Blah. I don't like it, but it's growing on me. I'll save for the Pro model because I have expensive tastes (15"). But I'm NOT crazy to spend the extra coin for the better processor and bigger hard drive. I can't justify to myself spending the few extra hundred for it. Plus tax, I'm looking closer to $3000 (Canadian) that way.

I don't know... I was disappointed in the keynote. I like the recyclability, I like multitouch. No button track pad? As someone asked on page 2, how do you highlight text to copy/cut and paste? firewire - I know it is a sticking point for a lot of you, but 90% of what I buy is USB - I have not used firewire in 4 yrs.

Lack of Blu-ray, oh I know some are crying about that.....

Maybe once I go to the apple store and see one and play with one, I may think differently... should be interesting as the store in Durham is very bright, wonder how bad the glare on the glossy will be. But for right now, given the price.... not really interested. It's a shame because the may actually be a sturdy product.

Atleast it finally does appear that they killed to combo drive.....

Education discount pricing...

I see Apple "quietly" changed the Apple Education discount pricing. Instead of getting $200 off of the Macbook Pro, you only get $100 off. And the Macbook you only get $49.00 off. Pretty slimy in my opinion.

I guess I am in the minority here, but I like the new mbp and I have already placed the order to receive one next week.

im with ya! i like the new mbp design and going to get one asap. im a little dissapointed on the super glossy screen. its like a half mirror half screen. hopefully there are some good anti-glare screens you can put on them.

Anyone know when the NEW macbooks/pros will be arriving to apple stores?

For what it's worth here's my thoughts on the new notebooks and the "show".

"PROs":p
I like how apple is making the cases for their notebooks.
No Waste ?? (shouldn't that make them cheaper though)
Switchable HD ... SSHD
Touch Pad
"Cons"
Black Bezel needs to go. (I'm okay with the keyboard and keys.)
I have never owned a matte finish but imagine that it would be nice.

"overall"
I'm okay with paying high prices for good products but I don't like to throw my money away. I'll probably get one when I can pick up a refub. I think apple is in the middle of something big. It's a transition or something.

Note: Apple employees should have iphones. duuh and the mouse button is below was below the touch pad on the old notebooks Steve! Just incase you can't find it again. :p

does anyone know when they'll ship? I bought it today and got overnight shipping.. Steve said they would be shipping today but haven't gotten any notification

how do you highlight text to copy/cut and paste?
The same way you do on the old notebooks. Find the text, click down on the button (or trackpad) then move your finger to highlight.

Anyways.... Gosh I love the update. Everything is awesome. It looks cool, it's stronger, aluminum!, new trackpad... yes... I really wanna go to the Apple store now. hahaha

Man, this guy is so damn annoying to listen to, he has some sort of breathing tic when he pauses and gets ready to speak.

And why in the hell can't the guy pronounce ALUMINUM right?
He's not pronouncing it wrong, that's just the British accent. Hahaha... A-loom-in-ee-uhm

This is nonsense - why is everybody unhappy? These machines look great and will work great!

Great things are coming out of apple. My only complaint - it seems to me they reduced the edu discount? - In which case I'm glad I got my new 24' imac a couple of weeks ago....

That was one of the most uninspiring keynotes I have ever seen. I nearly fell asleep 5 times throughout. Apple has really lost its flare for the dramatic and despite its recent success, I see it's reputation starting to decline thanks to it's questionable decision making and lackluster presentations.

I think this was an odd design choice. I agree with many posts I have seen here and on AI that the black bezel makes it look like a PC. When it is closed, it looks a lot like the cheapo aluminum/silvery metal crap that Compaq sells at $400.00. Why make the entire line look the same? I love that the MBP's looked badass compared to the rest of the line. One of the reasons I dropped more cheddar on it. It was that much sexier. I couldn't be happier with my Penryn MBP (replaced by BestBuy in March when my Santa Rosa MBP's keyboard and mousepad died at exactly the same time (purchased in November)). Glass trackpad has me concerned. I am not exactly rough with my MBP, it is in a triple protection Oakley SI laptop bag (if you watch Dexter Season 1 and 2 you have seen that bag, it's rather serious), but every now and then, I drop my back accidentally or let it hit the floor a little too hard, regretting not paying more attention immediately. While, *knock on wood, no damage has occurred, what if there were glass on this thing? Cool concept, but is it necessary for a portable device. I am already concerned I will crack my iPhone 3G, now there is something else to treat almost as delicately as my 8 month old daughter. The look does not seem so revolutionary. I wanted something to take my breath away. I still love taking out my MBP. It is what the future should look like. Plastic black bezel? Really?

Also, does anyone know if they hard drive protection when you drop it is still there and if the ambient light sensor is still there? Nice little features on the MBP should remain in the new form factor I would imagine. Disappointing about the firewire port in the lesser MacBook, but I have to admit, not many I know use it other than me. I would think that if you are serious enough about firewire, you would be getting the MBP.

If Apple wanted to really grab hold of the market share, they need to come up big with the discounts and come up with an entry level MacBook for everyone else on the brink of buying Apple. You would think that recent market crisis would have them coming up with a better solution than simply new, moderately redesigned (definitely more redesigned than recent refreshes of the MBP line), more expensive computers. No matte finish, lesser ports for some, greater hard drive space and video GPU, no motion detection and ambient light sensor. This seems so empty. I wanted to buy the new one (although mine is not that old) so I could get my wife into the mac and have the new one to myself. I am just not inspired to do so. Although the plastic iPhones feel cheap and are not as sex as the original iPhone, I understand the need to get the metal out of the way to allow greater (hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha) reception. I don't get what they did here that honors current owners and entices those undecided about Apple.

I have a very basic rule when it comes to electronic purchases.
What Would Batman Do?
I refused to buy an ipod until it came in black. No way would I have had a mac until they made one in black.
Got my iPhone when the black one came out.
Silver, White, etc. does not look pro. Black is pro. Black is batman. At the end of the day, Batman wins.

PS.
With my blackbook, my firewire audio interface, and my firewire DV cam, I am a mobile webcasting broadcast rig. A youstream powerhouse. Leaving it out was a BIG mistake. Also can't figure out why macbooks don't have expansion slots, and every low end PC i've owned in the last 8 years has.. same with SD slots.. WTF :apple:

YOU CRAZY FOOLS WHO COMPLAIN ABOUT MATTE SCREENS!!!!!
For your information you "CAN NOT" make a glass screen matte...
that was only for those ugly old plastic type lcds, and besides you can see these new LED screens in the sun just fine. Matte screens are dead. And the firewire, come on now, usb is the same bloody speed as firewire if not faster, just switch to usb and stop complaining like little children that are stuck in a rut... GET OVER IT!!!, everything I can think of is usb, and if USB3.0 ever comes out then say goodbye firewire, also firewire uses more power than usb so your battery life would be decreased...
sorry about this but i had to get it out...

Thank you, Apple, for giving us an older Sony Vaio at a higher price. :) Bonus for no firewire unless you're willing to pony up the money for a Pro model. Good stuff all around, Apple.

Not bad points at all. I think one of additional reasons for cheaper plastic iPhones in black and white was so that those that owned the MacBooks in those colors could match since the first iPhone matched the MBP. Ever think about customizing the apple logo on the back of the screen to a yellow glowing bat symbol? That would be the shizknight.

In the US the new base MB is $1,299.00

Going by current exchange rates that = £750

Yet its in the Apple store for £950  I know the UK is usually more expensive by £50-100 but not £200!!!!

Don't forget to include 17% VAT taxe. Which is included in the apple prices.

my internet has not been working well so i could watch it off quicktime so i downloaded it off the podcast it was great.
The new macbook pro, new mac book, macbook air update and new Cinema display AMAZING GOOD JOB :apple:

Why can't the guy pronounce ALUMINUM right?

Because the standard international name is ALUMINIUM according to IUPAC (International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry). The American spelling of ALUMINUM is however recognized as an acceptable alternative. ;)

I'm a college student so I don't really have much money as you can imagine. So the $1099 Macbook was at the top of my budget and looking good. Then I got excited about the updates and waited. Now its $1299 for the new model low end...wtf. And to top it off the student discount is only $50!! Is that even a discount??
