieApplication + audio/video Airport Express
wireless iPod + main computer iTunes/iPhoto

I'm in the market to replace my 17" PowerBook. Boy am I glad I didn't buy a new one last week.

Anyway, here is my 17" Wish List:

HD Display
ATI X800 Mobility GPU
DDR2 memory
100 gig 7200 RPM drive
Much, much, much faster FSB
Bluetooth 2
8x dual-sided burner

And if I am going to get crazy...

6 Hour battery life
1 gig simm standard
Knock 1/2 - 1 lb off the weight
Something "Apple Cool" no one imagined...

But if the I get the top list, that will be fantastic and I will feel ecstatic about the purchase.

Something to think about over the weekend :
From the Feb.1st 2004 Macworld Interview with Steve Jobs on Apple's 20th anniversary
http://www.macworld.com/2004/02/features/themacturns20jobs/index.php

"Well, we've always been very clear on that. We don't think that televisions and personal computers are going to merge. We think basically you watch television to turn your brain off, and you work on your computer when you want to turn your brain on.

Well, they want to link sometimes. Like, when you make a movie, you burn a DVD and you take it to your DVD player. Someday that could happen over AirPort, so you don't have to burn a DVD -- you can just watch it right off your computer on your television set. But most of these products that have said, "Let's combine the television and the computer!” have failed. All of them have failed.

That's funny you say that because the iBook has plenty of power for photoshop - I'm using Photoshop CS on mine and it runs perfectly.

So it's not a "negatif" (surely you mean negative) point. Oh, and typos galore.

Maybe, but all of this hardware is available for Apple to use and it would create a big splash at a press-conference.

G5 portable would make no sense. Here are the facts:

Low-power G5 runs at 1.2 - 1.6GHz. The 1.6Ghz model consumes 16w of power. 7448 G4 consumes under 10w and runs at 1.5 - 2.0Ghz. Also, G5 has 512KB of L2-cache, while 7448 has 1MB of L2-cache. Yes, G5 has faster bus, but the CPU itself is slower than G4 is, clock for clock (BareFeats (IIRC) had a benchmark of 2GHz G4 vs. 2Ghz G5. The two were about as fast, with G5 being usually slightly faster. With faster bus and doubled cache, the G4 would be faster). 7448 has 200Mhz bus and the increased L2-cache helps to reduce the impact of slow bus.

What can we deduct from those facts? G5 PB would not offer ANY benefit over 7448-PB, quite the contrary. It would consume more power and it would be slower. And not only does it not offer any benefits, it would be a lot more difficult to upgrade to. 7448 is pin-compatible with current G4.

I profess ignorence here so can someone answer my question. This does have to do with the thread so dont get tiffy:)

I was burning a DVD with my PowerMac using iDVD and while it was burning I was checking out the Activity Monitor to see how my new Dual 2.3 was doing and I noticed the MediaServer was running so I checked out the threads and saw this :
TrackRecorder
/Applications/iDVD.app/Contents/PlugIns/WirelessVideoOutput.oxygene/Contents/MacOS/WirelessVideoOutput

What does the WirelessVideoOutput mean?

Some other questions about the Ibook 12".
-has it an internal microphone?
-what about the speed? I'm a law student from europe and I have a packard bell easynote d notebook whith is pretty slim and has a lot of speed, but windows sucks. The bettery's life has 2,5 hours (it was 4h).
-I used openoffice on it, an I had a french and german dictionnary, so that when I was writting on it, openoffice wrote long words automaticly when I tipped the 3 first letters. Does something like that exists for the os x?
-I need the ibook for 6-7h a day? what about the autonomy of the battery? I have no possibility to recharge it.
-is my packard better (512 ram, 40gig hd, 15"(it's to big for school, I want a 12" display))
I really want that thing, so I can give the packard bell to my father.
Please help me. I want to become a member of the mac community.

Worry not, I am also a Master law student in Europe and I ONLY use Macs...I know your questions have been answered already, but I wanna add some of my remarks anyway:

1 - Yes, it has an internal mike.

2 - As said before, it has enough speed for all normal activities...heck, I still use an iBook G3 500 with the LATEST OS X on it, and it works beautifully well..! The only weaker areas would be hardcore gaming (like Doom 3 and so on); heavy audio/video processing or other CPU-intensive activities...for Office, Internet, Email and media management, it's more than enough...and the OS X has NONE of the overhead you see in Windows...even faster Pentiums struggle to keep up with it, so in the end the G4 processor has an edge on many of them.

3 - Yep, we have OpenOffice too, as well as NeoOffice and the ubiquitous Microsoft Office (which, after the Service Pack 2, IS indeed pretty good and stable); you can the MS Office Student Version for some 240 francs in Switzerland, pretty cheap I would say.

4 - 6 or 7h is a bit too much...an iBook 12" will live for roughly 5h, which is really good by the way...just don't forget to employ the best battery-saving routines if you can...in normal usage you may expect it to live around 4/5h before recharging...

5 - Forget about PCs, get a Mac and be happy...for a low price you may get an iBook 12" with 40 or 60Gb HD, just don't forget to put as much RAM as possible...OS X alone and its stability are WORTH the price...in addition, practically ZERO viruses and malware so far...turn on the firewall and stealth mode and surf on...

6 - I have switched a couple of friends already, and just bought a Mac Mini for my father (he had an old Pentium with him)...bottomline? There is NO turning back...use a Mac and join the privileged group..! Lycka till!!

17" PB already has an HD display. ;) I get your point though. A WUXGA would be nice.

"8x dual-sided burner." Did you mean dual-layer? Dual-Layer with lightscribe would also be cool to have.

7200rpm drives are cool but they consume more power and tend to be louder than their 5400rpm counterparts.

Why would you want 1gig of "simm" memory instead of DIMM?

Would you like fries with that? :p

The 10-12 media event has fueled much speculation as to what goodies will be updated as well as possible new products. My interest is strong but has moved up several notches with receipt of my nice tax refund. With the holiday season nearing and some Apple surprises awaiting, I find myself in a spending mood. Bring 'em on!

True, but the fact remains that 1280x720 is classed as HD and both the 17" and 15" screens have resolutions that can support video that size.

You also need it to get icons on your 15" screen so small that you can hardly tell what they are. :D

Yeah, if they do put those high-res screens in they're going to need to turn on the resolution independence in 10.4.3 otherwise things are going to be tiny. yeah you can make them bigger but that's not Apple's style, res independence would be the best way to go and that's we expect.

moved powerbooks

At my apple store they have moved the powerbooks to the "photo" section and put the ibooks where the powerbooks used to be; "pro section"... :)

My local Apple Store tends to move Mac's around also. Not sure that it means anything though.
