An almost unimaginable number of phones: 41 million last quarter, 78 million in Q1 - that averages out to around 6 phones a second, 24/7/365 (and the rate would have to be even higher if the plants aren't running every second of every day). That's, on average, over half a million completed, tested, boxed, iPhones a day, every day (even just physically carting that many phones away from the factories would be an enormous task). Which means, every necessary part has to arrive at that rate of about half a million a day. Every complex machining step (milling out the frame of the phone, etc.) has to happen at the rate of half a million a day. The OLED screens they want, at the quality and specifications they want, aren't available at that volume. I think that's a big part behind splitting the line, this year, into regular and super-deluxe-extra, so they can build the iPhone equivalent of a Ferrari, at, say, thousands a day, out of parts that are harder to get (and more expensive), along with still building a 7s at half-a-million a day.

A lot of people here are treating it like the 8/Edition is the only worthwhile phone that will be announced next week, and it's some sort of crime if the price is over $1000, since previous iPhones haven't been that expensive. But the whole point is, the 8/Edition isn't like previous iPhones. The 7s is the successor to the 7, the 8/Edition is a Ferrari, ogled by many, bought by few. Normal people (as opposed to us, people who hang out in the comment sections on tech rumors sites), are going to say, "Oh, the Edition looks nice - $1200? two month wait? uh, yeah, not for me, I'll get a 7s", just the way most normal people don't buy Ferraris, even if they think having one would be fun. I'm expecting to buy a 7s to replace my 6. It'll be way faster, have more memory, a better screen, better camera, better water resistance, and so on. And it'll sell for normal iPhone prices. In every way a fantastic upgrade. I'll definitely try out the Edition at the Apple Store, but I don't expect to buy one.

This and your other post on page 5 is spot on. All these people here getting upset over rumors and have no idea what sourcing and manufacturing consist of. I am so tired of reading the Apple is intentionally doing this or that. People getting upset over rumored pricing that has changed at least 10 times now. I am going to go on record and say this and your other post are the smartest replies I have ever read here on macrumors. Bravo to you for using your head and thinking logically. There are so few of us. :)

I think many are overhyping the issues with this release. Sure if the OLED phone is not available I'd be sad. But I'm evacuating from Irma tomorrow so that I don't die, so I think prospective might be in order. It will come out when it does. As for the price, it will I'd expect start at $969-999 (in that $30 range- I don't care where it falls in that range), I have a 7+128GB now so it was a $869 phone. So if the OLED phone is $100 (or maybe $200 if you want more memory) more is that the end of the world? There is a 7+ 256GB at $969 today and I don't see people thinking the world has come to an end. So maybe it's just the hurricane, that has put me in a reflective mood, but it just doesn't seem that any of this is such a big deal.

take your time apple im not buying anymore

I'm curious if these rumors are indeed true how many people they will lose.

Between my phones, iPads, watches, tv and macs in too invested. I love the look of the new galaxies but it doesn't make sense for me to go anywhere

Definition of rumor
  1. 1: talk or opinion widely disseminated with no discernible source

  2. 2: a statement or report current without known authority for its truth

  3. 3archaic : talk or report of a notable person or event

Is there any real credibility to these rumors?

Apple just needs to bump up their cycle for the entire development, sourcing, manufacturing, etc. for all future iPhone releases if they are not doing this on purpose.

We haven't had enough supply for years.

The rumors on this phone have by far been the worst collective rumors I think I've ever read.

I believe the ship date or guesstimate has changed 15 times.

Do you know how upset someone would be if they said, your baby should be born on the 1st of Oct. No the 3rd of Nov. Wait, wait, the 2nd of Oct. Wait this just came in, it is definitely the 17. ****!, it may be January next year.
Actually, that did sort of happen to me. I was supposed to have a baby in mid September of '04 and the little stinker confounded the doctors by arriving half a day before I was due to be induced, in early October. I was meanwhile given several interim estimates after the original due date came and went and endured several instances of false labor throughout September. No, Tim Cook was not the father. :p The kid is thin, though, so I may look into suing Jony Ive for paternity. ;)

New iPhone overpriced----you be the judge.

Who the hell wants a 7s?
Everyone who isn't ready to spend an extra $350 on a phone... The 8 is obviously going to be more expensive, and it's unlikely to have features the 7s/7s+ won't have, so you can get a more familiar form factor with an LCD with most of the cool new features of the 8. Besides, the 7s just might be more stable overall.

Yep. I have a 6S and I'm fine skipping this touch-ID-less $1000+ phone. Plus I prefer to have the "S" models. You miss out on the fun of the new design, but you get it refined and perfected.
Sort of. Iphone 7 kind of upended this. It really was more of an iPhone 6SS/6SS Plus since it was a refinement of the 6 and 6 Plus body style.

I had hoped to get an iPhone 8/IPhone Edition or whatever the OLED one is to be called. But I am really uncomfortable about the sheer newness of the design. I may chicken out and get the Plus version of the LCD phone if they give it stereo audio recording capability. If they don't, I probably will hang onto my 7 Plus another year, if the radical new design is reported to have problems.

Or maybe iMessage, the convenience to have all your messages got to every device including your computer.....that alone is worth it to me not to use Android full time.

BAM

That's my only issue. I have kids with iPads and that's how they contact the wife and I if we leave them alone for dinner etc

If true this is not good news. This is the Apple Watch release all over again... people waiting months, giving up, etc. Apple, get your supply chain in order! No excuse for this!!

I just hope that with the smaller antenna lines that there isn't an reduction in cell phone reception and call clarity because that would really sucks at these prices. :)

And save a measly $200? whats the point.

$200 can go a long way toward other things. Like AirPods for example.

What’s the point of Chinese slave labor if you can’t meet launch dates.

If you are gonna be late and charge 1000 dollars. You should arrive with Apple Pencil support and a larger screen for making people wait for such a expensive device with a limited feature set.

SMH, it's much more useful than AR gimmicks and Face ID. I think most Apple fans would choose pencil support over Face ID or AR unsurprisingly.

This is why the Note 8 remains in a league of it's own.

Really curious how this will be handled, as a iPhone upgrade program day one customer. I got my Jet Black 7 plus approximately 2 weeks after launch day this year, and was told that should be close enough for them to allow me to upgrade in a grace period, or pay a single payment difference worse case.

This will get significantly more messy assuming a 2-3 month or more delay to get the OLED iPhone 8, especially if they release the new model on time next year.

Last year, I sent an email to Tim Cook explaining my disappointment as an iPhone Upgrade Program member. With almost no notice, I found that to upgrade the I was require to go to an Apple Store, although the nearest was a couple hours from me. I expressed my concern and idea that the flagship program should allow upgrade by mail, in a similar fashion to Express Repair. Take my credit card number and put a hold for the full amount until you receive my old phone (within 10 days). Provide clear guidance on what scratchess/damage is acceptable or unnaceptable and might require additional charges, just like what would happen at the Apple Store. I got a call back from a senior assistant that took my concerns via phone.

Let's hope it's changed this year. At this point, it might be took late, but submit similar feedback at https://www.apple.com/feedback/ if you want this too. Also, express concerns with any possible delays and adaptation at the program.
