Apple's history when it comes to speed bumps is just to quietly add the products to the store with a simple press release (a la iMac G5 Rev B, new iBooks).

Please tell me one time they have had a special event to announce a speed bump to a product....

This will be bigger than a speed bump.

They just released the Nano, no WAY IN HELL they release another iPod a month later, NO WAY.

Think Intel cares what's in Apple's computers TODAY? No, Intel just wants Apple to buy it's chips, they don't care that Apple comes out next week with a Power 5, why the hell would they? Have they ever cared before? Why start now that APPLE IS A CLIENT?

Come on, it will NOT be IPOD related. And the PMs and PBs NEED to be updated.

You guys, there is NO SOFTWARE for Intel Macs yet!

Have you heard of Rosetta? You don't need ported software.

All the software on your machine now would run on an Macintel with Rosetta (albeit, slower).

If they offer HD capable screens on the 17 inch new pb and powerbooks that CAN handle the new HD video codec (that my 1.8 g5 cant, so it'd be a nice upgrade!) - the movie theatre symbolism would still be accurate.

The PM's are all duals, so they can handle the codec. Perhaps, a minor bump for them and a major rework for the PB.

Apple is shooting for the Merom and other 2006 dual core processors... the kind that are going to replace the Xeon IIRC. I know Jobs wants efficient processors, but he wants ones they never PUBLICLY ridiculed/speed tested against.

Apple has just been listed as trying to push Intel for an earlier release on these, to make the new systems release during summer 2006 or earlier.

I hope as the rest of you do, that a new design benefiting from the good things PPC has to offer, will arise... say 3.2ghz, just to cover the speeds of the 820-840 series P4 dual cores.

A g5 powerbook would be nice, but they wont have to worry about cooling as much with the Intel chips, so why redesign a laptop twice within a years time?

Going DUAL CORE is FAR from a 'speed bump' as it would require a new mother board IIRC.

In my opinion, they wouldnt call a special gathering JUST to reviel an update on the PowerMac and Powerbook. It has to be something very special above and beyond an update.

Red Curtin + http://www.apple.com/movies + vPod rumors = a new video iPod and probably a few other things to go with it (DVR, Movie Store).

Perhaps the red curtain is finally going to usher in the "Year of HD" with video iPod, HD PB screens, display price breaks, etc. It's starting about 10 months late, but hey, who's counting...

Why would they waste time doing that when it will become Intel in 2006?

The real question is....

How many of you would actually buy the mythical G5 Powerbook if it were released next Wednesday?

If it is a video iPod, I'm buying. I've been waiting to buy a top of the line iPod and if that includes video, that's just an added bonus! :D

I still say they don't hold special media events for simple MHz bumps.

If this is Mac-related, it would be a total redesign of the product (a la iMac G4 to iMac G5).

I agree..
Even though my mind is swirling with speculation Apple HAS to know the media's minds are also swirling with expectations.A speed bump or even Dual Duals doesn't warrant a special red curtain invite only event..

I still say the first Macintel Powerbook along with AirMedia devices just in time for the Christmas season.

Express Remote

Here's one that can tie into the now and the future. For fun, be kind my first post:

The announcement will be an Airport Express with Video Out (adaptor) to tv /w wifi or bluetooth. The one more thing will be a remote control that looks suprisingly like an oversized PDA/Newton.

I agree with those saying that a vPod is not likley because it's going to be a very small niche device. However, if the device is a small screened remote, widescreen 5 to 10 inches, I know that's big, that can connect to your Mac to go through your various iTunes (Music+Video) and iPhoto libraries. This way you don't have to sit at your Mac to change the song, photo to the tv. It'll give everyone a reason to get that flatscreen now.

But here's the kicker, an add on for older modeled iPods, wi-fi or Bluetooth attachment so you can keep your iPod in your pocket or backpack. Enough memory to cache and run the gui on screen.

Other models can have small hd or flash drives, where you can store information, contact, calendar. A high end iPod with very large capacity with no screen+remote can be introduced later. The screen, not the white earbuds will be the sign you have an iPod now.

Eh, just speculation, but if Apple can produce a remote on the cheaps, with Wi-fi and or Bluetooth, there only a few steps away from web/email/pda device. Just dreaming. Oh yeah, priced at $149.99 for remote.

iPod Related. PB, PM are just hopefuls!

Lets see what we have here!

1) VENUE
It's a theatre = movies.
It's also the place where U2 iPod and iPod Photo was launched (HINT HINT)

2) INVITATION BACKGROUND
Definitely theatre curtains = movies

Already there's a link! Remember the "1000 songs in your pocket" with the change pocket jeans? I think it's the same kind of teaser, the kind where only someone who's back from the future can see the direct link =)

3) ONE MORE THING...
I don't think steve said his famous phrase at all when he launched the Nano! Perhaps one more THING may not necessarily be just ONE MORE PRODUCT, but this whole event IS the one more THING. (hope that went across as I intended)

Looking at what we have here, it's obviously something to do with movies, theatre, curtains (??) and ultimately iPods. I think it'll be real neat when he shows off an iPod Photo with, with a revised Firmware which "you can download off our site anytime now" that allows video. (already, some clever 'hacks' can play movies on these iPod Photos! See Podzilla)

Oh, and just One more thing...

Like the way he introduced the Nano, I have a feeling, the Oct 12 may go like this:

1) curtains closed
2) steve comes up on stage, gives some updates, ra-ras the crowd... curtains still closed.
3) he directs attention to the curtains, where they finally open....showing....
4) a video playback screen, showing off some new product (either airport express 2, new PB, new PM, but NOT new iPod)
5) crowd cheers and steve twitches in excitement
6) excitement dies down, video playback goes on...
7) Steve: "Just one more thing....Wonder where that video's coming from?"
8) Audible gasps as steve retrieves the iPod Video from some backstage area...
9) My wallet is emptied instantly.

Yup! My little more than 2¢ worth!

I was going to get a new plasma for my room but if a new PB is released I think I will get one of those instead..because whatever it is it will run circles around my old Ti G4 1Ghz PB.

Give me that 30Mhz bump, HD screen, upgraded graphics card, faster/bigger HD, faster/better DVD drive and etc...

I want something nice and portable and for playing rollercoaster tycoon 3 on and some SW games as well.

I'm sure it will be around $3k but who cares I need something that will last me 4 yrs atleast.

Intel Apps

Besides, product updates dont have this kind of glitz and glamor. This is something new

Take my word for it you guys (wink wink, nudge nudge)

Pshaaaaa. iLife and all of the other standard Apple apps work fine, so it's close enough for the ibook/imac crowd.

Rosetta takes care of most of the rest. For the average user, no problem.

I'd love for an accerlerated Intel rollout, but I don't believe it unless it's a new "appliance" based on Intel technology. Not a mac, but close...

something we're overlooking..

Don't you think it's odd that people have been receiving updated Mac Mini's and yet Apple has not yet made any comments towards it - nor does their website reflect any changes to the line. Perhaps this whole event is for something we already know about and we're all getting worked up for not. Personally I'm hoping a 13" widescreen PB is in the works - but quite frankly if I don't see one next Wednesday, I'm going out on Thursday and picking up a 12" PB and will live happily with the choice. :)

Yep, the curtains are the last hurrah for the PPC PowerMac which also eludes to the "One more thing" statement. "One more thing' meaning one last PPC update to the PowerMac. Makes perfect sense to me. :D

Or does one more thing mean that the new Intel powerbooks are ready right now, 3-9 months earlier than they originally hinted at back at WWDC?

The curtain symbolizes them opening the curtain to reveal the next generation or new era of Apple computers?

THIS ONE IS CONFUSING:

Reasons against video iPod
-Nano released only a few weeks ago
-apparently steve doesn;t want one (potential bs)

Reaosns for video iPod
-Curtains = video store?
-All the chatter about video iPods
-Don;t forget podfuture and his prediction

Reasons for PB and PM
-Were meant to be at Paris Delayed due to OS?
-Need to be updated badly
-Curtains = Last PPC PM and PB 'One last thing'
-Great PPC products still in the pipeline according to steve

Reasons against PM and PB
-Apple don;t seem to update computers anymore
-too much of a big deal (unless airport express 2)

THIS ONE EVEN HAS TS and Appleinsider seperated.

WHAT HOPE DO WE HAVE?

Speak for your own machine. As for my machines, "All"? Hardly. "Most", perhaps. "A lot", probably.

(edit) I think the Pre-N Airport Express would be great. I'd like it to have a pretty front panel & display too.

powerbooks and powermac updates on Tuesday, then on Wednesday on more thing:
Large Cinema Displays?
Airport AV?
Ihome (DVR)/Itunes movie store?

Remember, it's the "year of HD" so we could easily see one of the above.

Video Ipod? I doubt it. Nano just came out. Apple wouldn't do two special events for ipods. i doesn't make sense. They could have it introduce with the Nano with later shipping date.

These event seems to be clearly Video/film relate.

I also believe Steve is not going to introduce the PB and PM a the the event. Why? I think he doesn't want to give to much fanfare to the PPC upgrades. Just think, Intel will be coming soon and Steve doesn't want to say how great the latest PPC products are and then few months later contradict himself and say how amazing the Mac Intel will be. That's why I think on Tuesday we will see speed bumps on the professional line followed by "one more thing" product on Wednesday.

NO vPod, period.

Good point, never thought of it that way.

Personally i dont see the point of a video ipod, a great thing about portable music is you can plug in your phones and forget the player is there, but with video, youd have to stare at the tiny screen to watch it. So, using it on a train etc. would be ctupic coz a)you would get mugged and b)you might miss your stop.

To ALL of you guys dreaming of the vPod, stop dreaming... no later than at the Apple Expo in Paris Steve Jobs talked about a vPod and he was not sure about the usefulness of the idea... maybe AirPort AV but NO vPOD.

In the other hand, on oct 12th, Steve will talk about the 'impossible BIG quarter' Apple just had, first numbers of the nano sells, how well the whole Music thing is going at Apple... then, he will talk about the state of Macintosh, no talk about intel because... one more thing, new ibook (HD screens), PowerBook (HD screens), new PowerMac Dual with same case... (new case design for Intel PowerMacs). This will close the year 2005 product introductions..

For me, if it isn't a quad-powermac or at least a G5 PowerBook I'll be disappointed. I agree that it is unlikely that they would have a special event just for more speed bumps, or perhaps even for the quad-powermac, but I am only interested in new Macs, I have no intention on buying a new iPod no matter what they come out with my 40 G is fine.

The only other thing that I would accept would be P4-M based PowerBook G6s. That would be something that I could get worked up about!

My powerbook 1.67 can't handle HD at all well... its very jumpy with missed frames.

My favorite line in the article on ThinkSecret is the following :

"While full-size iPod sales have been depressed for the better part of the year, especially in capacities beyond 20GB, Apple's bigger priority at this time is halting the skid in both Power Mac and PowerBook sales."

This makes perfect sense to me, and it's what soooo many people have been saying on the forums. People aren't going to wait forever for the PB upgrades, and it doesn't make sense for Apple to make people wait another 9 months before upgrading the PB and PM line. It would be suicide for the professional lines.

I'm definitely hopeful that the powerbooks will be updated on the 12th. What a great belated birthday present (my bday is the 9th). :)

ThinkSecret always seem so confident in recent weeks. Don't you think??

Duh! Forgot the Airport Express Remote. There were hints about this some time ago. Of course, that's what it is. Hopefully it will show what song is playing (and maybe even the cover art?).
