I don't see how. Both have situations where they fall flat in favor of the other, so having both and being able to choose either of the two to unlock your phone depending on the situation would maximize convenience, and having to authenticate with both to unlock your phone would maximize security.

For example, if your phone is lying flat on the table and can't properly see your face then you could just touch it with your finger to jump in, while in situations where you directly look via Face ID right away.

Conversely, people who are either really concerned with security, or have an identical sibling they don't trust, could choose the phone to require both methods before letting you in (or only Touch ID).

I don't think it's actually going to happen, I think Apple is going all-in on Face ID instead. But I could definitely see how having both to choose from on-the-fly and depending on the situation would be a convenience for many people.
No way Apple is going to add more hardware complexity (that could also increase the price of the phone) for a handful of niche cases where Face ID isn’t optimal. This is some analyst throwing a bunch of stuff at the wall and then seeing what sticks.

Why do people even give those analysts attention, they talk out of pure imagination. There's no way they can know what the iPhones would have, and who is he by the way? Because there's no way we're seeing Touch ID again, not in the next 2-3 years. Apple barely started making Face ID even more secure and advanced, they won't stop for sure.

Given a choice would people take touch ID under the screen with a true full screen phone, or keep the notch with faceid.

I'm really not sure which I'd prefer.

At least one new iPhone released in 2019 will sport a USB-C port, smaller notch, and the return of Touch ID under the display, according to Jean Baptiste Su, Vice-President and Principal Analyst at consulting firm Atherton Research.

iphone-xs-gold.jpg

Su shared his prediction in a Forbes column about Apple lowering its revenue guidance for the first quarter of its 2019 fiscal year:This is the first Apple rumor we've ever heard from Su, and the Forbes contributor network has published its fair share of questionable content about Apple in recent years, so treat this rumor with a healthy dose of skepticism. Many analysts not named Ming-Chi Kuo simply make guesses -- and not always educated ones.

Let's imagine these features prove to be true, though, and examine what that would mean for the next iPhone:USB-C: For many years, critics believed Apple would never switch to USB-C on its iOS devices, and then it did exactly that with the 2018 iPad Pro. Will the iPhone follow suit this year? Notorious supply chain publication DigiTimes seems to think so, so Su is not alone in his prediction. With many of the latest Macs equipped with USB-C or Thunderbolt 3 ports, which share the USB-C connector design, moving from Lightning to USB-C on the iPhone would create one primary I/O standard across not only Apple devices but hundreds of other electronics. The switch from Lightning to USB-C would almost certainly cause an uproar among at least some Apple customers, who already had to replace their docks, cables, and other accessories when Apple switched from its 30-pin dock connector to Lightning back in 2012.It's also worth considering that Apple has emphasized a wireless future, so one possibility is that the Lightning connector sticks around until there is no connector whatsoever.
Touch ID under the display: This one is hard to believe. Face ID is more secure than Touch ID and seems like Apple's authentication method of choice going forward, starting with the iPhone X and expanding to the iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, and iPhone XR last year.Kuo agrees, noting that Apple doesn't plan to return to Touch ID in any capacity with its 2019 iPhone lineup back in September.
Smaller notch: This one is certainly plausible. As the iPhone design continues to evolve, Apple will surely find ways to reduce the size of the notch, even if only by a fraction of a millimeter.
It's only January, so we're still early in the rumor cycle about 2019 iPhones. Over time, we should get a clearer picture about what to expect from more reputable sources like Kuo. To date, we've heard the next versions could feature a triple-lens rear camera, Face ID improvements, slightly thinner displays, and more.

Hmm, based on Apple's current pricing scheme I see this iPhone starting at $1499.

FaceID a rush job as they couldn't do TouchID under the screen........ Confirmed.
Even if that were the case they wouldn't go back on it now. They've already said how much more secure the FaceId is.

Face ID and Touch ID?

Not likely.

Much as I prefer Touch ID, Apple will dig in their heels and all future iPhones will have Face ID.

This "analyst" is just hedging all his bets.

I think the only thing that will come true with his prediction is the USB-C connection. TouchID is not coming back (wishful thinking, click bait on his part). The smaller notch is probable but highly unlikely.

I wish Vegas took bets on what these “analysts” spout out. I’d pretty much ALWAYS take the under and be a very rich man.

Making these changes is just a way of making the company look alive. When I used to have snakes, sometimes I would have to poke and nudge the mice to make them look more alive and appealing to my snakes. This is what's happening now with Apple, they are out of ideas and they are more expensive than any other phone. They are just now learning that folks won't pay a premium for average tech.

Forbes publishes more anti-Apple articles than any other major news source (seriously, do a Google News search for Forbes Apple). That quote from the analyst is a case in point. I’m not saying Apple shouldn’t be critiqued or criticized but Forbes generally has a negative bias towards Apple.

What good is USB-C if it will be locked down?

It likely won't be. It's rumored external drive support and more were pushed out from iOS 12 to iOS 13. That's why the new Pro's, although still a great product, feel somewhat incomplete since they are missing some of those new iPad specific figures. iOS 13 should expand on the abilities of USB C. Plus, with this drop in revenue, Apple will absolutely be doing everything possible to knock off probably a good amount of the complaints people have had for years to breathe some new life into the platform.

To anybody thinking that Touch ID is returning, you’ve missed the obvious clues in iOS devaluing the usefulness of Touch ID even in existing devices.

iOS is developing its security into passive identification where the user doesn’t have to do anything. The device just checks for itself if the authorized user is the one using it. Touch ID is an active authentication, where you're asked to confirm who you are.

Previously with Touch ID, iOS would guide actions so that it would check your fingerprint when you’re already touching it. Unlocking the phone by pressing the home button, check fingerprint. It would never ask you to verify your identity repeatedly in regular use.

When logging into a website, previously, it was assumed you already unlocked your device and asking to place your finger on Touch ID was seen as too much friction and annoying so it just pre-filled your login credentials. Now, you have to purposefully authenticate while with FaceID this action continues to be frictionless. It just looks at you and knowing you’re the authorized user, prefills the login. It happens instantly.

iOS is full of examples like this where going back to Touch ID would be reversing all the little changes they’ve made to the UI. Apple always gives clues to where they’re headed by the small changes they introduce in software first to adapt behaviour before the hardware is released. Touch ID isn’t coming back. The already excellent Face ID is only going to get better.

3. USB-PD is a brand-agnostic standard and the last two years of iPhones have had it; this clown is just flat-out lazy.
Recent iPhones have been tested to draw up 18 W of power while charging. (Some) Android phones can go higher than that. However that difference is significantly smaller than pre-USB-PD vs 18 W. One might also factor in that Android phones tend to have a larger battery for a similar battery life than iPhones, meaning their higher power draw doesn't translate 1:1 into a faster charging time.

Touch ID will be returning as I have stated over the past year. It’s implementation is still unknown. Either as a supplemental addition, or on a new entry level device. Apple would also have an opportunity to achieve large unit cost savings in a device without Face ID. :apple:
There is also the option of an iPhone 8 SE which would allow them to offer a cheaper phone with current innards.

I don’t get this. Face ID has been completely flawless for me. It really feels like your phone doesn’t have a password. It just works. With Touch ID, you have to deliberately unlock it.

Would you rather have a door that you have to unlock every time you want to go through or a door with a doorman who knows you and let’s you in without you ever having to put a key in the door?

I will prefer TouchID if it's going to lower the iPhone price. I don't use animoji, so apart from authentication, there isn't much use of that expensive FaceID system. TouchID is secure enough for authentication and also cheaper. I would rather buy a lower price upgrade to XR with higher resolution LCD screen and TouchID. Also as a side benefit, removing the FaceID will result in a smaller notch.
USB-C would be also be a nice upgrade - giving you the convenience of using one cable for charging all gadgets. Irrespective of whether lightning is better than USB-C, having one universal port is much more preferable.
Even pre-order from now if Apple announces XR upgrade with TouchID, higher resolution LCD screen and USB-C port.

My thought too unless there is something I’m missing... maybe making the phone thicker with the usb-c port will open space for a bigger battery????
iPad pro 2018 is thinner than any Iphone and has USB c.

Jeez, why does no one get what this guy is saying?

It’s not that there will be TouchID and, separately, FaceID!

No! It’s just that to unlock this future phone, you must touch your face!

Why’s that so hard to understand?

Face ID is a rush job? Yeah... so why haven’t any of Apple’s competitors been able to do it? It’s up there with the most sophisticated hardware ever put into a phone. You have no idea what you’re talking about.

I'm not saying the TrueDepth camera system was a rush job, I'm saying it was never supposed to be an authentication system.....

Would like to make ONE thing crystal clear to everyone.

We are ALL Analysts !

The so-called "Pro" Stock Analysts ALL have a TERRIBLE track record !

Many are just now, within the past two days, catching up to what many of us NON-Pros have been saying for many, many months !

So, "this Analyst" says ...

1.) ALL future iPhones will include a MIN of 4 GB of DRAM !

2.) Future "high-end" iPhones will include support for 10-bit color, both capture & display ! ... the XS & XS Max are half-way there right now.
