I could not disagree with you more. I'm a Realtor® and use this phone for business on a daily basis. The iP4 and the 3GS before it have replaced everything my Blackberry every did, and more. The proximity sensor is very sensitive to movement, so if you wiggle the phone or move it during your conversation you will have issues. This is something that will be fixed in software quite easily. In the meantime, just hit the lock button on top when in a phone call to avoid the issue.

No device is perfect. I suppose if you want perfection we should all return our iPhones and go for Android, right? NOT!

Ummmm so you have to have your hand PERFECTLY STILL to stay talking :p

Everyone moves a little when they talk, this is the weirdest reply I have seen about this issue so far.

I haven't had the problem over the last weekend when I went out of town. The previous trip, I hung up and dialed another number 2 or 3 times. So seems somewhat random.

Why would you do that? Get an Android or Blackberry, either are preferable to going back to a "dumb phone" as you say.

I prefer iPod touch + a dumb phone. I don't plan on paying for data plan on Blackberry. Android market is still in it's infancy, I'm not convinced it's the best way for me. I like the way iPhone/iPod touch integrates with my Mac, using Elgato TV to rip TV shows to iPhone, etc. iPhone as a video player device & gaming device is nice. It's just not a good phone. They missed the boat on the phone part.

So I'll go back to iPod touch + Nokia 6301 or 6500. I had both of these phones, and they're solid.

I made a similar comment to a friend the other day. I like everything about the iPhone except for the phone, and I do miss my dumbphone... the straightforwardness is much appreciated now.

Every time when I need to key in some numbers in the automatic phone routing systems, I have to hope for the keyboard to wake up from the black screen but sometimes the switch doesn't work automatically so i have to press around and would accidentally press on a number that I did not intend to enter, then i have to wait to reenter... in the mean time the screen would black out again and I can only hope that the screen would wake up right...

it's just not right...

Had this happen to me 1-2 times int the last 2 weeks. last week I went out of town on business and had this happen atleast once a day while I was on the phone with important customers and colleagues. got back on Friday, made an appointment on saturday, went in and they replaced it in 5 min. said that it is a known issue and that it will be fixed with software but since there is no word on when that will be he will just give me a new one. Only problem is that after I got home I noticed a dark, dead pixel in the middle of the screen. WTF, nothing ever goes right for me.

Azero - I didn't wait for a software fix - because I don't feel it's a software problem.

If it were - wouldn't everyone who owns an IP4 have this issue? It's only present on "a few" units.

I feel the fact that I paid cash (700USD) out of pocket for this added to the sting I felt when I experienced the antenna problem, proximity sensor issue, and people telling me I sound like I'm on speakerphone - was a bit much, considering my old phone never got those complaints.

Do not be mistaken, I loved everything else about the IP4 - which is why I held on for 30 days in hopes of a direct answer and/or fix - but I feel (my opinion folks) that Apple didn't handle this the way they should have. I actually felt insulted by their "Antennagate" response.

The final nail in the coffin was when I updated the OS - and I went from having full signal at my house (I knew it was never full - but still) to NO SERVICE (it won't see / connect to the carrier) - while my launch iPhone has about 60% in the same location.

Proximity sensor is something that can be easily adjusted in software. Even if only some iphones have the issue, the software fix shouldn't hurt the "okay" ones while still fixing the "bad" ones. Personally, I do think the issue is on every iphone, but some people trigger the issue more easily than others (for a variety of factors like how one holds the phone, one's ear's shape, etc..). My dad has no problems with the proximity sensor on either of our phones (we switched for a few days) but I had issues with it on both.

it happened to me again just now - my speaker turned on all of a sudden when i was talking on the phone. Is my face too big or something??? I just feel like bumping this post up. It's unacceptable.

Have you opened a trouble ticket to apple? You need to if you want them to fix this.

I have already replaced my phone once for this issue so apple knows my problems and the second one is just as bad. cant do anything till 4.1 comes out and this is not fixed... then I can exchange it at the apple store... cause all they will tell me know is.... the future software update will fix that..... YA RIGHT ... hard to fix a piece of hardware with software!

I am SOOOOO pissed this damn firmware is not out yet!!!:mad::mad::mad::mad:

I really do not think this is just a hardware problem, it is apparent to me that the problem is caused by the way you hold the phone combined with physical attributes. Now I am not saying their is nothing wrong as their obviously is, but I would be interested to know if anyone who has experienced the problem and had their phone replaced has had the problem completely fixed. It seems from tjis thread that replacing the phone does not resolve the issue and most still have the problem which indicates that either you are unlucky and have had different phone with another defective sensor or that the sensitivity is still the issue and it can be fixed with a software upgrade.

I never had an issue with my 3G or 3GS but I do experience the problem with my IP4. I find it worse when I am talking as I walk which obviously creates more movement, but I have had it happen when I have been sitting down, but not as often.

We can speculate that their are different types of sensors and it is pot luck whether you get a good or a bad but until I hear of someone who has had a fix with a different phone I am going with the software theory and hope a fix comes soon.

will the apple store give me a replacement phone if I have the proximity issue? I have a genius bar appointment, but don't want to waste my time if they are just going to send me away telling me to wait for the software update....

Apple sure are taking their time issuing this fix, guess it's harder to produce than they initially thought.

Early on they replaced my first (purchased on debut day) iPhone 4 and the replacement was just as bad with regards to proximity, along with a couple of other added problems. So I returned the second one for a full refund and went back to a phone that actually works, my old 3GS.

But again, that was many weeks ago. More recently I was in for an appointment at an Apple Store (defective new MacBook Pro - also replaced - good grief). I was back near the counter the whole time and overheard a variety of conversations as iPhone 4 customers spoke with geniuses about their issues, of course including the proximity thing. At this particular store at least, I heard people being told that exchanging won't solve the problem and that a software fix would hopefully be coming soon. Lets just say that not everyone was happy with how things were playing out.

This may or may not answer your question as things are likely to vary from store to store and employee to employee, so all you can do is go in, tell your story and then see if what's offered suits you.

As an aside, reading these threads it's clear that some of you are more than willing to waste time exchanging iPhone after iPhone in the hopes of finding that magical one, or perhaps in the belief that it's sending some sort of message. Well, believe you me, there comes a point in everyone's life where time is revealed to indeed be precious. ;)

I've had my phone since launch day and I actually just had this happen to me for the first time about 10 minutes ago. I was on a call and heard a "pressed button" tone and looked out of the corner of my eye and could see that the display was still lit. I held it away from my face for a bit until the call was done. I had a call a few minutes later and it didn't happen. Weird.

proximity

im now awaiting for my 4th iphone 4, ive had proximity sensor probs all the way however my new phone which is only 2 days old has a new problem ie when making or receiving calls nobody can hear me. i agree the fact the proximity sensor issue has never been advertised even though its obviously a common fault.

if they are replacing your phone, have you had to wait for them to order one for you? they still don't have them in stock at the stores?

I shot this E-mail to Steve Jobs this AM:

Steve,

You promised the proximity sensor fix in the next update. 4.0.2 is here, no fix for the proximity sensor bug. I'm getting concerned that the rumors are true, and that it's a hardware bug that can't be fixed in firmware. Please reassure me.

Here's his reply:

Software update addressing this issue coming soon.

Mark

Why can't they just make sure that these ridiculous issues are not present in the first place? Pre-launch product testing appears to have completely disappeared from Apple Inc's activity.

Talk this way not that way :)

I find it sadly humorous that the defect I opened yesterday (8/11) titled 'Proximity Sensor doesn't work on iPhone 4' was not immediately classified as a duplicate and today I get the standard request for log files to support my description of the error.

Left hand, let me introduce you to Right hand...

So it took them 3-4 weeks to correct a formula for the bars ... A few more weeks for the PDF patch .. And still no proximity sensor fix ... It sounds to me that post launch it's a completely separate support team

It really is ridiculous. I'm not sure what the reason was to change/move the proximity sensor but it better have been a good one. I was on the phone with my girlfriend last night and I accidentally hit mute with my ear and she thought I hung up on her and I was sitting there saying "hello hello" like an idiot.

I guess the motto for the iP4 design team was "If it ain't broke, brake it."

It sounds to me that they don't have a clue how to resolve this issue with a software update and they are dragging there feet cause they know its a hardware issue and are trying to figure out what the hell to do when they release the supposed fix and its not fixed cause hundreds if not thousands of iPhone 4's will be taken back to apple for replacement of a newer and hopefully fixed model.

I havent heard about the proximity sensor issue in the mass media (times, wsj, etc) so unless their is a big hoopla, its pretty obvious apple doesnt consider it a major problem and will take their time fixing it if they even do that.
