Lastly, it's not my fault that I want Merom. :) I've caught this fever from reading all the postings on this site!

There's nothing wrong with wanting a C2D system. I can't wait to get mine. But you've got a kick butt computer there, and I hope it's everything you dreamed it would be. :)

The good news is, when you're ready to upgrade a year or two or three down the road, god willing there'll still be apple there ready to help you out with an even better computer. For right now though, you have one of the best laptops on the market, and just because the merom is coming out, that doesn't mean it'll be any less powerful.

Congratulations on your new Mac! I'm actually a little envious that you already have a MBP and I don't. :(

Thanks for the info, that's great! I know tons about PCs, but I am almost clueless when it comes to a MAC. I've heard about all the

Not a problem. While we're at it (slightly off topic here.. feel free to P.M. a reply if you wish). Have you found any AD managing tools that run natively on the MAC? I plan (as you probably do) to install Parallels. Everything I know says Parallels will run just honky dory on the current Intel chips.. just make sure you have alot of memory (I'm going to deck out my MB with 2GB of RAM). Other then that.. it will be sooooooooooo nice to not have to reboot into Windows to make a quick change (currently I either Terminal Service from Linux into the Domain Controller.. or (in the case of Cisco VPN) have to reboot into Windows.

Ship date is September 6th :)

That's how I'm looking at it. Either I get the free upgrade now (hehe yeah right)... or a year or two down the road I'll sell the current MB and get a new one with more bells and whistles.. MBs seem to be holding their value pretty well on eBay :D

Yes but I didn't mean custom configured. You better refuse receipt and call Apple to tell them you will be doing so and call your credit card company to make sure they know you are doing so so you will get the credit.

I'll ask this again. Will a credit card company take your side if you change your mind on something you ordered and refuse receipt? I would think most wouldn't.

So with all this dumping going on, Apple better have at least equal hardware. They were first out with the core 2 duo xeon and with yonah.

But with Merom/Conroe, make no mistake, they have been pansted.

But right now, apple HAS at least equal hardware. MEROM LAPTOPS ARE NOT SHIPPING. You're comparing vaporware with shipping hardware, a bogus comparison.

And since you've brought up conroe, which PC makers are currently shipping conroe desktops?

bigbossbmb said:
I don't know about woodcrest...but they were definitely not the first with yonah.

They were, the iMacs were the first yonah machines to ship. They weren't the first to ship yonah laptops, but they were within a week or two so nobody cared. Woodcrest was also within a week or two of PC's so nobody cared about that either. I'm not sure why investors would freak out over merom when the previous "late" releases turned out to be huge hits.

To be fair to direzz, he said that every mac LAPTOP he bought has sucked, not every computer.

To be fair, the question why he still keeps buying them if they always break still applies.

Thanks!! This laptop really rocks!! I thought I'd never say this, but why do we need PCs?

I am super impressed and it has not been 24 hours yet.

I have not seen any AD tools that natively run in MAC, but what I did find out about and download was Remote Desktop for MAC! I had no idea whatsoever that was available. That's even better than having native tools! I can just install my heavy tools on a resource server and RDP to it. This is getting better by the minute!

Oh yeah :) Just about everyone upstairs here in our NOC has a MAC. I'm left out at the moment, but will soon be a part... in my defense I do run Linux :p

Aftermarket Memory for MBP

Last week I read in one of these forums that it's better to purchase extra RAM aftermarket. So, I ordeded the MBP with 2x512 with a plan to get 2x1gb shortly thereafter. Where is the best site to go to? If I need to put this question somewhere else, please direct me. Thanks!

Why did you not order 1x1GB? That way you'd only need to buy one 1GB stick.

You go THROUGH Ramseeker.com to get the lowest price from Omni Technologies. Optival is their bargain ram. Current price is $86.89 per 1GB Stick you can click here to get that price. I've provided you with a link from this post to Omni as if you went through Ramseeker.com. :)

Omni Optival RAM is excellent reliable quality. I have bought many siticks from them with never a problem.

low-end junky bargain RAM is the best possible way to make your system unstable and prone to kernel panics. the problem is that sometimes the cheap stuff works fine, sometimes it does not.

but this is fodder for another thread.

I saw a deal on Ebay for two 1GB sticks sold together and it was $100 cheaper to get the two 512s. Honestly, I'm impressed with the 1GB now. I can't wait to see how it performs with 2GB.

You might also consider the G.Skill RAM sold by newegg.com, which seems to currently be selling for $89.99 a stick (seems like the price has gone up a bit , it was $82.99 yesterday). I've heard a number of MacBook and MBP owners have had good experiences with this RAM.

So it's Tuesday.... no refresh on Apple's front page. Looks like we wait again.

I honestly can't see them updating MBs, MBPs, MMs, or iMs until after this free iPod deal is over and done with and they know for sure they have a decent supply of the new chips to actually stick in the computers. Sounds like we'll have to wait until Paris or shortly after.

Another reason is that since I wanted two sticks of the same type. I don't know if this is true of Apple or not but most companies don't install the best ram on the market when they ship. I wanted to get two high quality sticks of ram at the best price. So far, I see a lot of good reviews about Omni and Crucial.

I'm really tired of waiting (I know nobody has a gun pointing to my head), but I would like to have a new MBP. So this has make me think: It's worth the wait? I mean, everybody says the jump from CD to CD2 it's not as big as we can imagine (of course, we all want to have the latest and newest hardware), that the 32bit vs 64bit doesn't matters that much, so I think this is a very important question, what are we expecting for? 2.33 CD2? (from 2.16 CD), more memory, 4 GB Ram? Is this possible? or we'll stay on the 2 GB standard? More video memory? 512 MB? That's too much don't you think? The actual MBP jumped from 128 to 256, a bigger HD? Maybe 160 GB?, or what other features you think we'll see from the new MBP?
Definetley, I would like to buy the Merom MBP, but I'm going to NYC for vacations, from september 1 to 8, I have the money (for the 17" MBP), and I would like to buy one.
Just to let you guys know, I have a 17" PB, the last one (1.67 Ghz.), and I'm very happy whit it. I only want to buy the MBP because Boot Camp and Windows (I love the Microsoft Flight Simulator) and the advantages of using the two OS, thats all, I'm a Photoshop and Illustrator user (not a heavy user), so I'll appreciate any advice.

Thanks.

Look at places like: http://www.engadget.com/tag/core2duo

Even the stores like Fry's have loads of Core 2 Duo chips for do-it-yourself PCs.

Conroe is everywhere (except for Apple, so far ;) ).

The list of core 2 duo articles you linked to at engadget are references to the Merom Core 2 Duo for laptops (all of which have been announced, but aren't going to be shipping for a few weeks).

The desktop Conroe chip isn't "everywhere" yet - as you said, it seems to most commonly be found as a DIY part at this point, and other companies are starting to roll it out more (the Conroe chip had an earlier availability date).

Does Apple usually update their store overnight, or would it happen at the start of business, CDT (Cupertino Daylight Time)?

Looking at the engadget page, the ones I clicked to aren't shipping yet. Which ones are shipping now?

Fry's having the chips isn't the same thing as PC makers shipping them in machines.

There seem to be many companies offering Conroe, but it appears most of the ship dates occur in September.

#1 for me is the redesign that will make it easy to change HDs. If they don't do that, I will buy a C2D MacBook. But they will.

2. A little bit Faster - 2.33GHz for sure.
3. A little bit Cooler.
4. Much longer battery life.
5. New look - Black Anodized Aluminum is my GUESS-HOPE.
6. 64-bit Leopard Ready.
7. Bragging Rights.
8. Rev B is always more reliable.
9. The new wow factor.
10. Patience will pay off big time.

I really wouldn't be expecting "much longer" battery life, based on what we've heard so far. It sounds like you'll be lucky to get an extra half hour out of it.

Core2Duo

I don't think the sole play in waiting is the Core2duo upgrade. I think there's a good chance the pricing for the black MB will come down as well.
