And then we'll have a choice - stay Jailbroken and live with a potentially MASSIVE vulnerability, or fix the vulnerability but lose the jailbreak.

I think you'll see those who love the jailbreak keep it and the vast majority of people update.

Here are three excellent reasons:

MyWi. Tether without having to pay AT&T any extra money per month. I can share my phones connection with other iPhones and my computers here. They simply see my phone as a WiFi connection or I connect to my computer and share my phones 3G through USB. MyWi 4.0 is for iOS 4.0.

iBlacklist. I can block any phone number. I can block any number not in my contacts and I can block all private numbers.

3G Unrestrictor. I can download any size file on 3G from iTunes and the App store. Videos play as if they were on a WiFi connection in YouTube.

Those are the three best reasons that I Jailbreak.

woah thanks, those all seem really useful.

Hence the question some of us have: what?

LockScreenInfo sounds interesting/useful, but is it really so valuable that you'll give up Apple's updates & other "walled garden" benefits to achieve it? Tweaking the UI may be nice, but likewise not a big selling point. Tethering is great, but there's a reason it's blocked (wanna play in a crowded room, gotta follow the rules).

Don't get me wrong: totally open sounds great ... except for that little under-discussed issue of the costs (financial & practical). I'm seeing a lot of push for the means and not much appreciation of the ends. In the end, what's really so compelling?

I love the idea of Linux also: open, flexible, free, etc. ... but whenever I try it out (and as a SW engineer I can deal with a lot), it's just too much headache overhead to bother with given that, on the whole, paid by-the-rules systems work much better as tools for getting other jobs done.

OK, LockScreenInfo. Nifty. What else?
Nifty, that is exactly how I would describe LockScreenInfo.

SBSettings is really the cream. I've used that more than anything else.

I'm on a 3G, so the jailbreaking enables listening to Pandora and other backgrounding. I also use the Quick Reply for SMS which is awesome when it works right.

When I get my iPhone 4, I'll jailbreak just for SBS and Quick Reply.

Winterboard Problems?

Anyone else experiencing iffy support for themes on the iPhone 4?

One of the few things that bothers me aesthetically in iOS is the lockscreen battery and I try to change it as soon as I jailbreak. When I enable a battery theme in Winterboard, though, nothing changes after the respring.

I've double-checked that the theme is in var/stash/Themes.xxxxxx and tried checking/unchecking Summerboard support in Winterboard prefs. From reading this thread and others, it seems like others are definitely able to enable themes as smoothly in iOS 4 as they could in iOS 3...

Any ideas?

Agreed, but there's more!

Once you jailbreak and install the Cydia package manager, it's like having a second "App Store", essentially. All the developers who wanted to write something for the iPhone or iPad, but didn't want to pay Apple's annual $99 fee for permission to submit things to their store, and all the developers who wrote apps they knew would get rejected due to using "off limits" functionality in the devices have a place to give away or sell their work.

Apple doesn't like it because it represents a loss of centralized control over everything people write for their products ... but IMHO, I like having the OPTION and ABILITY to install and use any of those products, if I so choose (understanding they may indeed make my iPhone/iPad more unstable or unreliable until I remove them again).

My main concern with this is unsophisticated people who use the utility features of their iPhone and jailbreak it without knowing all the ramifications, will experience issues they do not understand and have difficulty overcoming or recovering from.

Clearly the folks who well understand jailbreaking don't even need this tool as the existing pwn tools are more widely tested and recognized for features and applications it enables and such.

In short, don't just jailbreak because you heard it is possible now. It always was. It is not "cool". It is "for particular purposes" and disables some features you currently enjoy.

If you know and understand that, go for it!

If you are clueless, let Apple hold your hand. They do a good job of it and are happy to do so.

That's what I do, and I know several people who have jailbroken their iPhones. They always go back.

Rocketman

1) SBSetting Swipe the time on top of the screen anytime and gives you quick access to settings. Turn on/off Wifi, change brightness, restart or turn

2) Backgrounder, true backgrounding, the app will run in the background by holding down the home button.

whats the point people when everybody is getting error messages and stuff??? whats the point of doing it right now???

Good news for those who need/want it, but as someone who only used JB'ing on my iPhone 3G to get themes/wallpapers, etc I have no need to JB.

My iPhone 4 is carrier unlocked by default by Apple, and I have home/lockscreen wallpapers, plus all the features of iOS4 that I had to JB my 3G to enable.

It allows you to Customise everything on the phone, it allows installation of 3rd party apps that are not on the apple store and it allows you to install cracked versions of all the apps and games from Apples App Store without paying a penny for them.

Thanks for stealing asshat.

Really cant be arsed with this. This is why I own a mac / iphone because I dont have to mess about with it. Turn on, do task, turn off, go. simple.

Spose there will always be people who want to mess. Just really dont see the point.

Heh...enjoy the 'Blockbuster Video' app that the carrier puts on your Android phone that you can't remove. That's what being "open" is all about, apparently.

Enjoy the garbage "YouTube" app that Apple puts on your iPhone that you can't remove and loads video slower than molasses (and the m.youtube.com site). That's what being "curated" is all about, apparently.

Same goes for the weather app that can't even display the current temp on the icon after how many OS revisions?

Works both ways.

So just because I'm careful with my technology stuff and I haven't done it before, what are the negative effects of jailbreaking (if any)?

If you have to can you un-jailbreak the phone by restoring factory setting?
Can you still use the app store and everything else just like a regular iPhone?
Is the jailbreak remotely detectable?
Are there any downsides that anyone can think of?

If you have never jailbroken your iphone before, then you will love it. It comes with a web broswer which you can use to read this same thread and finad the answers posted many times already.
Also it has a website called "google" where you can look up all the answers yourself.

If you haven't jailbroken before then you will never find out the answers to your questions.

I had to restore my 4. My carrier just said searching and could no longer get a cell signal. Why??

Just noticed that my iPhone 3GS is sending/receiving big amounts of unknown data over 3G after using this jailbreak.. (gsm noise through my speakers all the time).. How do I restore without having to reinstall/repurchase all my apps etc?

Those are 3 good reasons, thank you!

I'm a bit surprised by some of the comments left by people saying they support piracy or that you jail break for phone to get apps for free that you would normally have to pay for. I wonder if these same people also support shoplifting, purse snatching or burglary?

That's my reasoning. The only thing I want is background tasks on my iPad but they're coming soon enough so I'm not worried about it.

I have an original iphone and iphone 3GS that are sitting on my desk doing nothing. I use an iphone4. I have been thinking about selling the others on ebay and you get more if you Jailbreak first. Is that a good enough reason to Jailbreak for you. I would never try to Jailbreak on my phone that I use everyday, but with my extras...

Hmm.

Jailbroken 3G here, no pirated apps. In fact I've paid for 2 third party hacks. If the human race depended on people like you, we'd still be living in caves eating leaves.

In the caves, when eating leaves, piracy wouldn't be an issue. In fact, it wasn't for most societies until fairly recently.

In the middle ages, there were issues with printers trying to copy others' work. But in the end, using unlicensed intellectual property spread more knowledge around the world than we give credit for.

We wouldn't be in the caves if people found piracy appealing. In fact, millions of people steal intellectual property on a daily basis and we manage somehow. Even if we take your suggestion to the extreme, it would just mean a slightly different civilisation. But we don't have the capacity or the foresight to see, exactly how it would have changed the world, if intellectual property was free and easy to distribute.
