Really cant be arsed with this. This is why I own a mac / iphone because I dont have to mess about with it. Turn on, do task, turn off, go. simple.

Spose there will always be people who want to mess. Just really dont see the point.

If you don't understand the benefits, then of course you don't see the point.

my unacquainted friend, i do not buy carrier subsidized phones. i pay in full and buy "unbranded" phones. that's freedom. thank you.

and by quoting me you are saying ... ?? you don't like that i've said apples are restrictive? does that hurt your feelings sir? i humbly apologize.

One of the primary reasons Apple chooses to place restrictions on their devices is to protect the developers. I'm perfectly fine with jailbreaking, but as this practice becomes more mainstream, piracy may also accompany that. Think about it for a moment, why would developers continue to produce applications knowing full well their work would be pirated? This is of course why we'll in no doubt see an update from apple in the days to come.

That's great you purchase non subsidized phones for the unlocking benefits and non contractual obligations. But your condescending attitude makes me think your definition of freedom means having money flying out of your extremities.

In my eyes this is great I'm not too big of a fan of jailbreaking at this pound because the things I wanted are slowly comming available through apple but there is still a couple things I might jailbreak for. One is definatly mifi, second sb settings, and last is 3G unrestrictor (for face time). If apple had these things I would never jailbreak but when I get home I'll probably do it I'm out so if somthing goes wrong I can't restore so good day :)

It won't work. Odds are Apple has already closed the PDF exploit in the next update.

Please don't get offended. I trust you.

I just want to clear it in my mind.

I have the current latest software 4.0.1 that I downloaded and upgraded via Itunes. What is different in my phone than someone's non-developer phone since we did the same upgrade?

Thanks!

With an iPhone that isn't activated you can't get to any usable part of the OS. This is why hacktivation is so nice.

agreed, i was more so saying that a phone that is not activated from the time of purchase is not a brick, it CAN be used. one way or another, without ATT

I use installous, but i do pay for some apps, especially if they are apps i use daily because you don't receive updates when an item needs to be updated you have to manually check and update it yourself.

I've spent over $100 in apps, not including Slacker Radio which i just spent $20 for 4 months for the Slacker Plus.

In the caves, when eating leaves, piracy wouldn't be an issue. In fact, it wasn't for most societies until fairly recently.

In the middle ages, there were issues with printers trying to copy others' work. But in the end, using unlicensed intellectual property spread more knowledge around the world than we give credit for.

We wouldn't be in the caves if people found piracy appealing. In fact, millions of people steal intellectual property on a daily basis and we manage somehow. Even if we take your suggestion to the extreme, it would just mean a slightly different civilisation. But we don't have the capacity or the foresight to see, exactly how it would have changed the world, if intellectual property was free and easy to distribute.
I always notice people who defend piracy just seem to skip over the millions of people who don't pirate. But yeah, yeah, you're right. We'd all be hunky-dory. I agree.

Hmm.

Jailbroken 3G here, no pirated apps. In fact I've paid for 2 third party hacks. If the human race depended on people like you, we'd still be living in caves eating leaves. I sleep like a baby and although it can get pretty lonely up here on the moral high ground, the view is fantastic.

Fixed that for you.

I will be using this to test programs on my iPad before i Re-Up my developer license.

Just backed up my iPad,

So if I do this and it cocks up my iPad I just plug it back into my iMac and hit restore in iTunes.... Is thar about right.

Wanna be sure that's all.

Yay, freedom to pay full price for a phone just to pay full price for a carrier data plan anyway (just like me) and kiss the carrier subsidy ($400) goodbye. Me, I'll take the subsidy if I'm going to be stuck with data plan charges anyway.

The carriers love you.

If you have never jailbroken your iphone before, then you will love it. It comes with a web broswer which you can use to read this same thread and finad the answers posted many times already.
Also it has a website called "google" where you can look up all the answers yourself.

If you haven't jailbroken before then you will never find out the answers to your questions.

This is astoundingly unhelpful. I'm interested in getting first hand reports of possible downsides. All I find on teh Google and in this forum is how great it is. Before I take the plunge I want to know what I'm getting into.

ok so i wanna update my iphone 3gs 3.1.3 with spirit jailbreak to the newest firmware and use this new star jailbreak to jailbreak it.
how do i go about doing this?

i have downloaded the new firmware.
is it just a case of updating it to the new firmware via itunes and then opening safari and go to the website to do the new jailbreak or do i need to wipe spirit off of it first before i update the firmware?

Both of us...

I have jailbroken my phone many times, I would always change it back after the loss of performance.

So stealing from developers, stealing from at&t (whether you agree with paying for tethering or not doesn't give you the right to just take it without paying) and something you can already essentially do in iOS4 (multitasking). Good reasons...

For MyWi you're already paying for your data but it's a better alternative to AT&T charging you $45 for a capped data plan and tethering.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't this VERY VERY bad?

Aren't we one step away from someone else being able to Jailbreak your phone against your will just by tricking you with a fake phishing website?

Could they perhap JB your phone and start doing who-knows-what and stealing your info before you really know what's going on?

I support the right of others to Jailbreak their own phones, but this sounds like a totally different direction to me.

I guess then we count our lucky stars, and are thankful that there are some seriously gifted minds in the jailbreak community who aren't out to F us.

Yeah they found a pretty serious exploit, but its not the first time JB has taken place through safari and I'm glad these guys are helping us and not trying to screw us because we might all be in a little trouble....

So we should steal stuff, drain our batteries extra quick and make our phone lag like crazy (I'm talking about the 3G because 3GS and 4 have multitasking)? That sounds very important to as why we should NOT jailbreak.

I personally don't do it because it's just like a Hackintosh. You have to worry about future updates and whether you can apply them. There's security concerns, stability concerns. I don't really need anything that a jailbreak offers. A jailbreak would offer slower performance on any device. No thanks. I didn't just buy a iPhone 4 with a fast processor just to slow it back down. So people like Hackintoshes because they like to tinker or customize things. I don't because it's a waste of time. You sacrifice too much to get what you get with jailbreaking, especially if you have a 3GS or 4. Time = money.

I haven't noticed a performance decrease.. I just need it for MyFi... I don't believe in one person paying for more than one data connection.

You don't think att is stealing from us? Even if technically it isn't stealing, over charging for a service(s) is the same thing, While I don't support using hackulous for free apps, tethering for free is by far one of the only reasons for me doing this..

Agreed. I'm pretty happy with a stock iPhone, but MyWi and some new text sounds are all I needed to make me very happy.

Yes, because no one outside the jailbreak community knows of this very serious vulnerability and so it would never get used for nefarious deeds.

I'd avoid browsing the web on my iOS device for a while if I were you.

Enjoy the garbage "YouTube" app that Apple puts on your iPhone that you can't remove and loads video slower than molasses (and the m.youtube.com site). That's what being "curated" is all about, apparently.

Same goes for the weather app that can't even display the current temp on the icon after how many OS revisions?

Works both ways.

No, it doesn't. The Apple apps that you can't remove are just that...APPLE APPS. They're not 3rd party crapware. With some of the Android phones it's like stepping back in time to the 90's when AOL and Earthlink and a free trial version of blah blah blah that's installed into your system that takes an act of god to remove sometimes.

Seriously, I wouldn't mind the 3rd party apps that some Android phones have, but at least make them deletable. Also, why can these Android phone makers just give us plain, vanilla Android 2.2. I don't want fricken Sense or Blur or whatever crapware that Motorola or HTC slapped on there to make my life easier. Just give me the basic OS and get the hell out of my way.
