YOU CRAZY FOOLS WHO COMPLAIN ABOUT MATTE SCREENS!!!!!
For your information you "CAN NOT" make a glass screen matte...
that was only for those ugly old plastic type lcds, and besides you can see these new LED screens in the sun just fine. Matte screens are dead. And the firewire, come on now, usb is the same bloody speed as firewire if not faster, just switch to usb and stop complaining like little children that are stuck in a rut... GET OVER IT!!!, everything I can think of is usb, and if USB3.0 ever comes out then say goodbye firewire, also firewire uses more power than usb so your battery life would be decreased...
sorry about this but i had to get it out...

You do have some good points...But, what if you already own a number of firewire peripherals? ( i.e. camera, disks, etc. ). The thing is, Apple knows their customers will just use it as an excuse to buy all new stuff ( cameras, disks, etc. ) anyway. I mean, if you've got $3k to buy a new laptop, you've got to have more, right? :)

All joking aside, there is probably some USB<->FW or ethernet<->FW adapters somewhere, right?

The books are ok but I do not get why so much noise about the enclosure specially when I care less.

Firewire 800 is faster than USB 2.0. A lot faster. All professionals would use Firewire 800 for video editing if on the road with Laptop. Don't need to add links to back up claim, just type in google: usb 2.0 vs firewire 800 would do the trick. Yes, USB 3 will come out... A new firewire is coming too. You know DROBO? The data storage robot, they have discontinued line of USB and ramped up production of Firewire... Guess it shows you where market is.

Sorry about this, but I have to get it out too: You need to research before these type of comments.

it was hilarious seeing Steve telling up the people to hurry up, then seeing a shot of a guy looking at every angle, edge, etc.

It almost seemed as if he was in a trance, not hearing a word steve said. :D

How come I can't watch the key note from the Apple site? When I click on the link to watch it always comes up and says disconnected. Nothing ever plays.

This happened with the iPod links when that key note was on the Apple site as well.

What am I not doing or doing wrong?

Is it just me, or did Steve seem seriously pissed when the back row seemingly took a long time to admire the unibody construction? What's funny is the audience was chuckling, but Steve seemed deftly serious when he told them to hurry along.

Also, I've never seen a keynote just end so abruptly with a video. At just about an hour long, Steve just seemed pissed and wanted to rush through the keynote as quickly as possible.

USB has never been faster than FireWire in any incarnation. FireWire 400 was faster than USB, FireWire 800 is faster than USB 2, and FireWire 3200 is theoretically faster than USB 3. Another advantage of FireWire is its steady rate of data transfer, as opposed to USB's burst method of data transfer. Thus, USB may very briefly transfer data faster, but it will never maintain such a speed.

and firewire will never be as cheap since it requires an interface cheap in both devices while USB does not (USB3 will come with that option so USB3 vs firewire 3200 should be fair)

personally i wouldn't have cared about them dropping the FW port if they put an additional USB port on it ... 2 is simply not enough

I wonder whose idea the "Show and Tell" was… I doubt it will be repeated. Jobs is not a patient man. :D

I have a feeling there was some "unfinished" business… literally. Perhaps to do with the 17" as it is notable by its absence.
As Apple events go it was very low-key.

I also suspect in an effort to counter the image of Apple as a one-man show Jobs brought on Tim Cook, Jony (WTF?) Ive and Phil Schiller to spread the word. With varying degrees of success.

I'm a little baffled by the updates but I think this is very much a transitional stage. I am slightly suprised with the lack of firewire/usb ports on the pro models and the price of the base model macbook. I thought this might be an oppurtunity for apple to really hit the student market with some real cheap notebooks.

The display also seems a little perplexing. You might aswell just buy an iMac!

But they're all still great products and no doubt will sell like hotcakes, we all love apple otherwise we wouldn't be on these forums now would we...

oh, and it's ALUMINIUM, not ALOOMINUM

In the US the new base MB is $1,299.00

Going by current exchange rates that = £750

Yet its in the Apple store for £950  I know the UK is usually more expensive by £50-100 but not £200!!!!

*thump**thump**thump* - for the sake of my skull and the ever-increasing dent in my desk please tell me you're kidding.

The US price is WITHOUT TAX! You need to compare to the ex VAT price on the apple UK site which is £807.66. So a whole £57.66 difference some of which will be swallowed up by import duty and additional shipping costs within the EU. Come on people, if you're going to bitch at least try and work out your maths properly first.

Actually, I can't help but notice this is kind of typical of an Apple launch these days - new products come out and a biblical flood of whiners come out of the woodwork who can't possibly have had a chance to check out the products for themselves. The screens are a good case in point here, so many complaints and yet we currently have no idea how well they'll do in various lighting conditions. Might be they are indeed as bad as people think but right now it's all pointless speculation. I'm seriously starting to think we'd all be better off if no rumours spread before a product launch so people don't get their hopes up for ridiculous tech leaps that have no chance of becoming reality for any number of reasons.

By all means, go ahead and complain, but would it kill you to wait and try the object of your derision or for reviews to come along before jumping to conclusions.

You can get the high quality (and longer) version trhough iTunes, just search for Apple Keynotes on ITMS

Anyone notice how much skinnier Jobs looks?!!
Idk about anyone, but I'm actually kind of worried....

The new MBP style is a joke! They are cheap looking than ever before yet costs the same as before. :(

Now that their share in computer sales has reached close to 10%, they are definitely trying to reduce the cost on each laptop by making some accessories optional, such as Apple remote, and by using the new manufacturing process (unibody).

Talking about the world economic unstability...

Why can't the guy pronounce ALUMINUM right?
He does pronounce "aluminium" right. Americans spell and pronounce it wrong.

funny how the vp of marketing was wearing a blackberry and not an iphone. What does that say when even their own people uses, the competition?
It's NOT A BLACKBERRY, It's a wireless microphone transmitter.

As for the battering indicator? what is wrong with the on-screen display?
You mean for when the computer is off and you want to check the charge level without booting it up and pulling it out of your backpack? That's what's wrong with the on-screen display.

Also, having magsafe and all is cool, but what would posses apple to design the new connector and roll out a screen with that abomination of 3 connectors? I'm surprised they didn't find a way to route power and usb through the display connector as well.
"abomination"? Power, USB, display. I love it. It's effectively a universal docking station for all their new products. They didn't 'find a way' to modify the DisplayPort because they didn't design the DisplayPort.... it's an INDUSTRY STANDARD that will appear on lots of new products from different manufacturers.

So, with the new mini displayport that apple invented, they control what you can use it for.. and now only for dvi, not a real full size displayport or hdmi adapter exists for mini displayport.. But everyone is happy anyways, right.........
What are you babbling about? They didn't design the DisplayPort.... it's an INDUSTRY STANDARD that will appear on lots of new products from different manufacturers.

I don't hold out much hope for apples mini display port 'technology' either.
They didn't design the DisplayPort.... it's an INDUSTRY STANDARD that will appear on lots of new products from different manufacturers. Are we clear on this yet?

I did not know I needed a laptop carved out of aluminum - what a waste - give me the old case w/2 firewire ports and some saving. Frickin solid aluminum - at what cost?

Form follows function - WTF apple?

:mad: Waste, how? Did you not pay attention to the video? It saves costs, labour, parts, complexity because it SIMPLIFIES the manufacturing & assembly process while reducing weight and adding strength. Win, Win, Win. Form does indeed follow function. You just don't seem to understand what that saying means.

DisplayPort isn't Mini-DisplayPort

you kinda kinda DVI isn't Mini-DVI (and who seriously used that outside of apple who invented it ?)

(that's why this new screen is so ridiculous .. it doesn't even have a normal Displayportcable which makes it useless with a non apple computer)

personally i think the difference between DisplayPort and mini-displayport is so smallthat it should be worh the extra hassle of a proprietary standard ... but apple wants to sell adapters ... i guess

Wow... Its so nice when you start criticize something you clearly know nothing about. Pro audio and video users need FW. End of story. Regarding matte screens if you want to know what the image really looks like then you want it. If you just want to look at pretty pictures then glossy is fine. I hope you realize that different users have different needs and thats a fact.

Great points.

But since you registered here just to vent (this being your first post), I suggest you send feedback to Apple were they will actually see your post.

I would be frustrated too, however venting here will do little to get you what you want from Apple itself. ;)

image.php

I know... you're right. I will definitely voice my concerns to Apple. I was pretty frustrated yesterday and as you accurately pointed out... I was venting.

ok, now go to the refurb site and buy your returned model for 40% cheaper.

I was considering that... but I was really hoping for the GPU update on the 17" model. While I'm sure it will come at some point, I don't understand why they would make the 15" stronger than the 17".

It's a sad day when HP is more innovative that Apple (referring to the HP touchsmart).
