PC Perspectives Found 31% Longer Battery Life With 2.33GHz Merom Vs. 2.16GHz Yonah

I really wouldn't be expecting "much longer" battery life, based on what we've heard so far. It sounds like you'll be lucky to get an extra half hour out of it.
31% more battery life in the PC Perspectives Test.

Thank you very much for your repply Multimedia, but now I´m worst than before!!! Black Aluminium!!! Wow, I have my money ready to spend on it, my vacations ready, want to go to the Apple Store and buy one, get back to home with a brand new MBP, but with this, I want to cry!!!

Come on Apple!!! What are you waiting for!!! I´m a very good guy....

imac in uk.

Dont know if this is relevant, but on the UK apple store if you choose to upgrade RAM or graphics card on an imac, there's a 9 to 11 day wait on the shipping!

Just in time to put core 2 duos in them me thinks.......

Just to check my math, if a Core 2 Duo T7600 runs for 157 minutes, and a Core Duo T2600 runs for 120 minutes, wouldn't you do ((157/120) - 1) x 100 to come up with about 31% better battery life?

31% Longer Battery Life To Be Exact

OK. Thanks. I put 25%+ on the headline. But thanks to you, I've changed it to 31%. I wanted to put up a conservative number. But if you insist. ;)

This is fantastic, and it does nothing but get me more excited to get my MBP sooner rather than later. But of course, I'll have to wait until they actually begin shipping the C2D MBP's. So later I guess. :(

you think if i call mac with a sappy story of a poor college student desperately in need of a computer, and is "ready to buy one of the other core 2 duo laptops instead ;)", someone will let me know when i can buy a core 2 duo?

Dell or HP if you want the satisfaction of having one on order right now. I doubt Apple will be that forthcoming with information about the C2D unfortunately. Still, you never know. :)

The people at Apple taking orders are probably just as in the dark as the rest of us.

Not so sure on that ... i went into the apple store at bluewater and asked about the new merom laptops and when they are hitting the shelfs and told her when i think it will be comming out ... the woman replied at first ..

"We dont have a clue when these are comming out ... we really dont ... not 1 clue when they are hitting the shelfs ... nothing at all... we really dont know"

Hmmm ... how many "We really dont knows" does she want to fit into the sentence ... So i dug a bit deeper and said that i think they will be hitting the shelfs with the new core 2 duo within the following weeks ... She then paused and looked at me and replied ...

"How did you find out this information ??"

Them exact words ....

I was like "Errrrr I have a friend who works for intel" ... Then i made my excuses and ran lol!

I think they do know something but fear for their jobs due to the firings of the staff about the Lepoard incident!! So they dont want to talk about future products etc etc!!

My experience!!

I think you really might be reading too much into it; from everything I've heard, the people at the retail Apple Stores are even less likely to know anything about product updates before they actually come out.

I think her "how did you find out this information?" question was probably more out of genuine curiosity, if anything, since there isn't any concrete information (although even the people at the Apple store are generally aware that "a few weeks" is probably likely).

Perhaps her responses were toned that way because she was afraid she was being tested or afraid of something else?

But I really doubt that Apple Store employees have some secret knowledge about when these are coming out.

Yeah, popular retail chains do get a lot of secret shoppers. She could have seen beta as perhaps one of those.

I don't hold a lot of credence is the knowledge of Apple Store employees. While I'm sure some of them are mac fans who do keep up with what's going on in the mac world, most are just people who needed a job and might have a slight familiarity with macs.

I went to an Apple Store a few weeks ago, just to salivate over their products. I started talking about merom with one of the employees, and he said he was getting ready to buy a MBP next week. I explained he should wait another month or so for the updates and he felt that was a good idea. He claimed he had heard of C2D, but didn't know anything about it, let alone that Apple would be adopting them into their systems. Of course, he could have just been pulling my leg, trying to get me to go ahead and buy a MBP that day.

Ok, first off...this is my first post EVER...so be gentle.

But now on to what i think is going to happen:

In my humble opinion, and after hours of scouring the net for months, infact I've been waiting for the new MBP since April, I think the date to watch is Sep 16th...

Now i really hope im wrong, but i just cant help feeling like all the signs are pointing to that date. Why?

Because: (not in any significant order)

1)Ipod promotion ends then. which true, doesn't mean much but i have a hard time seeing why apple would be driven profit-wise to offer new MB's & MBP's as a part of the promotion...sure, theyve done stuff like this before but I think theyre clearing out old inventory of Nano's just fine seeing as they cant quite keep up with the demand right now for MB's. Besides the people buying a laptop right now obviously a) need one or b)don't know about merom, so sure they're getting rid of Ipod's but they're also getting rid of non-merom MB's faster by giving away the ipod too...smart apple. with Merom quantities not able to fully support demand why try and create even more of a backlog and waiting period when theyre first released.

2)Paris Expo. Ok so i know there's no keynote and no ipods and all that stuff. but apple still has a knack for announcing SOMETHING at events such as these. and it nicely coincides with the end of the promotion. yeah yeah, new ipods but i think with core 2 dup it'llbe impossible to ONLY announce something ipod related.

3)I dont think apple is just popping in merom and sending the same notebook out on the market. Black case maybe, but with magnetic latch and easy access HD and Mem FOR SURE. Such changes take time especially to build up stock.

4) i think theyd want the publicity, at least SOME, if anything, so they can brag about how many of the initial problems were fixed as well as the tight new features theyre throwing in. A boost in market share PRIOR to Santa Rosa and Leopard sounds like a good idea. They're already going to sell more computers then ANYWAY, why not try your best to boost sales NOW BEFORE the holidays. This also partly explains why they wouldn't want to announce on the same day as all the other companies...it takes away from their gusto.

5)Now I'm shaky on this one, but wasn't there a thread about merom not being pin compatible with yonah in apple books? so internally they'd need to redo some stuff. if my memory serves me right it said to expect them in mid to late September.

6) This is the one that i havent seen suggested...apple.com's website update timeline. I know its random and not the best and most concrete reason but from what i've seen apple likes to change its website around 1ce a month. more appropriately every 3-4 weeks. at least since april that seems so. recent trend...apple ads ---> Mac Pro at WWDC --- > three weeks later, NEW ADs and ---> three weeks from now, SEP 16th.

In conclusion... with all the changes that should be happening AND the END of september ship dates that all the other companies are suggesting, apple would still be anouncing new MBP's before or at the same time as we could actually get our hands on them. so mathmatically, PARIS EXPO + IPOD PROMO + UPDATED DESIGN TIMELINE + WEB TIMING ...ALL = SEP 16th or thereabouts.

I apologize for the length...but if you were patient enough to read through this then you're patient enough to wait three more weeks.

ps...i like the new trend in performance numbers that im seeing for merom... makes me :)

pss...God I hope im wrong about all this. Sooner the better.

Yonah and merom are pin compatible.

From the merom guide http://guides.macrumors.com/Merom
Merom is pin compatible the Yonah's current socket and completely backwards compatible. All that would be required at worst would be BIOS/EFI update to install Merom in a current Yonah system.

And welcome to the forums. I'm new here myself, but everyone's really nice here from my experience.

I thought a MacBook had a magnetic latch. I'll admit I'm not paying careful attention.

I don't expect any MacBook changes besides the chip. I'm wondering if they'll do a stealth upgrade, so that with the initial orders, no one will be quite sure which chip they're getting.

I quite agree. Sorry i should have clarified. no macbook changes foreseeable any time soon but hopefully MBP changes, and not a magnetic latch but the same as MB...Im reallyyyyy hoping. if not, oh well, ill still buy it, but shhh dont tell apple.

I agree with you. With MB/MBP selling well, it would be a bad move to potentially dampen sales by effectively saying "you like what we have, but in X weeks we will have something better". Also, Apple keeps a simple line-up, so will stop producing yonah machines when they start producing merom machines unlike Dell which is offering both on models announced to have core 2.

All this talk about the MB and the MBP with new processors....

How about the Imacs? There seems to be less noise about them than the laptops.

All I want for christmas is an Imac 20" with the new C2D. It has been a few years since I was so exited about a christmas present.

All this talk about long shipping dates? Alienware?

Currently suffereing from Merom Fever, but all this talk of long long waits on the C2Ds with the 'others' (alienware/dell etc), just went on to alienware's site: estimated shipping date on a C2D 17" lappy 5th September, does sound delayed to me.
Also anyone noticed the carzy prices of the 17" C2D alienwaretops? With 2.16GHz C2D, 1GB ram, X1800, 120GB HDD: $2149 - compared to apple's slower 17" MBP for $2799.....

Latest Rumor out

Don’t Buy An Apple MacBook or MacBook Pro Just Yet
August 29 Richard Ozerman
If you’re currently in the market for an Apple MacBook or MacBook Pro—maybe you’re going back to school soon—don’t buy one just yet. Apple’s holding its annual Paris Expo on September 16, where they traditionally announce new products or upgrades to their old line of products. Rumor is, the same Core 2 Duo CPUs in Toshibas and Dells is going to hop in bed with the MacBook line as well.

If you can hold out for another two weeks, we advise you to do so. If you can’t, you can always buy a stock MacBook in a week and return it if there’s an announcement in Paris (if it’s under the 14 day limit). Built-to-order MacBooks can’t be returned no matter what.

Is the fifth of september today? No. That would be a delay.

If they really ship Sept. 5 (and who knows if they will or if they will bump that date), how do any of us know if Apple will announce merom notebooks on the fourth, shipping immediately?

While I'd love to hear an announcement that Core2Duo MBP's will be available in stores next week, I have a feeling this report/rumor is correct. The 16th will probably be the magic day.
