I don't understand the curtains metaphor on the invitation if the event is to announce new PowerPC products.

A video-capable iPod, iTunes Video Store, or a home media box seems more likely to me.

it makes more sense for an unveiling of something new than it does for a video ipod. your thoughts are just too cloudy to see it. ;)

"One more thing" is always reserved for Steve's uber-showman gee-whiz ego-inflating holy crap finale. For the thing we've never seen and never imagined. The world's smallest full-featured notebook. The iPod. The trick up his sleeve that his alchemists have been slaving over for a year. The thing that no one ever did.

No way would Steve use "one more thing" to talk about clock speed boosts, dual-processing, or screen resolution increases. Even large ones. Especially not if he's titling an entire announcement with the catch phrase that introduced the iPod.

Whatever it is, I guarantee that a) no one here or anywhere else would have fathomed his exact strategy, and b) we will all kick ourselves afterwards because of how stupid-obvious the whole thing should have been.

Think different my friends.

Here's one that can tie into the now and the future. For fun, be kind my first post:

The announcement will be an Airport Express with Video Out (adaptor) to tv /w wifi or bluetooth. The one more thing will be a remote control that looks suprisingly like an oversized PDA/Newton.

I agree with those saying that a vPod is not likley because it's going to be a very small niche device. However, if the device is a small screened remote, widescreen 5 to 10 inches, I know that's big, that can connect to your Mac to go through your various iTunes (Music+Video) and iPhoto libraries. This way you don't have to sit at your Mac to change the song, photo to the tv. It'll give everyone a reason to get that flatscreen now.

Okay, now you have me thinking. I still think the iPod will do video, and be able to transmit wirelessly.

But another thing they can do is add remote control functionality since it's now wireless. Why build a separate device when you can build it into your iPod? Of course, if the iPod is wireless then you can just play music and videos off your iPod. But there's no reason it can't have additional wireless functionalities.

The wireless thing really creates so many possibilities for linkage between iPod/AE/Mac. Too bad they need a superhuman battery for it. But I guess that's what a dock is for...They would almost have to add a stripped down dock that charged the iPod, to make wireless streaming realistic. But I'm pretty convinced that video or not, WIRELESS will be the next big revolution for the iPod. Adding video is significant, but it's an evolution more than anything else.

Alright, I'm increasingly thinking the MAIN announcement will be NEITHER Macs NOR iPods.

New iPods and new Macs may well be coming too, even at the same time, but the BIG "One More Thing" red-curtains announcement sounds like something different.

The change-pocket image on the last invitation was far from a careless choice. Now, red curtains can mean one of three things:

1. Movies. But a video-enabled iPod or a video download service would make more sense (initially) for smaller files: music videos, not movies.

2. Punch and Judy. No real evidence yet, but some kind of cross-promotion could be big.

3. Home theater. Some new, non-iPod product(s). The iPod division has long been expected to release non-iPod devices, I seem to recall. Maybe "video AirTunes" with video library management in iTunes. No download service even needed, really--people have DVDs already.

#3 sounds like a good possibility. Of course, I'd settle for an ultraslim 11" widescreen Yonah PowerBook :)

I've waited all year for a new powerbook. I really hope [powerbook] that this upcoming [powerbook] event will feature decent [powerbook] upgrades to the Powerbook lines [powerbook].

I have the cash ready to immediately [powerbook] PURCHASE one of these revamped powerbooks [powerbook]. So please Steve [powerbook] don't disappoint the faithful [powerbook].

I just can't see it. Why would Apple offer new Macs at this event? The only new Macs that will deserve serious fanfare are the Intel ones, and I find it difficult to believe that Apple are going to release the first Intel ones now… it's just too soon - only the early adopters are going to rush to get a new Mac that won't run 95%+ of their new software natively. As much as we might like it, a PowerPC upgrade is too much of a snoozefest for most people to care, so why there would be a special event I can't work out.

Put me down in the "I'll believe it when I see it, and not before" column.

Didn't some site find video buttons in the new Itunes? You'd think that has to be used for something doesn't it? I would say a video store would be big enough for an event like this.

PM Intel 2007

Why would they waste time doing that when it will become Intel in 2006?

SJ said that PM will become intel in 2007 only. They will be the last one, so 2 more years till there it's a very very long time to wait for a big update.

I was thinking along the same lines. Maybe iPuppets to replace iPod socks to deal with the nano scratches?

OT: I keep telling my 4 year old that a large percentage of his "Why?" questions can be attributed to two powerful forces in the universe: Gravity, and cross-marketing.

I have to stick with podfuture on this one. He was right about the nano, almost completely, has been predicting video-capable iPods for awhile, and is sticking by his story. A thought: the general, non-apple public is completely jazzed about iPods. Why not entice the press with the hint or the promise of a new iPod, something to grab attention, then not only provide an iPod, but some sort of razzle dazzle update to the computers? Wasn't Phil Schiller just saying how they want to draw more attention to Macs? Honestly, I have no idea - any sort of update or introduction would be pleasant - but considering the circumstances, the hints, the speculation, and now the divergent reports, that's what I think to be most likely.

Aint going to happen. Powermacs and Powerbooks should be reserved for WWDC

You really think that Powermacs and Powerbooks should only be updated once a year?

I don't get that at all. I don't think most of the other people here would agree with your sentiments either. If anything, people want more frequent updates to the product lines rather than less frequent ones.

If I had to choice, I would say something along the lines of iPod. The computing units for apple are usually released around school dates when semesters begin. Though updates usually come in october and mid semester after they've sold off backstock.

I must say, you are very wise ;)

Why wait I will sell mine now...

Don't you think it's odd that people have been receiving updated Mac Mini's and yet Apple has not yet made any comments towards it - nor does their website reflect any changes to the line. Perhaps this whole event is for something we already know about and we're all getting worked up for not. Personally I'm hoping a 13" widescreen PB is in the works - but quite frankly if I don't see one next Wednesday, I'm going out on Thursday and picking up a 12" PB and will live happily with the choice. :)

I just bought mine and I will sell it to whomever wants to live with a 12" PB... e-mail me at pastordean@mac.com. I will sell it for $1600 shipped.

The Godfather at Intel Corp. will not be pleased if Apple introduces new PPC Macs...

What are you talking about? Why would they care -- Jobs has already announced that PPC devices were still in the pipeline?

In reference to no software being available for the Intel Mac.
Jobs already said OSX and the iLife suite has been naitively ported to Intel.
This means iLife and perhaps even Pages and Keynote.
As for developers trying to port to X86 they are under the NDA so people wouldn't really know if 3rd party software is or isn't ready now.

I was peeking at think secrets discussion.Which btw cant hold a candle to the number of people on this board right now..
One person supposedly in the know said to think the color orange..
Take that with a grain of confussion but comparing Apples to Oranges suggests Apple and X86...

I would like to think that it's new PM's, simply because I've been waiting for so long. iPods? Mini's? Bah! They don't do a thing to help me make a living: faster Macs will. A new, faster Mac would help me make the money for toys like iPods if I wanted one.
It's time for new tools, not more toys. Gimmie a new quad!
