So if they're behind, which PC maker is shippiing conroe machines TODAY? I've asked this a couple times, and the only answers have been links to machines that haven't shipped yet, or links to chips on their own. Seriously, is anyone shippng PC's with conroe yet?

I picked up this PowerSpec PC from MicroCenter two weeks ago for a friend's new gaming system.

And the link says shipping in five to seven days. How is that shipping today? Did they have that model in stock in the store?

Well, I bit the bullet and listed my iMac and a Nintendo DS on eBay in order to buy a new MacBook when released.

What are the chances there'll be a bigger HD and a superdrive in the baseline model? I'd rather not have to shell out for the medium just for a superdrive, and then have to eBay a 2.5" HD of a reasonable size and bumble my way through installing it myself.

I think that if anything new is about to be released it will be in Paris. It would make sense to have as much new stuff as possible to announce (including the new chips, ipods, imacs, ibrooms, iwhatever)

Another theory may be that they are using the back to school season to clear the inventory of the current macs. I dont think that there is a significant % of possible buyers who know that these new chips are coming. This way they sell the rest of the current macs and clear the space for the new stuff lined up for Christmas.

So when you consider these two theories, we probably wont see anything new until Paris.

Well, I'm assuming the units at the store didn't just "magic" themselves there but were shipped... :D

They had this model in stock along with the $1,499 and $4,499 models.

Sorry, I misunderstood. So I guess there have been some in stock, but the site still lists 5-7 days before they're available from them. And I still haven't seen any of the mainstream PC makers showing them in stock. It's great that you were able to find conroe PC's, but if I wanted to buy one today I don't know where I'd find one.

It looks like they are shipping, but quantities are still small. Apple could announce conroe machines now, but if there are CPU supply constraints, customers would still be waiting a week or more. As with the meroms, is it really a big deal for apple to put off an announcment until they are able to ship (in quantity) to customers?

We'll have to wait and see if Apple announces anything about iPods (I'd certainly like to see a widescreen 6G), but Paris on the 16th looks to be the date we'll probably hear that at least MBP's with C2D are available and ready to ship to consumers.

Another theory may be that they are using the back to school season to clear the inventory of the current macs. I dont think that there is a significant % of possible buyers who know that these new chips are coming.

Coupled with the new ads, Apple is really pushing the average consumer to go get themselves some new macs, probably to do some inventory cleaning in prep for C2D MBP's and possibly MB's. In that sense, the ads have done their job from what I can tell. I had to stop two people I work with from buying MBP's now, so they could take advantage of the soon to be shipping C2D versions.

Alright, most of you know more about this then I do, so here's a question (well, situation):

I'm getting a macbook, and was just going to wait for Merom to come out (because I thought that it would be out before the iPod promotion was up). However, it seems like this may not be the case. I don't do any heavy duty work, mostly internet browsing, iphoto, itunes, dvd watching, etc. I already found someone (a friend), to buy the ipod from me, so I can save 200 dollars (canadian) on the purchase. Now if Merom is really worth the 200 dollars (for me) then I'll let her know I'm going to wait on the mac, and therefore, she won't get an iPod. I feel like, for me, the small increase in speed etc. isn't a huge deal, but what will 64bit processing do for me (a casual user, no high-end programs) when Leopard comes out? Will I regret saving 200 bucks, and wish I had the 64bit? or will i be alright running 32bits? what exactly does the 64bit do?

Another possible scenario: I'm getting the middle range macbook with upgraded ram (so I can't return it). If I order just normal macbook before the 16th, can I not open it, keep the ipod, then send it back, and upgrade to merom (and 1 gig) Sources are saying Sept 16 is the day to watch for, so is that a possibility.

I know this is kind of a mumbo-jumbo post, but I'm in a hurry! There are a few questions in there I really need answered in there, so if someone could answer them, I'd really, really appreciate it!

Much thanks.

If you order a MacBook before the iPod rebate deal ends, you can get a practically free Nano and sell it on, chipping some more off the final price you need to cough up.

Consider the long term though. As soon as new MacBook revisions are released, the value of the previous models will drop substaintially, therefore if you don't hold out, you may risk losing a couple hundred bucks when it comes to seeling next time around.

Me, I'm now applying my iPod scheme to my Macs. I've managed to keep the latest iPod model for the last 4 years by buying at the beginning of a product cycle and selling it on eBay just before the next revision. It's only cost me £50 on top of the price of the first 1G iPod. Sometimes I even made profit.

With computers, it's not so easy. I've gone from an iMac G5 to an Intel iMac at the cost of £200, and will go from this iMac to a MacBook by either braking even or paying another £150 to get a superdrive and a bigger harddrive.

Still, this means I will definately wait for the C2D, otherwise the next time I want to upgrade it'd cost me about £450 to get an equivalent model.

It's always better than buying computers in big £1000 chunks and letting it's value practically disappear over the course of a few years. If you're bothered about the introduction of new features, this saves you big bucks.

If you're not, of course, there's no point. Just buy when you need.

I am in the SAME exact boat as you are man. the same ... so I'm still trying to figure it out. because I know when Leopard comes out, I'll get it from the company I work for. So that's not a big deal. but I don't know if I can run it on a 32 bit processor. hmmm.. decisions decisions. Maybe I'll just wait and it might "cost" me the 200 bones for the iPod I was going to sell, but in all reality, why buy something that is already not the best?

As a casual user, if you feel like it's not a huge deal, then it probably isn't.

Part me wants to say, go ahead and get the macbook now. It doesn't sound like 64-bits vs. 32-bits is going to matter that much to you. Besides, there's been no guarantee from apple that they've even adopted merom for anything let alone anything other than MBP's.

The other part of me says, why not wait just a couple of more weeks and see what happens. If you absolutely must order the macbook in time to take advantage of the nano promo, then just wait until the day it expires on the 16th (the day we're also expected to hear of the C2D upgrades for MBP's and possibly MB's.) If there's still no announcement, go ahead and order your macbook and the free nano.

Take it or leave it, that's my 2 cents.

Nuks, my advice is to just buy the computer now if you need it for something like school. My dad told me he'd get me a Mac for HS graduation in May. I was just going to get it then but he told me to wait until they release Merom. I waited. And waited. Then I waited some more. School started and I wished I had my computer. I ordered it last Tuesday and it's not supposed to ship until tomorrow. So if you're getting it for school then order it at least 2 weeks before school starts. I was also thinking I'd wait because of 32-bit vs. 64-bit but I don't think it's going to matter to us(I have similiar computing habits). I would say just order it and be happy with what you get because you know it's a great computer. I for one can't wait to get mine.

Thanks everyone.

So does the nano offer mean up to AND INCLUDING the 16th? If so, then I'll just wait for the expo to wrap up, and then order the macbook. If not, I'm still debating my options. Hahah

There were ads in the Sunday flyers this weekend for HP Pavilion PCs with the Core 2 Duo processors. For example, CompUSA shows an HP Pavilion Media Center PC with the Core 2 Duo E6400. You can view it at the following link:

http://www.compusa.com/products/pro...ll&Nty=1&D=339557&Ntk=All&product_code=339557

The web site says that it's available for pickup in store in 15 minutes. Clicking Check Store Availability showed it as In Stock at 4 CompUSAs in my area.

There were also other stores advertising HP Pavilion desktop PCs with Core 2 Duo.

Besides upgrade to 64 bit what else might be new?

There have been arguments on this board about whether the user will see a difference in performance between 64 (Core 2 Duo) and 32 (Core Duo) bit chips.
However, there may be more than just a change in processor if a new Macbook Pro comes out.

What I am curious about is whether anyone has any idea about what other things might get added/upgraded for the new MBP. Will it get a bigger hard drive as standard? Or more memory (since a 64 bit processor will allow for up to 2 Terra*GB (2^64) vs 32 bit's limit of 4GB (2^32)). A better video card may be in store. What else? Anyone have some facts or well supported speculation?

Well Dell is shipping in about 9 days:

Intel® Core™ 2 Duo processor T7200 (4MB Cache/2.00GHz/667MHz FSB)
DELAY TO SHIP YOUR LAPTOP IF YOU CHOOSE THIS OPTION: 9 days

Is Apple really behind or not - who really knows???

What would really help me is KNOWING when C2D based MBPs will be shipping and the related improvements, options and prices. Like many of you, I could then make an informed decision on what to do. It would be a GREAT improvement to just know. Order today - ship by whenever - then we can decide.

iPod promotion, Mac Expo / Paris holding things up - I doubt it. Clearing inventory - the PC world appears to have sorted out a method for doing that.

I think the general consenus is the the C2D MBP's will be announced and available on the 16th. Until we get an official announcement from Apple however, who knows?

That doesn't mean that it will necessarily ship in 9 days, it means it will ship 9 days later than it would if you did not choose this option.

However, core2 duos shippin in 9 days sounds about right, so we should see the announcement for the new Mac versions next Tuesday.

(Did I say "next Tuesday"? )

I couldn't care less about the C2d's tbh ^^ I'm in it for a bigger HD, a Superdrive on the low end and *prays* a dedicated gfz card. Any will do.

ignorance is definitely bliss. this merom 64 bit machine better be worth all 4 months i've spent waiting...

I'm positive it will for me since it's my first new computer in over three years. For those who may have Yonah MBP's, probably not so much.

MB vs MBP

While we wait for the release of Apple's Merom MB/MBP, what are the advantages of MBP over MB? Obviously I want a MBP, but I don't really have that kind of cash to shell out, and of course school has to be starting soon. I'm thinking of getting the Merom MB when it is released, unless I can be convinced to wait a little bit longer without a laptop, like 2-3 months, until I can afford a MBP.
