While I'll applaud any progress being made by Apple, it's all a too little too late. WWMC in Barcelona will proof 2019 is the year apple will trail in innovation but at a very expensive price. Those are ingredients for a schrinking overall marketshare. 2019 will be the year too much milking takes it's toll.

Touch ID under the display: This one is hard to believe. Face ID is more secure than Touch ID and seems like Apple'd authentication method of choice going forward, starting with the iPhone X and expanding to the iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, and iPhone XR last year.Kuo agrees, noting that Apple doesn't plan to return to Touch ID in any capacity with its 2019 iPhone lineup back in September.

I want this! Not a big fan of the Face ID. Sometimes, you just want to reach over to the nightstand and turn on your phone.

FaceID is the most advanced and secure technology in any smartphone. No competitor has come close to replicating its security features. Apple is not gong to go back to the past when what it is doing today is so much better.

I agree, I am enthusiastic about the superior technology of Apple's FaceID.
But we still have a problem using FaceID lying in bed. That scenario cannot be fulfilled with Face-ID without new furniture. For a minimalist like me, it's actually an unsightly taboo. Even this scenario does not work:

In fact, the iPhone XS needs a minimum angle of 25° (based on distance 30 cm / 12 inches and height difference to bed 20 cm / 8 inches).

To avoid buckling of the lightning connector (I don't like electro smog and slow charging) you need a kind of pedestal.

Therefore I have to deactivate FaceID for the night, because I have to run the iPhone three times on average at night. Unfortunately, there is no system setting to automatically switch back from FaceID to (maybe the upcoming TouchID Under Display?) during the night. With the fingerprint sensor on my beloved SE I never had this problem.

I'm very happy with my iPhone X. It would need something more compelling or lower price point to entire me into upgrading.

FaceID a rush job as they couldn't do TouchID under the screen........ Confirmed.
If that was the case then they did one hell of a job as Face ID is extremely good.

I really enjoyed FaceID and then came winter. Can’t get my half covered face. Obviously
For me its a god send in winter. I can wear gloves and still authenticate in. It was one of the biggest reasons I was excited to get Face ID.

What I suspect is, if the revenue gets worst in Apple’s eyes over the next quarters in 2019, they will choose to something dramatic.

I am betting the following:
- Jump on 5G soon or mid cycle
- Smarller notch
- USB C

- Cheaper entry price. iPhone X series might go down to
* $799 XS
* Max 899
* XR at 699,
* original iPhone X reintroduced at $599,
* original XR $499,
* iPhone 8 $399,
* iPhone 7 $299

Or, just accept there is market saturation.

XR $600
2019 X $700
2019 X Max $800

"To date, we've heard the next versions could feature a triple-lens rear camera, Face ID improvements, slightly thinner displays, and more."

The current iPhone has the optimal camera for its size. This concludes the chapter.
I don't think you can get much more out of it.

Unfortunately DJI (instead of Apple) has now taken the next logical step: The "DJI Osmo Pocket" is a horny thing. It was immediately sold out worldwide for the Christmas business. Quite rightly so. Together with an old iPhone (e.g. SE) you have a fantastic film/photo equipment. DJI is now just as professional as Apple, it's a tragedy that Apple didn't buy this Chinese company in time when it might still have been possible.

Hopefully, Apple's mindless marketing will not be competing for more lenses, but will be guided back on track by Apple's former technology leaders. The development of meaningful things such as FaceID monitors (Mac mini) and other simple but effective technical implementations made Apple famous. Not the race to compete in display size, gimmicks, wristband color and edge roundness.

As threatening as the market saturation in the iPhone sector is, there is hope that Apple will come to its senses again and no longer let itself be distracted by marketing games or crazy 'analysts', but will again develop new hardware and intuitive software, they were the best.

That little thing is the most beautiful piece of tech i have seen in 2018. Dont like the narrow field of view and couple of other things so will probably wait for version 2 , but who needs a 1100 $ iphone when you have that little piece of tech with you all the time.
Its just amazing.

...it will still lack the extensibility (memory card), the battery life, the lightning-fast charging capability, and the camera quality of Android flagship smartphones while being more expensive.

Clearly this John the Baptist fellow doesn't know his butt from a hole in the ground, let alone anything about smartphones.

1. There's no need for a memory card when you have ample on-board storage. Even his precious Android has never managed to make good on it's promise of Adoptable Storage (it flat out doesn't work as advertised).
2. iPhones have outlasted their comparable generation Androids since the iPhone 6.
3. USB-PD is a brand-agnostic standard and the last two years of iPhones have had it; this clown is just flat-out lazy.
4. Sorry, iPhone images have always better than Android's, especially if you're approaching it from a social media standpoint. To this day, Android compresses images before uploading to recognized social media sites. Oh, and pictures on the Pixels suck. There, I said it.
5. The only thing he got right, was half right; he didn't state, you get what you pay for.

Agreed. Face ID... “All-in”, my ass. Apple will be forced to eat those words.
How will they eat those words? Even if they were to implement Touch ID under the display (which I think is HIGHLY unlikely) how would they be eating their words? It would just give people the choice of what they want to use. Face ID is more secure. Face ID works well for a majority of the population. Its the natural step forward.

It was a perfect storm of changes that caused the demise of Touch ID. The in-glass sensors suffered slightly lower yield anyway but with the move to OLED screens (thicker glass) the capacitive touch sensor couldn't hit the false failure v's speed required.

Many people seem to be assuming the article is suggesting TouchID would come back in lieu of FaceID. But if they left FaceID in place and brought back TouchID as an option to use (even in combination with FaceID), that would be great. If both were used, we just got "two-factor authentication" for unlocking an iPhone which would be even more secure.

For the record, I put "two-factor authentication" in quotes because true 2FA includes two of the following: 1) something you know, 2) something you have, or 3) something you are. In this scenario both would fall under #3, so I don't think it would be true 2FA.
