I haven't had a problem with this on my iPhone 4 but I seemed to always hit speaker or accidentally end a call on my old 3G.

Don't just complain on Macrumors, take 10 seconds to notify APPLE online!

For those having proximity sensor problems on iPhone 4, please take 10 seconds to tell Apple. If they don't hear, they won't fix (they aren't reading the forums here- so complaining here does no good.)

Tell Apple here:

If you sign up for a free developer account, or are already a developer, you can also tell apple here (and they probably take these complaints more seriously)

So Apple gave a press release about the signal strength issue, great, big deal, I've got a bumper on my phone for protection, planned on having it there since day one anyhow, so its not really an issue for me..

My biggest frustration, that wasn't even addressed in their press release, is this damn proximity sensor. I'm hanging up the phone with my cheek, dialing numbers, adding contacts, starting facetime, muting the conversation.. IT IS NOT ACCEPTABLE. If I even move the phone SLIGHTLY while talking, the screen lights up and I start pushing buttons with my face..

At first I thought maybe I was just holding it against my face differently, but after having used it for a solid week now for regular phone calls, this has happened to me WAY too many times.

I certainly hope this new software update will boost the proximity sensor through software changes or whatever they need to do to make it work RIGHT, becuase if it's a hardware issue, or an issue of where it's located now, (moved slighly from the previous models) then I'm going to be extremely disappointed with my phone as a phone..

I want it to work the way it always did..

I have to hold mine a couple of inches from my face to get the display to come back. If it's coming on while you have the phone to your ear, it's a faulty phone. If the sensor is not functioning correctly and you can easily demonstrate it at an Apple store, they should replace the phone with no problem. Next!

i took my phone to an apple store today with my sensor...and the guy who tested it also tested his own iphone and he said mine was glitchy...and he said he would replace my phone, which they didn't have in stock...and then when he was asking another guy about paperwork for the phone the guy told him that it was a software problem and apple would be releasing a patch soon and he told me that even his phone did this, and i explained to him that mine was different and would prefer that they replace my phone, they said ok and took my number and will call me when they get one in.

does anyone know if the phones they are using are refurbs or are they new?

I was told replacement iPhone4's are all new at the moment!

Holy crap, an iPhone issue that's not affecting me! Now I can be one of those painfully self-centered, self-righteous know-nothings who refuse to believe anyone about anything because it didn't happen to them! Woo hoo!!! :D

Been having the same issue, gonna go into the store to get it replaced today. If they won't, then I am returning the phone and going to verizon.

I hold the phone flat against my ear (your face cant hear :p) but I leave the center part of the speaker dead center even with the center of my ear which where the Proximity Sensor is located is literally in my ear and Fully covered and every few seconds out of the corner of my eye I can see it come on and off on and off.... IT DRIVES ME :mad::mad::mad::mad:

Exact same thing for me. I called apple a week ago, got a case number going. Called them back today to let apple know that a restore didn't fix the problem, and was told a new iphone will be shipped to me as soon as its available.

I went into the Apple Store yesterday to have them look at my phone and proximity sensor. They said they couldn't replicate it and refused to replace it. I walked out of the building and subsequently cheek dropped a call with my dad. I called him and back and then my cheek tried to initiate a FaceTime chat and then put him on speaker.

I talked to a manager after that. He offered to replace my phone but said it wasn't a hardware issue and that the impending software patch would fix it.

I plan to return mine and reactivate my 3Gs until this gets sorted.

32Gig I4 and am having the proximity and dropped call issues. Of the approx. 7 calls I made today, 4 went through okay, one dropped, one got muted and one went to speakerphone, all without me doing anything to purposely cause the unwanted actions.
Also, I find the I4 to be uncomfortable to hold without a skin and nobody has any in this area (all sold out). Otterbox wont be available for 2 more months. Lastly, insurance for this phone seems to be hard to get at a reasonable cost. I guess I just have a litany of issues and am going to return it for a bold 9700. This is my 4th try at trying to love the iPhone and it just isn't going to happen, ( I have tried the original, 3g, 3GS and now the 4) Since I am still within my 30 day return period, it shouldn't be a problem. To all of you that love the phone, you should, it's is a magnificent piece of engineering, it just isn't for me.
Good luck to all of you.

Where did you hear about otterbox being two more months? They told me that there was no eta as of now

When Apple store staff tells us "impending software fix coming" do we believe them?

There are multiple posts of Apple genius bar staff telling people that an impending software patch is coming. Do they typically know things before the blog-o-spehere does? Or is it just an off the cuff statement they make just to appease the customer?

Resetting all settings seemed to fix mine. So far. I'm going to wait for software update. If it happens again I'll bring phone in to Apple

Apple is no longer replacing phones because of the issue as a standard practice. I have tried with 3 different phones and they all demonstrate the problem. The issue is affecting all batches of the phone afaik. It is most likely a software issue that will be addressed with the next update.

I got an I4 at the AT&T store on July 1, upgraded from an iPhone 3G restoring from a backup and syncing -- and I am not having this problem at all.

My girlfriend got an I4 from the att.com preorder, upgraded from an iPhone 3G restroring from backup + syncing, and she is not having the problem at all.

Almost Everyone else in my office got their I4 from the pre-order (either att.com or apple.com), and upgraded from a 3GS, backup + sync, and they are having the problem heavily. It's actually really annoying trying to talk to them on the phone because they keep dialing DTMF, muting, and hanging up!

I certainly believe this is an issue for some users -- but I'm not having the problem at all.

I suspect it is related to restoring from backup + sync from a 3GS config. (just a theory)

I truly think this IS an issue on all handsets, but is only manifesting for some. heres why:

Mine SEEMS to work fine. If i make a test call with the phone sitting on my desk, as soon as my hand gets within 1" of the screen it kicks in and shuts off. BUT when I put it to my head during a call, it has a few times enabled the screen and undesirable actions have occurred. If you hold your phone firmly against your face at all times, its probably fine. I usually hold my phone to my face at teh top edge, but pulled out at the bottom. I have yet to hang up on anyone or anything, but have exited a call to find my phone in the contacts list as it is trying to make a 3 way call.

If Apple is no longer replacing phones for this reason or that reason and just telling people "its a software issue" then people need to start doing return for a full refund, wait till their eligibility resets and then purchase a new one. Also no one should be getting a refurb device within your 30 day window. If you buy a new device and its defective then you get a new device as a replacement. Period.

I took a 1 hour long business call while sitting in front of a mirror, holding the phone naturally with the phone only touching my ear at the top edge, the screen never blinked on except when I pulled the phone away from my ear to enter DTMF tones to enter a conference bridge. My phone absolutely does not have the issue (but as I said above, I do believe other phones do).
