Realise this: YOU enjoy building "custom" PCs and installing Mac OS X on them; great. Building a PC from off-the-shelf "components" (actually, more like LEGO blocks - you didn't design the PCB, lay out the tracks, etch it, tin it, solder paste, populate and solder it yourself - any half competent "engineer" ( :D ) can plug together some cards, turn off the apt UEFI options and install Mac OS X, then faff around with kernel extensions. You speak as if you've just discovered nano technology and built a working nano mechanism on a substrate... whereas, ALL YOU HAVE DONE is hack together a bunch of known-good plug-together "building blocks" by following online tutorials from "hackintosh" sites, tried different settings and crossed your fingers until it worked - BELIEVE ME - I HAVE BEEN THERE - it's no fun, and I thoroughly hope not to EVER do it again, because, ya know, life's just too short for all that CRAP, and I like GOOD DESIGN, you know?

No one cares what "custom" garbage hardware you've put in your "custom" case (did you MAKE the case, too?)

Please, stop assuming you're the core of all earthly knowledge, learn some humilty, and go play with your DUPLO.

I died reading this. You sir are amazing.

So ... to use Occulus Rift on a Mac, it would need a graphics processor even more expensive than the ones currently used on Mac's. Sometimes it seems to me that people who do not code well often blame the capabilities of the hardware. Just sayin'...

What you're saying is also absolutely hogwash, so you shouldn't be "Just sayin'".

I dont think you recognise the sort of hardware number crunching requirement that VR requires. THe sort of image processing capabilities. Apple, for the quality of build that they do provide, Do not have hardware in any of their current lineup that meets these requirements. THis has nothing to do with "people who can't code".

One single acronym hangs in the balance to decide the fate of "hackintosh":

ARM

Wait for it... it's coming, sooner or later ;)

Better dig out those newegg receipts :D

so I'll need several thousand dollars to buy the computer and the peripheral? ummm. It sounds neat but no thanks. Besides give it a few years and if its that awesome of an idea it'll come down in price as the specs meet the demand.

it may be, but no one else plays nice and talks crap non-stop so i'm doing it too. The thing is about 90% know how to build. I did it in 08 by looking at a text document. Video not required, but I also come from a gen that didn't need their penis held when they took a piss. I could imagine Pi fanboys. yuck. nerds, nerds everywhere. Stay in your holes!!!

Well they're clever people, but I am not so sure that many of them realise that there's ALWAYS someone of higher knowledge than oneself, and although the Raspberry Pi is all very nice... yeah... got 2 myself, but after the initial box opening and seeing ANOTHER generic green PCB, my mind says "Okay - I've got one and I've installed Apache - so what, and NOW what?".

Apple creates REAL, tangible excitement, and for myriad good reasons, but the marketing teams of other tech products can only stand back, marvel, and attempt (poorly) to emulate what it is they see ON THE SURFACE, and repeatedly fail at doing so with conviction.

You can travel the world for that price - it's called REAL REALITY, and you get to MEET people and see the REAL landmarks :D hehe

If you want to play games, BUY A GAMES CONSOLE.

If only.

Quoting a semi random source:

But how do they pan out compared to PC graphics cards? The Xbox One is said to be on-par with a Radeon 7790, the PS4 a Radeon 7870. Unless you're a PC gamer, that's really not going to mean much.

Let's reduce it to cold hard cash. That the Radeon 7790 costs around £100 and the Radeon 7870 £150 tells you all you need to know.

http://www.trustedreviews.com/opinions/xbox-one-vs-sony-ps4_Page-2

You might know the two cards as "Bonaire" and "Tahiti XT". In other words, both machines are well below the required specifications.

A moment ago you were telling us, in your shouty, ranty, opinionated way, how eager you were to learn how to replace components in an iMac. You know you can go to the Apple shop and just replace it with a newer model if you want an upgrade, or get it fixed if it's broken. Anybody else see a contradiction here?

Replace = repair or BGA reflow. I have been a fully qualified electronics repair and production engineer since 1994.

Nice try.

Yeah, its right up there with 3D TV, Curved screens, smart TVs etc etc etc

They will all go the way of the VCR

you mean, the VCR tech? the same basic tech that launched in the 60's and lasted as primary means of home video recording all the way up to the 2000's?

40 someodd years would be amazing for VR to last around :p

Racing game on a Mac vs racing game on a gaming PC. Both in-game shots, the one at the right running at 60fps in 4K resolution (with a beast of a gaming rig of course).

But it is all about how the device itself looks, isn't it? Who cares about what it can actually output to the screen... Only idiots care about details like that.

I got the Nvidia Shield TV for my birthday the other day and I have been absolutely LOVING playing Half Life 2 on it!! Does the game have cutting edge graphics? Hell no! Is it one of THE best games? Hell yes!!

So I utterly support what you said. Millions of console gamers round the world would agree too although their games look pretty, a high end PC can look much better.

You don't think thats to be expected? I'm not defending Apple here but yeah your PS4 is going to blow away most PCs. Its architecture is engineered around graphics performance.
Except it isn't. PS4 is behind the times compared to the even the mobile 960

together fragile hard/software combos, JUST to save some money and squeeze a meagre amount of performance out of your machine... and for what - GAMES? Those who would argue "well then I wouldn't buy a Mac, I'll go back to Windows" - well okay - you didn't even need a Mac in the first place, so good bye, farewell.

Actually...the lack of decent graphics cards also hurts non gaming. Especially with the AMD call they made. Nvidia CUDA says hi. Want to offset some CPU load for intense tasks, CUDA can do that for you (if you or app codes for it ofc). Nvidia played it smart here. Its how they picked up non gaming business. You can now justify a gaming card for legit work reasons.

They watch other people build pc's on youtube when they know how. Could watch a good movie but no, this gen of gamers watch someone build a pc. even worse at times they just show parts and don't even build and 200k watch the vid. pathetic sad community of pathetic men.

I am not going to defend the gamers, but you have to see the irony, your complaining about a stereotype on a forum that is a fan and supports a giant consumer electronics corporation, and you get excited about rumours of up coming consumer electronics by said company...

Anyways.......Apple's nature would dictate that if they added the hardware powerful enough to drive a VR experience, they would CERTAINLY want to own the ecosystem, accessories, (read eyeballs). I don't see them giving companies like Oculus a hand in their growth. Whether they SHOULD, is another matter.

And based on their current trends, they are too busy having challenges with basic technology like ATV4 and other product lines right now for anything like that to succeed.

Personally I think this whole 3D VR headset fad will die out pretty quick anyway, I mean I can just about remember playing VR games at London's Trocadero about 25 years ago at least! Their time is looonnnngggg past I think.

Palmer Lucky is correct and it's well known that Mac's don't offer the same level of power that a PC can bring. A video card like the Nvidia 970 is not even the fastest video card on the market but yet the most expensive Mac does not even match it.
So either you guys can call Palmer Lucky (and VR users) fools or be vocal in making Apple produce a powerful computer that can run games and VR. Otherwise enjoy bad mouthing VR users while you sit on the sidelines.

I've owned a very large number of Apple computers, nearly every model of desktop and laptop built since 1991. My experience has found them to be much better than "good" mine have been excellent.

If all of the iOS devices were as good, I'd have a much higher opinion of the Cupertino Co.

Apple simply chooses to avoid targeting gaming. That's a well known choice I respect. Apple knows it's target market well and takes good care of that sector. Masters at Sales and Marketing, Apple has maximized what they have chosen to offer and has profited handsomely.

Hey, I used to WORK at the Troc around 1998, installing footfall counting systems - lovely memories :D

Frankly, I think VR has some application to professional designers, a front end to cadcam and the like, and of course, the motorcycle gangs of the gaming world will love new ways of blasting orcs and such, but really, niche, niche, niche. It will be interesting when it comes down to the average person, with a killer app or two. It is totally useless for filmed fiction, because it overwhelms the artist's intention. Maybe a reality TV show where what they want you to look at is just as stupid as what they don't want you to look at? Tour homes on the market? Good for real estate. But it's SO much less than it's imagined to be.

BE GONE with your balanced, sensible rationality! GO! There's no place for you here! :D

We all saw how Google Gl(ASS) took off :D

~ 3D Printing? Anyone? .... anyone? It's going to "change the world" >_<

If you think of more examples of hype vs reality, please add to this list.

The technology today is pretty different compared to 25 years ago thank God. Oculus Rift/HTC Vive is not the virtual boy from the 90's.

You aren't thinking about it enough. Engineering pre-viz, medical services, architectural pre viz. Augmented reality. The list goes on.

Yeah. All interesting concepts, but it's still in the blue-sky faze. Wake me when there's something interesting for the average person. Artificial intelligence? Great. Powerful networking tools? Terrific. Instantaneous translation for meeting people in other cultures? Exploring stories with multi-threaded plots you can visit over and over again? Much better than this overindulged visual cortex crap. Instant ADD for Everyone!

Obviously "good" refers to higher-powered GPUs. Macs are obviously "good" computers by most measures b Baitclicky headline.
I believe he actually said that, so while it fits the definition of bait click, it is accurate.

Way to fragment your market before you even get started. Also, if VR won't work on your average joe's high end computer, good luck with mass adoption.
As I said somewhere else, you can make a Pixar movie, but not use this. What does that tell you? Perhaps the developers need to learn how to be more efficient in coding

#legit I mean really. You can't argue against Oculus here. Not if you believe Apple represents quality experiences. Why would Oculus want to offer their headset on a system that wouldn't give the user a quality experience.
Can't argue with them, no. But he should have chosen his wording a bit more. unless.... he just wanted a ton of press on sites that would have ignored him.
