I've been saying updated PowerBooks since the beginning. looks like they are coming after all :)

Hopefully it's all of the above -- let it be a day of announcing new products from across the board. Or maybe it's just Steve leaking false information to avoid these rumor sites from spoiling the surprise.

Fishes,
narco.

Maybe...

...it's nowt to do with new products and those curtains mean "exit, Stage Left". Prepare for a tearful farewell as someone pockets a multimillion dollar gold watch (that I've contributed almost €3000 toward) and then heads into the sunset for a quiet life on his luxury yacht moored off Rio.

Red curtains normally infer the introduction of something new..

One more thing..

Here's the first Mactel Powerbook..
Wait till you see whats up our sleeve for next year.

Intel Powerbook

I doubt it will happen, but an Intel Powerbook would 0wn the holiday shopping season. I can't think of a single geek out there who wouldn't buy one.

But perhaps Jobs is not only looking to cash in this Christmas, but also looking to spur some more developers into switching to XCode and x86 development.

My guess on all the rumors is Apple taking a card from the US Military's deck. Misinformation. In all likelyhood, he's going to announce speed bumps to the Powerbook and maybe dual core Powermacs, but will end in him saying, "One more thing... I have video iPod and distribution licenses so you can now download TV shows through iTunes." I'll be queued up so I can finally watch The Daily Show whenever I want to.

In any case, "One more thing" doesn't say "Macs" to me.

I think that's how Steve introduced the iMac G5 (as raised out of the floor). It's just kind of 'his thing.'

I bet the G5 iPod will have a G5! Just think about it: they said that getting a G5 in a powerbook would be a huge challenge, nothing about an iPod! Sneaky :p

Would they do it?

Could it possibly be an Intel Powerbook this early? That would warrant a special event.

The personal media market in terms of video players is almost non-existant. So no one is getting ahead of him in this arena. Also, i think most would agree that Steve does what he thinks is best and doesnt listen to others when it comes to this sort of thing. Otherwise OS X would be running on intel boards a long time ago, macs would be all intel already, and video ipods would be on the 2nd or 3rd generation by now.
I would say he does still have the final say, but if he was against something and so many around him were advising otherwise, he certainly might take a gamble on him being wrong for once.

Let us also not forget that the market for mp3 players was almost non-existant when the 1G iPod was released, it even took a few more years after that for it to really explode, so getting in with the video now might be a sensible option. I know many that are already manufacturing such devices, so could steal a hold on that end of the market. Also, as more switch to their phones as mp3 players, apple will need to move into this all round entertainment device anyway, so why not do it now. I can guarantee if they launch it with low expectations and no advertising, the fact that apple have launched it, the name iPod attached to it and the unpaid media interest in the device will be enough for many to stop and wonder why they never thought of buying one before. Sales of video/mp3 players apple or not will soar overnight from an handful to a small niche crowd.

Please let it be an airport express AV. Say for $300. It can remotly stream video from itunes, and has a built in bluetooth (for a mouse and keyboard). Please Please, I want it.

First off, the Nano doesn't have a big margin. So that hurts the credibility of the Think Secret report.

Not a big margin??? Bigger than Apple's other products...

From Business Week: Market research firm iSuppli set out to satisfy the curiosity by buying the $199 2-gigabyte version of the Nano and tearing it apart. The verdict? It costs Apple $90.18 in materials to build the unit and $8 to assemble it, leaving a profit margin before marketing and distribution costs of about 50%. That's consistent with the margins on earlier iPod versions and serves as a reminder of what a profit machine the iPod family of products has become for Apple since it was introduced in 2001.

Margins on the computer-maker's other products tend to be slimmer. An iSuppli teardown of the Mac Mini found the cost of material and manufacturing on that computer to be about $283, leaving a gross margin of 44% before marketing and distribution costs.

I still say they don't hold special media events for simple MHz bumps.

If this is Mac-related, it would be a total redesign of the product (a la iMac G4 to iMac G5).

I find it rather hard to believe that Apple would call a media event to introduce speed bumped Macs, unless Intel versions were ready which is highly unlikely. I have to go with AppleInsider on this one, this is almost certainly going to be an iPod centric event.

Well, many people think Apple is paying too much attention the the iPod... now they want to pay more attention to the Mac...

I admit it would be nice for him to have a working prototype to show off, but he will want to save showing off the actual MacIntels when they are being launched. I am still convinced the designs will change and their will be extra features that are some way off final yet, so a demonstration of what they can do now would be nice. :)

PBs and PMs might be shown off next week but when has Apple gone through the hoops to showcase speed bumped machines. Except for a few content-free MWNYs never. The curtain on the invite isn't just random clip art the designer had on his machine. It does have symbolism. And lets remember, the invite says "one last thing," so I would expect to have the mundane stuff up front and the ground breaking stuff last. That is Steve's M.O.

If Steve drags a lot of writers and reporter to just see new PPC Macs (dual core or otherwise) there is going to be a lot of pissed off writers. Not the best way to get good press. I expect Apple to impress for the holiday season. The show next week is not about pro machines.

I think it would be bad marketing to have a quiet semi-apologetic upgrade to a 970mp PowerMac, since the main focus is on the intel transition. So a big event may help shift the focus to some great PPC stuff yet to come.

Sorry buddy... i just dont see video ipods so soon. "one more thing"? That signals the last upgrade to the powermac and powerbook in my opinion.

Please be true. As much as i would love a video iPod, you can tell how much i love iPods from my sig!

But the PowerBook and PowerMac need some revitalisation. SOOOON!

Thinksecret as usually on the money when they say something too. Hopefully this eventuates and we can all be waiting 3 months for our dual core PM's to arrive

If Oct. 12 is indeed the day, it coincides nicely with the impending release of the 10.4.3 update. I remember reading on MacOSRumors over a month ago that future PMs and PBs would depend on new code being written for 10.4.3, and I also remember speculating on another thread that Paris was a bust because 10.4.3 wasn't ready yet. In the last few days we've started hearing about 10.4.3 being ready in mid-October and new builds being introduced very quickly. In fact, the stealth-bumped Mini is apparently running a modified build of 10.4.2. So everything continues to indicate that the PB and PM update (or just a sucker bump) is linked with the progress of the 10.4.3 update.

you know what's odd? i ordered a dual 2.3 yesterday (10/4) and all i upgraded was up to 1 gb mem, 9650 vid card, wireless options and they said it wouldn't ship until 10/12 or 14! 7- 10 days! sounds like something is coming down the pipeline and they will contact me on the 12th to see if i want to revise my order.

the reason i think this is that when i was ordering i asked the guy "i hear there might be an upgrade soon, will i be able to get a refund if the price drops?".

his reply

"if there is an update between now and then, they'll contact you to see if you want to upgrade your order"

hmmmmm

and 2 days before i placed the order, the ship time for my system was showing 2-4 days, now if you look, for the same components it's 7-10 days.

power macs are def getting an update on 10/12...no doubt!!

You guys, there is NO SOFTWARE for Intel Macs yet!

Besides, product updates dont have this kind of glitz and glamor. This is something new

Take my word for it you guys (wink wink, nudge nudge)

$100 profit per unit isn't big!?!?!?!!? They'll sell millions of them, do that math!

P.S. Here is the link regarding 10.4.3 progress and the modified 10.4.2 on the Mini:

http://www.thinksecret.com/news/0510briefly.html

The secretly-modified Mini is using build 8D40, while the "normal" build of 10.4.2 is 8C46. So clearly some new code has been going into system updates, which suggests that the 10.4.3 update may very likely be accompanied by updated PBs and PMs.
