Apple adopt a industry standard AFTER everyone else? Swine will take flight before that day comes.
They only way Apple replaces Lightning if a new USB standard comes out and they adopt it first. They have a thing for being first.

How do you explain that they replaced the lighting port on the new 2018 iPad Pro with USB-C?

It was a perfect storm of changes that caused the demise of Touch ID. The in-glass sensors suffered slightly lower yield anyway but with the move to OLED screens (thicker glass) the capacitive touch sensor couldn't hit the false failure v's speed required.

Technically, I believe Craig Federighi stated Face ID was always ‘Plan A’, where as Touch ID under the display was ‘Plan B’, which Apple experimented with touch ID under the display, but once Face ID was working optimally as they had hoped, they scrapped the concept for touch ID under display all together. Either way, Face ID was and is Apple’s future, which obviously a transition to the iPad, and likely eventually to the Mac.

TouchID and FaceID are redundant, IMHO.
I don't see how. Both have situations where they fall flat in favor of the other, so having both and being able to choose either of the two to unlock your phone depending on the situation would maximize convenience, and having to authenticate with both to unlock your phone would maximize security.

For example, if your phone is lying flat on the table and can't properly see your face then you could just touch it with your finger to jump in, while in situations where you directly look via Face ID right away.

Conversely, people who are either really concerned with security, or have an identical sibling they don't trust, could choose the phone to require both methods before letting you in (or only Touch ID).

I don't think it's actually going to happen, I think Apple is going all-in on Face ID instead. But I could definitely see how having both to choose from on-the-fly and depending on the situation would be a convenience for many people.

Touch ID will be returning as I have stated over the past year. It’s implementation is still unknown. Either as a supplemental addition, or on a new entry level device. Apple would also have an opportunity to achieve large unit cost savings in a device without Face ID. :apple:

gone are the days of mind blowing new products.

Why does everything have to be ‘mind blowing’? Was Face ID not innovative enough with 3D facial mapping? What about the success of the AirPods? How about the Apple Watch Series 4 that has some
of the most advanced health features available with EKG, Fall detection, ect?

No, Touch ID returning is not hard to believe. As I said from day one, Apple never stopped pursuing in-display Touch ID.
They had planned it for the iPhone X but cancelled it at an early stage due to several issues. However while I’ve heard they’re gearing up to debut it, I have no confirmation of it being this year.

It is not one of the other, I can confirm to you with 100% certainty that Touch ID will return.

USB-C is a feature that would get me to finally upgrade my 7 Plus.
I went from 3G to 5s because of fingerprint scanner. I went from 5s to 7+ because of waterproofing. No feature since the 7+ has given me any reason to upgrade, but USB-C on the iPhone would do it.

Why, what exactly does USB-C bring to the table for you?

One charger for all, laptops, Android, iOS, and any other electronic gadgets.

Except that charger won’t work with the Apple Watch. And it will take a few years before USB-C is widely available. Meanwhile wireless Qi charging is taking off and being more widely implemented in public places like airports and Starbucks.

My expectation is that Apple intends to remove the port entirely from the iPhone before switching to yet a new standard. Then, highly mobile devices like phones, watches and AirPods will all charge wirelessly. They don’t need USB-C to move massive amounts of data, or work with pro apps. The iPad and Mac do. As for android compatibility, why would Apple care? And what other major electronic gadgets are using USB-C?

Bottom line for me is that Apples next step is wireless, eliminating standard ports altogether. If a customer wants to plug a wire physically into an iPhone, it’ll be through something like a smart connector, otherwise it’ll be AirPower.

This „analyst“ lacks total understanding how apple inc works and furthermore, more importantly how tim cooks head works.

The touch id thing is complete bs. nevertheless would be great, but will not happen, 100%.

The same obstacle is there for TouchID as you would presumably be wearing gloves outside. And the fallback is the same: enter a PIN.
If you are wearing special gloves that can trigger capacitive touchscreens. FaceID has the small advantage here in that it can 'unlock' notifications.

I think it's plausible (at best) that TouchID will return, but ONLY as an additional unlock option. It will not replace FaceID. For people saying it's a step backwards: you can still use a 4 digit passcode to unlock a current iPhone if you want. You can set up no security at all if you want. TouchID is still leagues ahead of either of those options.
