oh dear... my oft-malfunctioning nano has really done it this time. On today's run it reset itself every 5 minutes or so. Couldn't even get through one song sometimes. :( I don't want to buy a new nano because I have an iphone, so never use the nano for anything but nike+. But if I can't fix it by restoring to factory settings with itunes... I think I'll have no choice.
Bummer. From what you are telling it sounds like it was just a matter of time before the fat lady began to sung. How long have you had it?

I do - I'll finally pull my replacement out of the packaging and calibrate it and be good to go! Hopefully my dog won't eat this receiver like he did the other...

Wait - if the doggie did not pass it then we can use his/her miles...;)

QC - tragedy - I had the same issue last year - these puppies are not sweat proof - I think it gets in a fry's the little logic board...

Yes, I've known this was coming for a while. I've posted in past nike+ threads how many problems I've had with it. I got it in Nov '05, so it's at 2+ years now.

Yup, I think you're right. 2 years is not really that long of a time to have an ipod, but this one has been through a lot of miles.

What??? are you serious? Is the Nano that sensitive?
I am new to the Nano, but I was under the impression it was much more robust than that. I mean you sweat when you run... I do...ALL of me.
Where are you suppose to put the iPod to keep it safe? What do you do when it rains? It is raining more or less every other day here now.

I have had it in a jacket pocket so far, but I can see it gets very moist. Not to mention when it rains.

*lloyd*'s nano got fried when he got caught in the rain. Hopefully he can get another soon (need the miles).

I have a 3rd gen in a marware case that straps to my wrist. When I remove it from the case the back of the nano is covered in sweat. Looks like some moisture will get in eventually.

i've had the exact same problem with my 1st gen nano. i mainly use my 3rd gen now though, b/c the old one barely lasts a 45 minute run now!

but back to your problem - on mine, it seemed to fix itself if i plugged it back into my mac (kinda hard to do when you're running though). it continued to do that every once in a while, so i restored it. the problem came back eventually though.

I dunno. Mine has been in the rain plenty of times, and gotten damp from sweat plenty more than that. Who knows what finally did it.

Didn't you used to have 2 first gen nanos? One white and one black? Is one gone? Does your 3rd gen play nicely with the nike+ kit?

I'll give it another shot tomorrow, following the restore. It's clear that it's on the way out, but whether that's tomorrow or in a couple more months remains to be seen.

the black one is now my girlfriend's, and she was using, but she ran a half-marathon on thanksgiving, and it rained, and the ipod messed up. it works now, but i bought her a 3rd gen for xmas, and so she's mainly using that now.

the software is different on the 3rd gen nanos. i really like it much better. feels more responsive and reliable (doesn't mean it really is more reliable though)

i'm sure yours will continue to work, but also continue to have the same problem. i like the new nanos, but if money is an issue, you can get a used 2nd gen for cheaper. it's up to you

That was my same issue - with the winter I would be able to wear the case over a layer and that helped, but in the summer - forget it just soaked...the thing needs a way to be either attached to a human in a less sweaty spot or clipped on or something - it got to the point for mine that the restores no longer did anything and it behaved like the battery was bad and then when i replaced the battery it was proven to be dead...I can only blame the toxic moisture that seeps from my pores...;)

that's another reason why i just carry mine in my hand. i still get sweat on it, but probably not as much as i would if it was strapped on my arm or something

Oh, ok, well that's good to know. I thought you had said once before that the 3rd gens had some problems working correctly with nike+.

I put mine in a case that clips to my waistband. I think that keeps it about as far from sweat as is possible while running. I've never tried an armband, but I don't think I'd like it very much.

so basically, the armbands are (at least in the summer) just crap? Even Nike's own armband?

well, they have their purposes, but they do absorb sweat. so i only use them when i'm running/playing with my brother or something.

they did. but they fixed it with a software update.

that's what my girlfriend does. i tried it once, but the case i have isn't very good, and it felt like the ipod was bouncing a lot. i might try again with a better case one day.

yeah, i've tried an armband before, and i didn't like it very much. it either felt too tight or too loose on my arm the whole time. maybe it's just me though

What case did you buy? Can you recommend it?

It's this one (but for a 1st gen nano, which is what I have).

It's served me well since I got this nano, and I definitely recommend it.

Of course, remember that I'm the one with the dying nano, so take that recommendation for what it's worth.

ah ha, great to know that.

Today my nano did Ok though (having restored it last night). I'm under no illusions that it will survive much longer, but I'm going to ride it until it totally dies.

Thanks! I am sure your solution is better than what I use now (in my pocket). Just one more question. Is there an opening for the transmitter at the bottom of the case or did you have to modify it yourself?

yep.

you're probably having the same problem that i have with mine. i think it'll last a good while, but continue to give you problems. and then the battery will slowly die. mine lasts maybe 1 hour if i'm lucky

No problem. :) The case closes at the bottom with a velcro piece, so if you just leave that unfastened there is room for the transmitter. And then you can seal it up if you're using the nano not with nike+. :)

The battery is already on the way out as well. Lasts shorter and shorter these days, but can still make it through a long run (which sounds good, until you remember that the original battery life was supposed to be 12 or 18 hours or something).

yep. seems like yours is doing exactly what mine has been doing. i got tired of all the restarting, so i just got a new one. i never could figure out what made it restart. it seemed to do it at random. but once it starts to restart, you can't run with it until you plug it back into your computer.

Yeah, I'm pretty tempted to just order a new one and be done with it. I mean, it's gonna happen sooner or later, so why wait for this nano to spoil more of my runs (and I've been sooo good about controlling my apple-product addiction lately... :D)?

But on the other hand, why pay for a nano I'll only use for running before I have to? I'm so indecisive. :p

i know how you feel. i used my $100 off from my iPhone to get mine, so it made it a little easier for me to decide to go ahead and get it.

i'm happy with it so far, after they fixed the problems.

i just got a new sensor this weekend, and now i have to calibrate it
