Thanks for the jailbreak! Works great on my iPhone 4 running 4.0.1. First thing I did was put custom SMS sounds.
Little concerned Safari has such a bad exploit though.....

If you have SSH installed a little command line knowledge, you can plug the Safari exploit yourself. Just download this, SSH it to your phone, then run "dpkg -i com.willstrafach.pdfexploitwarner_0.0.1-4_iphoneos-arm.deb" to install it.

Warning to iPhone 4 (4.0.1) users.

This jailbreak might either reduce your signal to 1 bar or No signal.

Or "brick" your phone.

Just happened on my iPhone 4

same here..no signal, no amount of reboots or network resets brought it back, had to restore, now it works again.

Has anybody tried this? It'd be pretty slick to jailbreak using a Safari exploit and also have the fix on hand to plug it up while still allowing the jailbreak to exist on the device. Where did you get this file?

Well, seems like I was successfully able
to jailbreak my iPhone 4.

Did a full update on Cydia.

Facetime seems to be okay -- at least the
icon for it is still in place. Have not fully
tested it.

I did install Hackulous and Installous.

Two problems I notice...

First, my home screen wallpaper (the one
that appears when I slide the phone on) is
no longer there. Hopefully I can replace.

Second, all the jailbroken applications I
had in place on my 3GS that I backed up
in iTunes did not successfully transport over
to the jailbroken iPhone 4. Have to redownload
everything.

Otherwise, for the moment, it looks as
if everything works. This was the easiest
jailbreak I have ever seen.

timed out

any one successfully jailbreak this morning it tells me unable to connect to server.

Well, the old jailbreakme.com back in the 1.x days fixed the exploit after it did the jailbreak. It is a cool idea, the jailbreakers got the fix before Apple's official one ;)

The link is from the developer's Twitter account, which is here.

Cool. I'll install this on my iPod Touch and see what happens. I still am a little wary of jailbreaking my phone just yet. I think I'll wait until the post-iOS 4.1 jailbreak hits the streets, because there are several issues that I need fixes for that will likely come with that update.

does this jb wipe my phone?

Im at work and can create a backup here but my main computer at home has all my apps/songs etc.

If I jailbreak now will my phone be empty or does it leave all existing apps, songs, data etc?

Did not wipe my phone at all.

Do a backup on iTunes before performing jailbreak.

Only issues so far is my home wallpaper is gone
but I think I can reinstall.

Also, if you backed up jailbroken apps from a
previous iPhone it doesn't seem to restore those.

I am a little concerned about the Safari exploit.
Perhaps someone can explain it further and let
us know how dangerous it is.

hey, im in work so i cant look at all the pages and it takes ages to load up here.
my question is is this jailbreak for jailbreaking ios4.1?
i have an iphone 3gs that is jailbroken with spirit on 3.1.3, could i upgrade to ios4 and then jailbreak.

sorry for the stupid question but like i said im in work and cant read all the posts

Just one niggling problem re theme, or part themes (battery icons, change clock icon etc).

Installed same 4 theme parts that I used to use on my 3GS (which worked perfectly), a battery icon, a compass icon, a 3G symbol and a clock icon.

All enabled in Winterboard, but none of them appear to actaully show on the phone (yes, rebooted).

They are quite old icon replacements, and are all v1.0. Are they simply maybe not compatible with OS4? or is there something else I should be doing?

Apart from that, very, very easy JB, and kept everything intact.

Thanks.

I'm seeing the same thing. Glass Orb Color installed and works OK, but none of the little tweaks like alternate signal meters, battery icons, etc. will work. I've tried everything, and nothing appears to be being discussed online anywhere yet, as I've searched EVERYWHERE.

Pretty impressive that you're asking about 4.1. Where did you get that file?

Hmmm so I JB'd my phone and when I enter cydia the first time it gives me some cache errors saying it can't connect to pull some of the packages- then asks me to update some server software -when I do so - it then seems to work but the home screen on cydia NEVER loads and times out. Then I tried downloading dtunes and it says there's a compatibility error and wont let me.... thoughts??

No need to restore since the facetime/MMS bug is now fixed.

Well, I'm on a 3GS which doesn't have Facetime.

I guess I'm more interested in knowing if I need do anything like a factory restore before upgrading to 4.0X and then subsequent jailbreak.

E.g., would the fact that I have Categories screw things up if I updated to 4.0 (with Folders) without starting with a clean slate?

Sorry if some of this seems logical--I don't have a strong enough foundation of info on this for the 'logical' steps to become apparent. :)

Just tried to run jailbreak on the iphone 4, downloading fine then iphone rebooted and has frozen on the reboot screen (black background with apple in the middle) anyone got any ideas?

Safari-Based Jailbreak Available for iOS Devices, Including iPhone 4 and iPad

JailbreakMe, a new web-based jailbreak has been released, offering users of Apple's iOS devices, including iPhone 4 and iPad, a simple tool to open up their devices for installation of non-Apple-approved applications, customizations, and file access. Users need only visit the JailbreakMe.com site with their iOS devices and activate the "Slide to Jailbreak" switch to open up their devices.

Jailbreaking remains officially unapproved by Apple and the company warns that any device issues caused by the jailbreaking process could violate the warranty. The company also argues in a support document that jailbreaking can cause "instability, disruption of services, and compromised security." Consequently, users should proceed at their own risk, despite that fact that the jailbreaking process is easily reversible by restoring through iTunes.

Just last week, the U.S. Library of Congress issued a specific exemption to the Digital Millennium Copyright Act to allow smartphone users to jailbreak their devices without running afoul of the legislation.
