it's Patellar Femoral Syndrome (aka Patellofemoral syndrome, aka chrondomalacia patella), and there is no "cure," only treatment (exercises, stretches, icing, etc.) that causes the problem to recede to unproblematic levels. Basically, it's a problem caused by the mistracking of the kneecap.

I've had it for years, and it was mostly under control until I fell on the ice a few months ago. The resulting bruising made the whole area sore and inflamed again, and the problems have gotten worse from there.

i'm sorry to hear that. do you plan to take any time off for it? i hope you're at least running less

my sportsband shipped today. it should be here by the end of the week

I run with one of these sports bands. When I started running seriously (about 9 months) ago I was fine, but after a few over exerting days of running I ended up hurting something in my knee. My Dad's a Dr. and diagnosed it as runner's knee. After about 3 months of using the band I don't even think about my knee anymore while running.

But if something is hurting (other than sore muscles) ice! ice! ice!
And don't over do it!

I think Twood is talking about the Nike sportsband.
You are talking about knee braces right?

yes, i was talking about the new nike+ sportsband. though i do have a knee brace also, but don't have to run with it currently

Looks like I am going to be down on the mileage for a while, strained my ankle playing football (uk) the other night. My Blades (studs) got caught in the turf and a went over on it.

I was entered into the Bristol 10k in a week or so's time

i'm sorry to hear (and see) that. i had a similar injury in basketball last semester, and mine looked a lot like yours. just be careful the next few days, they are very important

Haven't run since Monday, and I don't know when I will again. When my knee stops hurting, I guess.

Ice is really good. The support band helps, but what ultimately "fixes" the problem is strengthening the quad so that the kneecap can track correctly on its own.

ow, that looks painful! Ice, ibuprofen/naproxen, and lots of rest are about all you can do...

you are better than i am. i can't take that long off, but i am in the middle of a season i guess. after this season, i'm done with college running, so maybe i'll be able to take more time off when i need it.

Agreed. Quad strength and ultimately rest. When I started having the problems with my knee I had the struggle of trying to continue training. With slow workouts and plenty of rest between runs my knee has strengthened up. I still can feel it though if I bend my leg too much.
After my marathon I will give myself a months rest and hopefully I can stop using the strap.

i think it's more of strengthening all the muscles that attach near the knee, including your hamstring as well. and stretching your IT band

i got a sprained ankle grappling two days ago so i may be out for a couple of days too..I went back into training today and it s pretty sore, we'll see what happens next...

yes I htink im taking tomorrow off as well, can i ask you guys for some help here,, I am trying to get my sister setup with the nike + her laptop it's an old pc but more than capable (i think) of running this thing. the ipod syncs, everything seems to be set up properly, itunes claims to be sending the work out to nikeplus.com all her runs are still saved in her iPod, BUT BUT BUT it never actually gets to her nikeplus account, her account is still at zero runs. When i try to click on visit nikeplus.com in iTunes from the nike+ipod tab it says (and unknown error ocurred..error (-23),, check your conectivity or osmehting liek that and try again,, well teh connectivity is fine , she can d/l stuff from itunes, she can surf the web, go into her nike account and eveything, what am i missing here? it's really frustrating, I m not a windows user.. and have googled for help and found nothing.. thx in advance guys... oh and in her itunes nike+ipod tab her actual LoginID does not show, so i am thinking her nikeplus account is not synced to her itunes but have no idea how to go onto doing that...

not quite sure what to tell you. maybe post this in the nike+ forums?

believe me, I hate not running. But I also hate running in pain, and not being able to run like I should. A little time off now will mean more, and better, running shortly.

I have a question about running and i figure you guys are the best to ask. Is running everyday a problem i am now getting in the habit of doing it everyday is there anything wrong with this? I mean its not very taxing i am in great shape i go to the gym and lift all the time i am 5% body fat so i dont really have problems running but i read alot eventually it really messes up the lims in ur legs any truth to this?

well there's a lot more to that. like how much are you running everyday? are you running on pavement? do you stretch any?

if you don't take care of yourself, and you run on pavement everyday, then you could hurt yourself

I run anywhere from 2- 4.5 miles a day on pavement yeah and no i dont really stretch, does running on pavement really make a big difference there is a track at my school and at a park a couple miles away but i really hate running on tracks the whole lap thing makes it much harder for me to run having a destination makes it much easier for me it has something to do with not feeling like i am going somewhere i guess lol. I am not really trying to run in marathons like alot of people here to seem to be, i lost alot of weight a year ago and i run to help maintain my weight loss since i have reached my goal weight

yes running on pavement can be really tough on your legs/joints and such, i try to keep pavement running to a minimum, also i am a heavy guy (225lbs) so i try to stick to trails and such and not so many uphills or downhills...

yeah, i wouldn't recommend running on pavement all the time. a track really isn't that much better. you need some kind of dirt, grass, or cinder surface. like at a park or something.

but, you do need to try to stretch more. it will keep you from getting injuries and such

there is nothing inherently dangerous in running every day. Most serious runners do. However, as others have said, you do want to be aware of what you're running on. Concrete is terribly unyielding, so it causes a lot of strain on your legs. Even asphalt is a lot better for your legs.

However, at 2-4.5 miles per day, I think you will probably be fine. The most important thing is simply listening to your body. If you're having pain beyond just muscle soreness, then it's time to run less, take time off, start icing, take anti-inflamatories, etc. If you're not having pain, you're probably fine.

yeah you should be fine. but maybe after awhile your joints get sore, try to run on grass or dirt or cinder, if you can.

thanks for the link. that seems nice and all, but looks like that could take a long time before released (if it is released)

Just recieved my Nike+ Sportband ! it looks great

Comes with a Nike+ shoes thingy to replace my smelly battered one :D
