well, when I first posted in this thread, I only had this problem happened for twice or three times in total, but after posting, everyday..... this is spooky...

my bf doesn't have the same problem with his iphone4 and we ordered them together (should be the same batch). He keeps telling me to push the top button to lock the screen while speaking and I keep forgetting. I still think iPhone, being a phone, really should not require users to take extra steps to make a normal phone call... I haven't taken it back, since ppl here are saying that the exchanged phones still have the same problem. I somehow don't even believe that it's just a problem on some of the phones out there.

I think it has more to do with the users' phone-holding habit and which page the screen is on while it automatically turns off, but again, iPhone really should guarantee that at least the phone function works just as well or better than a dumbphone... I don't even mind the signal loss since it's a easy fix, but it's ridiculous for a phone to be so frustrating...

But i don't know if it's a common flaw of all smartphones or what.. i just mentioned it to a friend using Droid. She said she had the same problem... so am I asking for too much since I love everything else about the iPhone 4?

I have a Droid, along with my iPhone 4. I have the proximity sensor issue on both phones. I've managed to use the work around and maintain calls, but what a PIA:(

call me crazy, but now i can't reproduce the problem.... i have all the latest updates, and the only difference is that i got a new Power Support anti-glare screen protector.

i dont have problem with mine...week 30..came with 4.0.1..works very good:)

Likewise mine purchased last weekend wk30 has no prox issue, but I don't think any changes have necessarily been made for that week, rather the fact many IP4's just don't have the issue.

My experience was the same for the last week until I installed 4.02 last night. Today I have constant call problems....Maybe a coincidence but very strange.

I've had my phone since launch day and I actually just had this happen to me for the first time about 10 minutes ago. I was on a call and heard a "pressed button" tone and looked out of the corner of my eye and could see that the display was still lit. I held it away from my face for a bit until the call was done. I had a call a few minutes later and it didn't happen. Weird.

I think lots of people who think their phone is fine will eventually have a similar discovery. It just does not happen all the time even if you hold the phoen the same way, which gives me a little hope that it can be adjustable or corrected/fixed with software and is not soley a hardware issue. We'll see.

I did not have the proximity issue problem for the first 10 or so days I have had my phone. Today I had it twice. Never had it with my 3G.

I do not think that automagically I am holding my phone differently (perhaps I am) to my ear so something is at work here. Hard to think that this can be fixed completely via software as I assume this is a hardware issue.

I was going to upgrade my 3GS to a 4, but after reading this thread, I don't know anymore. Is the proximity issue really that bad? Worth staying with the 3GS over jumping to the 4?

Very very hard to say. You may never be afflicted by it and perhaps you may. The problem that you and I both have is that being in Canada we have the 15 days/30 minutes return policy which is next to useless. In the US it is 30 days which is great. Essentially, you may not find out within the first 30 minutes of using it that you have the problem and then it is too late.

Just got my iPhone 4, I called few times to check sensor and all works fine and I guess that everything is fine with it. Also tried deathmetalowych grip and it really occurs, but it is not annoying, sometimes it drops one or two barw but no more and I did not noticed any quality lose when talking or surfing web.
If every iPhone 4 works like mine (talking about death grip) I do not understand those complains..

I was wondering about this! It seems that outside in sunny days it happens more. I was thinking that the glass was somehow reflecting into the sensor and hence activating the screen

Anyone else using the PS anti-glare protector? What are your experiences?

I think you are on to something here, I've never had a problem until earlier I was on the phone with my friend and my cheek is constantly dialing numbers or muting. Oh yea I was out in open daylight..so maybe is possible?

My week 30 seems much better

Got a week 30 iPhone 4 (my second replacement)
Both prior iPhones had bad prox sensor issues. I tried every fix from resetting settings to restoring as a new phone, etc... nothing worked.

I've had this one for 2 weeks now. While not perfect, it is at least 80% improved with far far less cheek-dialing.

I don't know what the difference is- the iOS was 4.0.1 on all of the phones. But if you are having problems, change out to a week 30 or newer.... it may improve things for you.

IMO, it can be easily fixed with a software upgrade. A lot of people say to "make it more sensitive" which would only make it worse.

Seems the most logical thing would be to make the delay longer. So if it detects that your face "may" be too far away from the sensor ...adjust it to a few more tenth's of a second "just to be sure" it was really away from your face. It wouldn't change the behavior of the sensor so much that the user would notice.

Call me crazy though

Iwould not say it is crazy. Makes a lot of sense. However, I have read bits and pieces about 4.1 beta 3 testing and not much on the sensor issue being fixed.

It better be cause I am patiently waiting for the "Next Software Update" that dumb ass jobs said... and when it arrives and has not fixed the issue I'm sure there will be a HUGE return / exchange rate after this happens.

I updated to the newest iP4 firmware last night. Tonight, I made a call to place a pick-up order for dinner. The prox-sensor activated the screen while I held the phone up to my ear. Four times in a 5 minute call the phone either went on/off speaker or tried to initiate a face-time session. GRRRRRRRRRRR !!!!!!!

i really hate to always leave msgs in this thread, and I never thought this issue was so bad because it only happened to me occasionally before, but in these few days it's been crazy and I've done nothing different and have not updated the software... Today when i was making a phone call at home, sitting quite still, my face somehow found the ringtune setting page and started playing my ringtunes while i was talking... crazy crAZY CRAZY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have a feeling Alot (hopefully not though) of iPhone 4 users who always seem ti chime in say"Mine Works fine and has no PS issue" will eventually see this happen to them. Most people dont use there phone the way others do, and I have seen multiple people in this thread say they thought they didnt have the issue bull all the sudden today........

I've said it a hundred times and I'll say it again... release this damn 4.1 so I can have my phone fixed or I can replace it a hundred times till I finally get one that works perfect!

Driving me nuts too. I'm going to the apple store tomorrow see what they say but I doubt a replacement will help since this is my second iPhone 4. First one was terrible aswell. Thing is what if there's no fix?? I'm now locked in a contract with a faulty phone. Return date is past. What are apple/o2 going to do about this ?

THIS is what I'm wondering, I already returned (instead of exchanged) my first 4 so that I wouldn't get locked in. What happens if we get locked in and the software update never materializes (I still think this is primarily a hardware issue). I just put $20 worth of skins on my phone, but I refuse to get locked in and will return it (likely for good) if there isn't a software fix by the time my 30 days is up.

I just got mine Thursday I was waiting as long as I did would be to my advantage. I have a appt with Apple today I have proximity issues driving me crazy. Signal is not as good or steady compared to my 3GS and a weaker wifi

Has anyone got there contract cancelled after the return date because of this issue ???

I've been having the same issues with my new iPhone 4. I just got off the phone with AppleCare, they created a ticket. He said they are working on a software update that will help/fix the issues. He did say it is only a small percent on iPhones doing it.

I mainly called so they could have another reported case of it, maybe to motivate a speeder fix...
