Hence the question some of us have: what?

LockScreenInfo sounds interesting/useful, but is it really so valuable that you'll give up Apple's updates & other "walled garden" benefits to achieve it? Tweaking the UI may be nice, but likewise not a big selling point. Tethering is great, but there's a reason it's blocked (wanna play in a crowded room, gotta follow the rules).

Don't get me wrong: totally open sounds great ... except for that little under-discussed issue of the costs (financial & practical). I'm seeing a lot of push for the means and not much appreciation of the ends. In the end, what's really so compelling?

I love the idea of Linux also: open, flexible, free, etc. ... but whenever I try it out (and as a SW engineer I can deal with a lot), it's just too much headache overhead to bother with given that, on the whole, paid by-the-rules systems work much better as tools for getting other jobs done.

OK, LockScreenInfo. Nifty. What else?

Fully agreed; at least I am glad these people represent less than 1% of Apple consumers, otherwise our favorite company wouldn't even be here nowadays.

Funny thing is: these JB-lovers will be the first ones to complain that Apple is not providing warranty for jailbroken devices when a BIG problem occurs.

And don't even get me started with Linux: what a horrible trainwreck in terms of UI, troubleshooting and overall software fragmentation.

For MyWi you're already paying for your data but it's a better alternative to AT&T charging you $45 for a capped data plan and tethering.

You know, there is a reason AT&T does that.

If you want to hack your iPhone and use incorrectly your AT&T data plan, then do it. But don't justify yourself by saying that AT&T is the one provoking users to do this because they don't offer cheaper solutions. Simply accept that you are doing something wrong and are violating what you signed for.

2: Whats up? You're plan to write a rubbish app and expect it to earn enough for you to retire to the Caribbean not going to plan?

My plan is to release quality applications, that supplement my income. And for the past 3 years, that has been successful. I do the work, I get the rewards.

So stealing from developers, stealing from at&t (whether you agree with paying for tethering or not doesn't give you the right to just take it without paying) and something you can already essentially do in iOS4 (multitasking). Good reasons...

Why should anyone have to pay extra for tethering? Before I bought the iPhone I had a windows mobile phone that came with an app called Internet Sharing. It allowed me to tether without having to pay anything extra. So, how fair is it that some people can tether for free but iPhone users have to pay extra? How about no?

Any else having any problems jailbreaking there iPhone 4. Im trying do this new web jailbreak and its saying oops... a server with the specified hostname could not be found. HAs been taken down already

what does it mean when all i have is a progress bar with no progress?
it's been like this for about 15 minutes

Because AT&T said so. Simple as that. It's their company and they can do as they see fit.

Why sign a contract where you know you can't tether and then complain about not being able to do it?

1) SBSetting Swipe the time on top of the screen anytime and gives you quick access to settings. Turn on/off Wifi, change brightness, restart or turn

Wow, that's some seriously ugly stuff. Is this what I'm in for when I enter the world of jailbreaking? :(

You don't think att is stealing from us? Even if technically it isn't stealing, over charging for a service(s) is the same thing, While I don't support using hackulous for free apps, tethering for free is by far one of the only reasons for me doing this..

Stealing apps from developers is wrong and it sucks and everyone knows it (or should).

But I have a real moral dilemma with AT&T. Like the above posters pointed out, how is it moral for them to charge me (exorbitantly) to access my already-paid-for data on a second device? Can you imagine if Comcast charged you for every computer in your house that shared the Internet via wi-fi or hardwired connections? A riot would ensue. Yet AT&T is able to do exactly the same thing without major protest?

There should be a class-action lawsuit over the tethering issue. One, I can't tether an iPad even if I paid for a tethering plan. I have to buy a separate data plan for the iPad. And even if I could tether the iPad, AT&T wants almost as much as for a standalone data plan for the iPad anyway just for the privilege of accessing my already-paid-for data on a second device.

Criminal.

Error message when I try and use jailbreakme.com right now.. anyone else? "A server with the specified hostname could not be found."

This is astoundingly unhelpful. I'm interested in getting first hand reports of possible downsides. All I find on teh Google and in this forum is how great it is. Before I take the plunge I want to know what I'm getting into.

I'll go ahead and be straight forward with you if you get to read my post - last night was the first time I ever jail broke my iPhone 3GS and the second time I jail broke my 2nd gen iPod Touch, and this was one of the smoothest things I have ever done...so far, so good. I have no issues with my MMS, battery life so far seems the same, and though my iPod Touch is a bit slower, it's not something I pay attention to as my iPhone is my primary device anyway.

The reality is that jail breaking is about as much of a gamble as downloading a cracked application for your PC or Mac, except of course jail breaking is now legal. They use exploits that can become security risks, it's not 100% fool proof, and there can be some initial casualities (the MMS/face time issue from last night), so so far I am finding the benefits outweighing the negatives.

Backgrounder is necessary, since I listen to iheartradio and they seem to have NO intention to update the app for iOS 4. MyWi is going to become very invaluable to me, as I can further take advantage of the 3G that I pay for on my iPad as I am out and about - I cannot do this via AT&T tethering which we all know.

I will probably find some other cool stuff as I explore this Cydia and jailbreak world, but from my experience so far, I can say that I'm glad to have jail broken my devices as of right now.

You don't think att is stealing from us?

I don't think AT&T is stealing from us.

You sign a contract, they give what they've agreed to give.
You don't like the terms, cancel or don't sign up in the first place.

Those rules are in place for a reason.
The 3G "pipe" is only so big. You want more bandwidth, you're gonna have to pay for it. This is why they cut off the $30/mo-unlimited plan: there just isn't enough room for "unlimited" usage, and the million new iPad 3G users were soaking up a lot more of that than they realized would. If they allowed tethering, 3G would choke out in minutes and then you'd be whining that they can't support what they promised.

So long as people are willing to pay for the service they get, they're not "overcharging". Supply and demand. Vote with your wallet. It's a paid service, not a human right.

Somehow I think you don't understand what "stealing" is. Go look it up. AT&T is not taking money from you at gunpoint; you're free to get network service from a dozen providers ... or none at all.

Good attitude. Only pay for things that you feel you should have to pay for, and take the rest? I mean, it's only fair, right?

Wow, when I think about it, I can justify taking just about anything!

Anyone getting this message on iPhone 4?

Are you guys updating to 4.0.1 first and then jailbreaking or are you staying on 4.0 and jailbreaking? I know it works either way but I'm trying to figure out if there's any compelling reason to do it one way vs. the other. I'm on 4.0 and wasn't planning to update to 4.0.1 before jailbreaking unless there's a good reason to do it.
