It's not Halo 3 here folks. It's SSB which I had honestly never heard of before this forum. I've met a whopping two people who have played it. Granted more will be interested in this game as more will have Wii's than Cubes....but not to any kind of media hype level. Sorry. The folks who love and follow this game will know about it's arrival despite any other media events going on. It will be their media event.

The media will not care. If it's not the grammys I'm betting they run a story about some frivolous law suit or something over this anyways. You guys need to pull out of your world and into the bigger world. Even if a console has sold 10 million and half of those buy a game...that's still less viewers/interest than ice skating competitions. And there's no Microsoft marketing dollars behind this. It doesn't matter when it comes out...geeks who follow the game know the release date and have multi page obsessive threads about it already :)

Even the "superior on every level" Orange Box collection didn't get the same media attention as Halo 3.

I'll never get that. MS must have spent a lot getting that get advertised and hyped.

You're very unusual though; I know many, many people who are FPS-nuts and bought a Wii ONLY because of the promise of Smash Bros.

And no, they're not Nintendo fanboys. In fact, a couple of them don't even play Zelda/Metroid/Mario, which makes me sad.

I'm not that weird....my life isn't typed up of contacts in video games :) Most of my friends either don't play or play WoW or something like Diablo or strategy on a PC. I've had one person over at my house that was curious about the game...but he owned a Cube and now has a Wii...I still don't even know what the gameplay is really like. I'm worried it's going to be a game like Strikers that I enjoy for a bit in my home, but can't play online because there are people with absolutely no life besides the games and will beat the crap out of me everytime :D So I'll end up playing through the story mode and occasionally when friends come over.

Well, the true replay value of the Smash Bros. series has always been, and will continue to be, local multiplayer. In fact, I'm still not convinced that online multiplayer will be all that usable without a top-notch, low latency connection.

Honestly, I don't play that many video games nowadays, but my friends and I always end up coming back to Melee. As far as video games go, I've yet to experience anything more consistently enjoyable than rounding up 5-10 people and playing Smash. It's an all-around fun game that's just plain enjoyable to play and watch with friends. I've been doing that on a semi-weekly basis for quite a while now, and each time there's always something bound to get the whole group rolling over with laughter.

Brawl has some mighty big shoes to fill! :D

No, that was the old release date, and it has come and gone. It was delayed till February...calm down.

They wouldn't be able to sell it in the Wii Shop, the game is too big to fit on the Wii's internal memory.

No way. The Wii has a tiny 512MB. I bet SSSB is on a dual layer DVD, which means the game has to be greater than 5GB

Well no updates since Friday. ;)

But I think the next week or so is the crucial time. If we don't hear anything about a delay, then I think we're gold. How many weeks ahead of time do they send the Gold copy to the printers?

Depends for each region, they'd be going off estimates of how well each region will do. So for America expect them 3-4 weeks before. We all know NoE operates in a shed somewhere in Germany so expect that inket printer and DVD burning computer to be working overtime for the next few months.

put me on the record, prediction of final release date: march 31st.

i personally think that it misses february completely, and it's likely coming in late march (after easter), but no later than april. expect an announcement in the next 10 days about it. if there's no delay announcement by jan. 15th, i doubt we'll have more delays. and i have plans for the six weeks starting around valentine's day...spring training so a delay would be welcome for me.

btw, when the game comes out, we should have it in a separate thread from this one, one where we talk about our gameplay and perhaps a league.

Good idea. Perhaps we should also arrange ahead of time which thread should have spoilers or not.

i say this one since it's the news thread, but the gameplay and league thread can have spoilers if it's relevant to the gameplay, like finishing the game with a secret character, or tips and tricks.

Nice to see more updates and that
stage21_080107d.jpg

is in the game.

That's my all time favorite stage! :)

Yea it's definitely nice seeing some of my fave levels make it back too, Rainbow Ride :D

Good to see Onett and Brinstar as well. I like the little 'we're surprised at how much content is in this game' comment...

^ ooooh yes! That sounds very good indeed! I mean I didn't care much for multiman melee on the Cube, but pfffft!

edit: oh, and Nintendo, we get the message  I think it's best now if you tell us which modes don't have online.

Fantastic! A new character!

Seems he/they will have a unique fighting style. I'm curious to see more.

I love the unusual characters like Kirby (stealing other's moves) Ice Climbers (a pair) and Pokemon Trainer (a tag-team trio) that add such variety to the game. Now, add Captain Olimar and the Pikmin to the list!

Captain Olimar? This game is made of awesome.

I want to see his stage. And that of Sonic!

Oh me oh my! Didn't expect that. Sounds like he plays a little differenly to the others too.
