Will Apple be releasing a retinal scanner display?

steve_hill4 said:
Either that or it was a reference to the new tangerine PowerBooks.

Hmmmmm. If you say that an insider says it has something to do with orange, and Cringely wrote about the iTunes Movie Store back in July and mentioned a product offered by Orange SA, and that product is "Big Screen Video Eyewear," [ http://www.gizmag.co.uk/go/4252/ ] does that mean Apple will be introducing a retinal scanner display to show movies?

Just trying to put some pieces together.

Interesting that Appleinsider is completely down now. It has been breaking down in stages, yesterday the forums stopped working, earlier today only the main page was still on and not the individual articles. Now everything is down.

I have no problems getting to AppleInsider

Powerbook prices

Hi,

I'm planning to buy my first Mac powerbook, well my first Mac actually, to fall into step with my work-place. I am holding off to see how these rumours pan-out next week. Can anyone hint at what will happen to Powerbook prices should they be upgraded? Up, down...? And if they go up beyond my limit, will the old version of the Powerbooks still be available for a while (from the regular resellers or Apple itself)? Based on your experience with previous upgrades to Apple products, what can we expect? I know there are probably many unknown variables here...but thanks.

Haha, I wish.

If you don't believe me, (which i'm sure you all do), go to pinkfloydonline.com's message board and check out my profile. I am a moderator on that board and I doubt Steve Jobs would have the time.

ooo i knew you'd say that ;) a clever disguise Jobs. clever indeed.

EVERYBODY IS WRONG!!!!!!

I have confirmed 100% that the "one more thing" is in specific reference to an update to the eMac.

:p
Gawd, I hope not. What a major bummer that would be! But really, if there's anything going to happen to the eMac, it will be that it gets terminated. Not what I hope (since Apple needs it's price point to be somewhat competitive with all those cheap-a*s PCs), but could happen. But then again, this whole event will have nothing to do with the eMac.

My vote is for the vPod. PowerBooks and Power Macs getting updated would be awesome, especially if the former's update includes a G5 processor. Whoa, what a major surprise that would be, won't it now? Dual dual core G5 Power Mac would rock big time, too.

But, a completely redesigned flag ship iPod with video playback capability is my guess. Right now, it's also Apple's cash hit, so they need to take the iPod everywhere they can in order to sell, sell, sell. Although a G5 PowerBook would also sell like hell...

Oh well, we'll see. Nothing to see here. Move along.

He IS Jobs!!

Thats it!

the curtain opens and Pink Floyd do a set then Apple announces Floyd's tour can be downloaded via the iTunes video store..

it's all coming together..

This just screams conspiracy. Apple leaks two seemingly conflicting reports to major rumors sites and the rumor world goes into anarchy guessing which one is right all the while missing the big picture: they're both right! A new device combining the aesthetics and ease-of-use of the iPod with the power and functionality of the PowerBook/Mac.

Mwa-ha-ha! *shifty eyes*

Yes, Powerbook updates will be announced with an expected shipping date of april 2006.

Darn it, just as I switch over from Orange to O2 for my main account. Oh well, perhaps by the time we get these in the stores, I can comfort myself with a brand new PowerBook.

New models tend to be priced around the same as the old--just better specs for your money. Sometimes there is some overall price drop (overall, computers are getting cheaper, Macs included). It can be hard to compare if the models don't break down the same, but no overall increase would be expected.

Meanwhile, remaining stock of old models will drop in price. So even if you want the old model, some "wait and see" may be in order. If you don't need the machine right now, waiting is smart.

Apple is planning for the current Dothan

Apple is shooting for the Merom and other 2006 dual core processors... the kind that are going to replace the Xeon IIRC. I know Jobs wants efficient processors, but he wants ones they never PUBLICLY ridiculed/speed tested against.
Apple is telling developers to write code for Dothan - the current single CPU 32-bit Pentium M. They aren't telling them to write for next year's Merom, or even Yonah in December.

There's no technical reason that Apple couldn't introduce a Dothan-based system next week - the CPU and chipsets are all available in quantity.

There may be reasons that they wouldn't, but it's not because Apple is planning on using chips that aren't yet available....

Hmmm - a MacIntel Mini home media system....

How many of you would actually buy the mythical G5 Powerbook if it were released next Wednesday?
Or a slightly different question: How many of you (us) don't think that we're ever going to see a PowerBook G5? I'm more inclined to think that at this point, the next big change for the PowerBook line will be the switch to Intel processors. I don't really expect to see a PowerPC G5-based PowerBook anymore.

Someone please explain why a dual dualcore G5 wouldn't be news? It seems like a huge step forward for the powermac, the biggest update since June 2003.

I know the Intels are coming, but we're talking 2007 for the powermac line, not to mention the 'transition' period for major pro apps that will probably be buggy at first.

Apple needs at least one more cutting edge powerpc machine before the move to Intel.. not just another speed bump, but a major revision like dualcore.

1 more thing rather implies

that there must be other things to which that 1 is an addition. Therefore I reckon that they will reveal new dual core powermacs, a set top box with movie download, a video ipod, and the 'one more thing' will be some kind of ray gun or maybe a spaceship or something like that.

I dont think a PowerBook G5 will come. I just cant see that right before a major switch to intel apple would have spent the time and money in R&D for A G5 PB and then go straight to and then start all over again with a intel PB.

Hands up for the G5 PowerBook, but it would have to be something a bit more special than just replacign a G4 in there with a G5. Perhaps dual dual 3.0 G5, Pre-N airport, blu-ray, 200GB HDD, 1GB memory, brighter HD screens, 512MB graphics....

Perhaps I should have aimed a little bit lower, but wouldn't this be a nice farewell to PPC.

The launch event is planned for October 12 in San Jose, California, and is being relayed around the world live. In Britain, Apple has hired facilities at BBC Television Centre.

Just quickly skimming that article and it says the click wheel will be on the side, (right hand side in landscape), very much like the faked picture. While I can see this, I still think it will only be on the side wehn you are in "Landscape Mode" and like the Sony HD5 you will be able to rotate through 270º, for left-handed, right-handed and portrait modes. Music could be either, video in landscape and obviously you select which handed view you take.

Apple have always catered to left handed users and I don't see why they would stop now by sticking the wheel on the right. I am still more inclined to believe default will be portrait.
