That myth has been perpetuated for decades. Yes, you "can" "upgrade" a PC. Problem is, once you choose the high-end graphics card you need, you find that it is only compatible with motherboard X, which only works with RAM at the latest speeds, etc. etc. I used PCs and Macs simultaneously for years, and NEVER upgraded a PC. By the time you need to upgrade the CPU or motherboard or hard drive or RAM, etc, it's time for a whole new machine.

You upgrade a PC by replacing it with a Mac. That's easy.

The hilarious thing is that this thing should be designed with an iPhone/iPad as a minimum specification not some high end PC that no one in a retail environment owns.
Agreed. And not even a new iPhone - an iPhone 3Gs. No wait - an iPod video. Yeah - they should do that. OS 9 support should be included too. And they should sell it for $50. And include a free puppy.

I'd rather spend $6000 dollars creating content than $1500 consuming it. It also puts it into the same neighborhood as other expensive game systems that failed. Anyone remember 3DO, Phillips CDI and Neo Geo? Have fun in VR land, basement dwellers!

The current Mac Pro overheats horribly, especially the 12-core version. The thermal core design works ok to a degree. The original tower design was better.

Hopefully this gets Apple's attention (though doubt it will). The current Mac Pro is over two years old and no sign of an upgrade in sight.

Your sarcasm isn't subtle enough to invoke even the slightest laughter. You made the common mistake of hugely exaggerating the components of your attempted joke, and taking it way too far. Too primitive and unrefined, but keep trying - you'll crack it one day :)

Abso-abso-LUTELY! :)

Who wants to wander around pretend "wurldz" shooting things? I've got a creative, inquisitive mind, not a destructive, passive one. PAYING to have some game corporation suck your life away from you as you fester in your chair? Erm, no thanks.

He's absolutely right...

Reading through Barefeats benchmarks, you'll find that a 980ti popped into a SIX year old Mac Pro torches the latest and greatest Mac's for anything gaming related.

Sucks...

It sure does (self-satisfied smile after glancing down at the big silver box next to my desk).

i had 3DO lol. same stuff different year the nerds will tell ya otherwise of course. they also swim in women too. or guys if that's your thing.

.

Let's not forget than the PC industry is rapidly shrinking while Apple's line of Macs and iMacs is actually thriving. It makes zero sense for Apple to muddy its product line and engineering focus to serve this niche market.

This is hilarious. "Rapidly" shrinking? What reports are you looking at. Marketshare has declined but (forget profits) PCs are blowing the pants off Apple in terms of # of units. It's not even close. And they aren't rapidly declining. They are just declining. I suspect that that is (in part) due to the fact that some people are realizing that for surfing the net as many do - they don't need to keep upgrading/buying a new system every year or even 2-3 or more years.

Also, it's already been reported that Apple is working on something in the VR space. So I guess it makes sense to them.

That's the 21 inch iMac, which relies on integrated graphics. The 27 inch imacs have better graphics chipsets.

Still not good enough to run Oculus Rift, but what laptop chipset can?
Yes even the better gpus are just laptop gpus stuck into Demerol chassis.

I’m not a tech expert or hardcore gamer so I could be wrong but these are my feelings about this.

Macs are currently indeed the bottleneck for this tech.
But there is a more important hurdle.

Mac game development and it’s marketshare.

Even if Apple produced a excellent gaming machine it wouldn’t get the attention of developers as they would have to invest time and money in another platform and recode for it. And if there was an established Apple gaming platform in MacBook Pro, iMac, Mac Pro it would still be considerably smaller than the PC Windows gaming community.

From Apple’s side there is just no passion for it. Maybe Halo was too bad a burn for them, but they could have carried on. Gaming does push tech forward. The video on youtube of GTA5 played via OR was freakily realistic.

I don’t know if i’m the target audience for OR though.

I used to play games when I started of in computing on the Amiga 1200, then it was Megadrive/Snes and my last console was the Dreamcast. No game before or since has engaged me as Soul Caliber on DC. There was no lag between what I wanted to do and the action on screen. I was totally immersed. Perhaps I am the target audience, if it’s done right. Just not yet.

Maybe I’m getting too old for gaming now but what would interest me is the other possibilities like science.

Imagine looking at a APOD or NASA site and seeing a post on a newly mapped area of Mars and a link to view it in VR. You could actually (ok, virtually) be standing on Mars!

Also I would like to play The Room 4 in VR, that would be awesome.

I just hope that VR doesn’t become swamped by just FPS, though it does lend itself to that finely, and creative games / gameplay and experiences flourish.

Apple have said they are “very interested” in VR, so they must have something in their labs they are working on right now.

Macs aren’t ready for VR, yet. And that’s ok.

Apple didn’t create the first MP3 player either. Just the best, and greatest selling one.

We’ll see.

or be so ignorant and ruin the very thing that once was good. season pass, the whole lot of gamerzzzzzz allowed that BS in. they can't go without it, they simply can't. i used to say better than heroine, but maybe shooting drugs would be better for their minds. or these slight differences in lighting tech year to year, that i have to squint to see. yes in person, with good vision. they love imaginary places, probably imaginary wives or gf's too.

If you want VR now, go buy a Google Cardboard and strap your iPhone to your face; whilst you're distracted, I'll take your poor Mac and give it a better life :D

There's a big difference between Gear VR and Oculus Rift. If you don't know that - then you should excuse yourself from the conversation.

I have the Gear VR - it's an amazing piece of tech. But on the spectrum, it's well above cardboard - but not even close to the Rift.

Firstly it's a bit rude to tell me I have no place here for an opinion. Secondly where have I mentioned Gear VR. I was mearly saying that the Rift should not require computers to be compatible with niche hardware and instead should be optimised for the average computer. Their language made out that Apple computers are rubbish which is just utter crap.

Well that's strange. You mean I can play all of these great 3D games on my old, useless Mac Pro but I can't do VR? Well forget your stupid product, then, because it's totally useless.

During a recent Xbox press event, ShackNews had an opportunity to speak with Oculus VR founder Palmer Luckey and asked him whether the company plans to implement Mac support for the Oculus Rift virtual reality headset.

In response to the question, Luckey said Oculus Rift support for the Mac was "up to Apple," and that the company needed to "prioritize higher-end GPUs." If Apple builds a machine that can handle the hardware, Oculus VR would "love to support Mac."

The Oculus Rift, which is available for pre-order, will begin shipping out later this month to PC users. While Mac support was planned early on, work on a Mac version was halted once it became clear Mac machines would not have the graphics capabilities to power the headset.

As Luckey mentions, the Oculus Rift requires a computer with a powerful GPU. Oculus VR's recommended specs for the Rift include an NVIDIA GTX 970, AMD 290, or equivalent, because the Oculus Rift needs to render approximately 400 million shaded pixels per second. Mac machines, even the high-end ones, don't have the graphics power to handle that kind of system load. With interest in virtual reality devices like the Oculus Rift picking up, Apple will need to focus more heavily on the graphics capabilities with Macs if it hopes to keep up with PC makers and avoid disappointing customers who want to use the latest technology and gaming peripherals. Rumors suggest Apple is even developing its own virtual reality headset, so there's a good chance the company is already well aware of the need for improved GPUs and working towards improvements.

the more pressing thing here STILL not addressed is the rift's guy diet. he used to be trim and became porky pig. he needs to work on that. little too much time with the gamezzzz there. doesn't help the image for the most obese the population has ever been. vr on a treadmill and I will be impressed.

I love how people that don't want to purchase the device are condescending to those that do.

Obviously they don't know about Metal, which can allow any Intel integrated graphics to compete with discrete cards. Amateurs.
