Official Merom (Core 2 Duo) Launch on Monday?

Does anyone know if the nano promotion will go right until the end of the 16th? (11:59 PM) That way, I can wait until the 16th, and whether or not something gets announced, I can order. I'm sick of waiting, and I'd rather have 200 bucks off than wait around for another while. I'll be happy either way I'm sure.

But if it gets announced on the 16, will I be able to purchase on the 16 and still get the money off?

I'll still be waiting... but I wont be able to wait anymore when October rolls around, going too need a laptop by then.

I'll keep waiting. Not happy, but waiting. As I've said before, it's about features, not "latest and greatest." Though I will say at this point the only reason I'm watching the rumor mills is so that when something finally does happen, I can be closer to the front of the massive line. In the mean time my 400Mhz Pismo can limp along for my portable needs.

I'll wait a bit.

One thing November / December 2007, which ever iMac on the market I am snatching, if I have to wait until sometime in January 2008 for another type of iMac, so be it. I'll stick with my iMac G5, time to renew my warranty.

Now this bloody Mac Book *twiddles thumbs*

I'm picking up a stock one tomorrow with the intent of swapping it once the new ones are released. I'm not so much waiting on Merom as I am for what I see as an inevitable case redesign. Things such as the magnetic latch, backlit MacBook keyboard, easily swappable HDD, maybe anodized aluminum with color, built in eSATA port (dreaming now), and maybe something else I've not even thought of. As Multimedia has pointed out many times in this and other threads, those are the things really worth waiting for. I think they'll be worth it.

My guess is Merom will just be a straight CPU-swap on current systems, and the new case design will come along with the change-over to Santa Rosa in early 2007, given that current Meroms are pin-compatible with Yonah whereas Santa Rosa requires a change to the next revision of Merom (along with a faster FSB) -- this suggests a revision will be required anyway, esp since Santa Rosa is currently listed as consuming more power than the i945 in current systems.

Santa Rosa includes a few other upgrades and was originally proposed to come with 802.11n. I'm curious to see what will happen with this given the 802.11n specification wasn't ratified and the next draft isn't due 'til January. We could see Intel push ahead with a 'draft-n' spec -- that'd be my guess.

Wouldn't it suck if apple "thought different" and decided to wait until santa rosa to update their MBP's? I think I'm just trying to talk myself down from this high of hopes for the merom MBP--sort of like when you go to see Pirate of the Carribean 2, hoping it will be awesome, and then seeing it and realizing it sucked hard. Bad analogy, but what I'm really trying to say is... I hope we get C2D soon. :D

To be honest, I'm fine with ye olde i945 -- the faster FSB doesn't offer a great deal in real world terms (take a look at like speed Conroe vs Merom benchmarks out there... the difference is tiny for most things, with the odd bandwidth limited app gaining ~9%), 802.11n will likely still be draft, so I suspect I'd end up having to replace it anyway (I remember the draft-G equipment, practically none of which worked with final spec and only a tiny amount was upgradable to final-G compatibility) and the rest of the stuff in there doesn't set my world alight either. Couple that with higher power usage...

To me, Yonah->Merom is a much bigger deal than i945->Santa Rosa -- I want the 64bit mode (for the extra registers) and the single-cycle SSE. Depending what you do with your computer, YMMV :)

Macbook Pro is a PRO thing....its gotta have a better processor than a silly imac! but if they're gonna put c2d in an iMac i think they gotta do the same for the macbook.

The MBP will be updated in the same quiet way, the 12th is for something new.

On the 12th yeah. This really ads to the rumors that the iPod will go through a major upgrade, and the ones saying that the MacBook Pro will get a major redesign.

iPod yes, MBP no.

The 12th will be all movie related stuff. The MBP will be updated soon, but it will likely be a press release, just like this morning.

Interesting that the most that you can configure it to have is 3G of memory. Why not 4?

It would appear that it only has 3 RAM slots, and I guess they figured that offering 2x2GB would be so ridiculously expensive based on their prices that it isn't even worth offering as an option.

Does anyone think that as we have seen the Mac Mini's update was just a speed bump, that the MacBook will only see a speed bump too.

There has been a debate as to whether the MacBook will see 'merom' this year, i think that the evidence speaks for itself... ...not til next year.

Here is how i see it;

Mac Mini, MacBook White - Consumer models - Core Duo til late this year or early next

iMac, MacBook Black - Bridge between consumer and pro - Core 2 Duo (Possibly not in the BlackBook but perhaps as an option?)

Mac Pro, MacBook Pro - Pro Models - Core 2 Duo

Just my opinion... ...what does everyone else think?

It seems quite plausible to me that the regular MB's might stick with Core Duos for the time being.

Actually it looks like it still only has 2 slots and they let you do 1x2G and 1x1G... seems odd.

3GB 667 DDR2 SDRAM - 1x2GB, 1x1GB

What am I missing? This doesn't make sense to me...

I agree as well, as much as I would like to see Merom in the MB's quickly. I think (as other have mentioned) that if for no other reason than early supply limitations the MB's will be a bit longer.
