I've actually ordered one of each MacBook Pro because I am still in debate over which to get and I didn't want to miss out on the rebate which ends tomorrow. I'll be cancelling one...just not sure which yet. For the slight increase in processor power with the more expensive 1.83 dual, I'm starting to think that the 1.67 dual will probably be sufficient...even after adding a 1 GB stick of RAM, it comes out $400.00 cheaper. And I really don't need the extra 20 GB of hard drive space (I have a 250GB LaCie external drive) or the faster video card (I mostly do photo editing, very little video except for the occasional home movie).

Decisions, decisions....

Yea, me too. I am flipping between MBP 1.67 and iMac 20" 2G. They both offer $150 rebate. I went to Apple Store on Friday and played with the iMac 2G, I actually kinda like it. But I also want a MacBook so that I can bring it to work and watch movies. If I get the MBP, I'll receive it after my birthday and after the rebate filing deadline.

Really have to think about it...

Go with the IMac and then pickup an ibook for cheap when their replacements arrive.

What gets me is why (both) "I bought a MacBook Pro" threads have very little replies compared to the ~850 that the iMac one does, because according to apple's best seller list, MacBook Pro is a few spots above the iMacs.

I noticed that too. Especially I woud think closer to the release date the threads would start to heat up again.

Um, maybe because they haven't shipped yet.
The iMac thread includes many peoples experiences with their new computers. No one actually has a MBP yet, so there isn't all that much to post about.

It's best not to read too much into that number. Charge indicator attempts for LiPoly batteries are notoriously inaccurate, they tend to discharge unevenly.

Couldn't have said it better myself

I'm am really anxious to get my MacBook. Only a week and a half til it ships.
A week and a half...

A week and a half...

P.S. Could a Mod merge the two threads please?

Well, I just sold the PowerBook in my signature, so I am awaiting on the money from that, and then I will be placing my order for a MacBook Pro. I'm going to get the 1.67 GHz, and 512 MB Ram.

Going along with the battery thing, that really isn't that bad considering it was configured for high performance. If you want to conserve battery power, you can take one of the cores offline, turn down the brightness of the display, and that should give you a significant boost in battery life.

Hey guys, I'm new to the thread.

My MacBook Pro is expected to ship on February 20th.

I'm very anxious and can't wait for it to arrive.

I purchased the 1.83 Ghz model and upgraded the HD to 7200 RPM.

Since I haven't owned a PowerBook before, I don't know what kind of power saving options they have.... but I'm hoping the MacBook Pro will have such options that would do just what you're talking about. One thing I love about my IBM T42 is that when it's running on AC power, it's fully functional, and when it's on battery, I can set it to use much lower settings and get a LOT of battery life (with wireless disabled, I can get upwards of almost 7 hours with the larger battery that's available for it.)

Hmmmm...you're right, I didn't even realize that the shipping date is after the rebate deadline...which means that Amazon will most certainly be shipping out before the projected dates they are giving...or else there would be a lot of ticked-off customers.

Of course, since I'm not part of Amazon, I can't say for sure... but I work for dealmac.com and the guys that have worked there longer than me responded to this concern... and they said that Amazon has been one of the best we've dealt with in redeeming rebates. I would imagine that they would take into consideration the fact that Apple may be shipping them out right by that deadline and act accordingly in favor of the customer.

Well the rebate for my iMac Core Duo has yet to let me claim it. Keeps saying my receipt is invalid. :( Quite frustrated. Amazon says they'll write me back in a few days.

I agree...I love Amazon and their customer service is top-notch which is why I have bought my last two Macs from them. No worries.

I'm really surprised to hear this...when did you order the iMac and when was the rebate deadline?

I've ordered many of my Macs through Amazon...don't cancel because they always over-estimate the delivery time just to cover the bases. Every time I've ordered from them, my Mac's have arrived ahead of schedule. And remember, you're paying no sales tax (at least if you live outside of Washington state) and you get the $150.00 rebate...all around $300.00 worth of savings and worth it, IMHO.
Oh, and I too have placed an order with Amazon for the 1.83 MacBook Pro...estimated delivery is April 5th.

I also ordered a 1.83 MBP from Amazon. Placed order on Jan 22, for stated delivery on March 24 (I expect that they will ship sooner). I canceled an Apple Store order placed on Jan 10 because of the $375 savings.

PowerBooks (and I am assuming MacBook Pros) have all of the features I talked about, and they have some of the ones you are describing as well. There are different options that you can set for when it is connected to an AC adapter, and the settings will change when you unplug it if you tell it to do so.

I think the most essential power saving feature will be shutting down one of the cores.

Indeed...

I noticed on anandtech.com's review of the new iMac Core Duo, the reviewer was able to turn off one of the two cores. If that functionality is available along with noticible dimming of the screen (since it is 67% brighter), then battery life should improve to at least 3:30-4:00 real world computing hours I hope. At least as good as the battery life on the last Gen. of 15" 1.67 Powerbooks for the 1.67 MacBook Pro's. Oh and since this is my first post in this thread, I've got a MacBook Pro 1.83 w/upgraded HD to 100 GB @ 7,200. Stuck with the gig of ram and hope to throw in another gig shortly after it arrives. Does anyone know what kind of ram (like manufacturer) that apple uses? My friend's iBook had viking ram when Apple sent his, but I've also heard of claims of apple using kennsington (i believe that's the name) ram as well. I just want to make sure I get the same thing they use, while still avoiding that $300 price tag for a extra gig. I've heard good things about crucial as a fallback, but I'd really like the same thing that's already in there from Apple so I can rest assured of good co-operation between the two. By the way, can't wait for shipping on Feb. 15th, Delivered by or before Feb. 23rd, and ordered 2:20 P.M. January 10th. Oddly enough, live in Oregon and get a estimated delivery of Feb. 23rd while I've read a lot of reports in these and AppleInsiders threads about people who live in the UK getting delivery dates of Feb. 21st even though they ordered later then I did. As for those isolated and rare shipping on Feb. 7th people, I don't know about that... Unless they have connections or work at MacWorld Magazine or New York Times or CNET etc., I just don't know...

Upgraded to the Max

Well, I ordered my MBP a few days after the Keynote. It is scheduled to be shipped the 15th and I am praying for sooner. But the stats:

MacBook Pro
1.83 GHz
2 x 1 GB RAM (upgraded separately)
256 GDDR3 VRAM ATI x1600
100 GB 7200 RPM HD
and the Best feature...OSX

I got that--you get it if you paid the $15 for 2-3 day shipping.
