Major frustration here, too. My cheek just hung up on a callback from my doctor.

So, I called Apple to vent. Tech Support has been told to tell us that the fix will be the end of the month. I'm going back to the Apple Store to exchange it again, hoping for one that works.

I asked if the Beta had the fix and he said that all it had was software for developers and no proximity sensor fix was included in their version. He said that the proximity sensor fix was being tested and they were working around the clock. I volunteered to test their fix and was refused. ;)

No flaming, please, I don't make the news, I just report it.

Well I never put my faith in what Apple stores/tech support says. Its been said here many times they don't really know anything more than we do.

My is being 'diagnosed'. This is the status on the apple's support page. It has been that way for the last 3 days. I'm without a phone now. I wish I had a spare phone that takes micro-sim. I called them and they don't really know how it's being diagnosed, or when they'll fix it. I'm not convinced that a fix is even possible, especially after reading all these posts...

I haven't read through this entire thread, however I don't seem to have the proximity issue on my iphone 4.. which I find weird. I've tried to replicate it but I have to move my phone pretty far away from my head to get the screen to turn on.

I"m actually afraid this "update" is going to make my phone's screen not want to turn on at all after a call if they end up beefing up sensitivity.

The status was just updated on apple's site. They cannot duplicate the issue. Must be the shape of my head that's causing proximity sensor issues. I will be selling my iPhone 4 on ebay, and going back to a dumb phone, since most dumb phones can make a call.

Omg, I am relieved to see that so many people are having the same issue as me. I keep dialling random numbers with my cheek, it's driving me mental!

I refuse to believe that it's the "shape of your head" or anyone else's. I NEVER had this issue with my 3GS, and it was rampant with my 4. SO bad that I actually returned it and went back to my 3GS with a micro-sim adapter. I actually just bought another 4 and this one seem to be a lot better, but I have only had it for about 20 mins. IMO, this is a HARDWARE problem, not a software problem (although they are likely looking to mitigate the issue with software). I will exchange this one one more time if it acts up, after that I'm sticking with my 3GS. BTW, sone have said that they were able to fox the problem with an exchange. Anyone care to chime in if you have had any luck?

I'm number 2 iPhone and its still there... first phone was week 24 and this one is week 26.

If 4.1 doesn't fix my issue they are gonna get a returned every other day till they give me one without this issue. I have gone way to long with this issue.... I FRIGGIN HATE APPLE for putting all of us through this and just sitting there twittling there dumb ass thumbs and waiting so long on a supposed fix.

Agree with you 100%. The fact that some people have the problem and others don't should tell you that it can't be a software issue, otherwise we'd all have the problem. My week 30 has no proximity issue and I've read quite a few other people with week 30 phones say the same.

I'm assuming this is why apple hasn't changed it in the beta's coming out lately. You fix the glitchy hardware, you end up breaking the good hardware in the process by over-sensitizing it.

I've got a week 30 with the issue. 32 GB model.

Ok guys I think I found the issue

Auto-brightness

After disabling this feature, I wasn't able to duplicate the issue at all, but re-enabling it allowed me to duplicate the problem.

Can someone try to verify this for me?

Just tried it and it didn't make any difference. I have a week 30 and this problem is really frustrating. I can barely use this as a phone.

If true, that would explain why I don't have the issue since I turned that off on day 1..

I've just tried the 'Auto Brightness' setting and I have to admit, I think it has made a difference. Tried it on and off for around five minutes and it definitely seems less sensitive when switched off.

Hope I'm not imagining this purely because I very nearly returned my first Apple product yesterday as a result of this, and would hate to admit that even Apple screw up!!!!!

I've turned auto brightness off since day one and have had the WORST experience possible with mine.

It has nothing to do with the auto brightness setting and really I dont think it has crap to do with the software either... I just cant wait till 4.1 releases and there is no fix so I can return this second phone for a third and hopefully get one without this issue... if no I'll go for a 4th 5th 6th 7th 8th ... I will go through tons of there phones till they give me a phone that works correctly.

My goodness.... when do you toss in the towel? I want thru 3 replacements until I finally returned it for a refund. By the time you're on your 8th, the IP5 will be announced.

I waited as long as I could for Apple to fix the proximity sensor issue. The 30 day mark arrived - and with no software fix, and generally, nothing said about a fix coming - I ditched the IP4.

Back to the original (launch) iPhone.... man, this screen is painful to look at now - but the fact it actually works as a phone (I don't have to hold it in a "special way" to maintain signal), and I don't randomly press keys during a conversation, makes the screen that much more bearable....

I'll have to wait, and remember what could have been, until IP4.1 or IP5 comes out....

I received a brand new iphone yesterday from AT&T and on my first call, I hung up about 4 times with my cheek. Not a good sign.

Welcome To The Club!!! :D

Dont do to much with your phone cause I have a feeling after 4.1 releases and there is no fix we will all be either returning our phones or exchanging them multiple times till we get one that works correctly.

After making the switch back to the 3GS and installing ios 4.0 I'm very happy. Only miss the battery life. The screen is not near as nice but easy choice between making calls and screen....

I've got the [proximity issue big time. Tried the reset network settings idea and the clean install..no go. Will try turning off auto brightness next. There had better be a software fix in 4.1...

Why would you do that? Get an Android or Blackberry, either are preferable to going back to a "dumb phone" as you say.

I don't have to touch my iP4 in any special places to maintain signal. I use it as I would a normal phone in high and low signal areas without any issues. I also don't have any proximity sensor issues as long as I don't wiggle or move the phone around while I'm talking. If you are having issues, until Apple issues a fix you can simply hit the lock button after you answer or initiate a call. That solves the problem. The fix is coming in 4.1 and I've read several posts claiming the fix is included in the next update.

Thats about my daily log as well.... I use for work as well (they pay half my bill) and let me telly ou what if you are using a phone for business "DO NOT" buy this piece of crap!!!

I could not disagree with you more. I'm a Realtor® and use this phone for business on a daily basis. The iP4 and the 3GS before it have replaced everything my Blackberry every did, and more. The proximity sensor is very sensitive to movement, so if you wiggle the phone or move it during your conversation you will have issues. This is something that will be fixed in software quite easily. In the meantime, just hit the lock button on top when in a phone call to avoid the issue.

No device is perfect. I suppose if you want perfection we should all return our iPhones and go for Android, right? NOT!

Hey guys,

Clearly this is a MAJOR issue, mine is actually fine, It operates the same as my 3g as soon as it's near my face it turns the screen off, I don't know why so many units are effectd and some not?

How do I find the week build of mine?

Is it possible it was a bad batch of prox sensors?

It's far more likely that the software running the sensor is a little too sensitive with regards to how people hold their phones. Not all of us hold the phones up to our ears and face the same way. Indeed, there is a huge variance in how people answer calls as well. Do you bring the phone up to the side of the face right away, or do you place the speaker on your ear and then bring the phone down to your face? There are a tremendous number of variables here for the sensor/software combo to deal with. This is a new sensor design and just a little too sensitive. It will be fixed.
