I hope everyone knows that 95% of the people on line at the 5th ave store are scalpers, almost all Chinese, who barely can speak English. Otherwise, the line probably wouldn't be as bad. See them everyday on my way to work.

Well, Apple did stop that last year by taking credit card only sales. But, people without credit complained about that. Remember the news stories about people who were low income being denied iPads. Apple chose the policy that would give them less negative press and legal woes.

So is this low supply or high demand? I find it odd that Apple hasn't put out a press release about how magical the opening weekend sales were...

Austin SXSW Store

I waited in line for about an hour at the Austin SXSW Apple Store. I was probably 50th in line. Walked out with 2 64GB 3G models.

Pathetic.

What is 'Pathetic' is the reporting. Always shown is the downtown Manhattan Apple Store which is NOT reality. Thousands of illegals dredged up from Chinatown and sent repeatedly to the store with enough cash to buy the limit and have a few bucks for themselves for the trouble. The winners? The really bigtime gangsters who use human mules to carry this stuff back to Asia where the iPad is marked up several times over the retail price.

Who suffers? Only true customers.

Want an iPad with little or no lines? Go to an Apple Store in East Bofunk, Flyoverland.

I'll admit I'm not the type of person to stand in line for this kind of thing (more the type to order it in the first few minutes of online ordering and get it delivered last Wednesday, thankyouverymuch) but still, I don't understand the hostility directed at these people. Who are they hurting? They wouldn't be there if they didn't want to be, so more power to 'em.

And think of this way: the more people lining up means all the more effort Apple is going to pour into the next iteration. So quit slamming these people and relax.

iPad 2 line at Fifth Avenue retail store in Manhattan (Thanks, Leon)
While lines were long for the iPad 2 launch in the United States on Friday of last week, availability has been very scarce in the days since, with hopeful customers lining up outside Apple's retail stores each morning hoping that stock has arrived. And even when stock has arrived, customers have typically had to be very close to the front of the line to even have a chance at securing one of the hard-to-get devices.

Several MacRumors readers have written in and shared photos of the experiences trying to obtain an iPad 2, and frustration seems to abound as the long lines continue even a week after launch. Readers have reported that the line at Apple's flagship Fifth Avenue store in Manhattan is essentially a perpetual mass of people numbering in the hundreds, with customers camping out and swapping positions in-and-out day after day as they wait for more stock to arrive. Apple has erected barriers to contain the line, and once the line reaches the end of the barriers each day after stock has been distributed, no new customers are permitted to join the line.

iPad 2 line at The Forum Shops retail store in Las Vegas (Thanks, Danny)
Customers are especially keen on trying to pick up iPad 2 units from in-store sales, as shipping estimates for new online orders were quickly pushed out to 4-5 weeks. We've heard that some Apple retail stores are holding iPad 2 shipments received during the day until the following morning, with some stores opening early when they have stock in order to disperse their supplies and customer lines as much as possible before they open for regular business. Some forum readers have also being using inventory tracking features to try to pin down supplies at Target stores around the country.

Er, no. As a new yorker who can see the fifth ave store from his window, there are no lines today at lunch time, and no barricades. Went inside the store and no lines, no barricades.

They are sold out, but don't believe ALL the hype you read about it.

Who cares what these people do with their money? Its kind of a troll-ish post imho. Those people, how dare they! Its how I feel when I stand in line for a midnight launch of a game and some 40-something year old woman walks by and scoffs, I'd like to say. "Listen bi*tch, I go to work, and pay my taxes, pay for the schools YOUR kids go to, and I don't even have kids, so F off, and let me be."

Half of the people posting on the board wagging their fingers check this site day by day looking for a nugget of information about anything Apple related, I would say thats in the same category. At least these people had the energy to get off their chairs and go outside and participate in a social activity instead of just waiting for someone to bring it to them. I just hate articles that attack people because their passionate about something, or critisizing the way they choose to live their lives, or spend their money. I dunno, just how I feel. :/

I'm sorry, I just can't help myself... HAHA I got mine on launch day and only waited 2 hours inside best buy!
Immature I know, I just couldn't help it...

Also, how many do people expect apple to make and have available on launch day? It does take time to put these things together you know...

Sent from my iPad 2!!!

I wish...

Has anybody, who ordered online and got the 5 to 7 business day estimate, receive shipping notification?

Sadly no - I wasn't expecting it to be this crazy. Ordered at 4:30 am pacific 64gb/AT&T/Black ended up with 5-7 day ship time. No movement yet whatsoever. It's frustrating.

Also put in 1.5 hours at Walmart only to find out they got no 3G at all. Have trolled all the Apple stores, Targets and Wal Marts around in the last week to no avail. Seems like trying to find the AT&T ones is the worst. I have noticed in the comments on some of the other posts that those don't seem to be moving until the max shipping time.

I am trying to console myself that we have it better than some :)

What is really a shame is the fact that you thought leisure was spelled leasure.

What is really a shame is that you pointing out spelling errors and rolling your eyes at people seems to somehow make you think you are superior to them. When in fact the eye rolling makes me think you're a 12 year old girl.

This strikes me as Fox News like reporting. Talk about XXX but show footage of YYY to bolster your lies, er claims.

I guess some figure 5 hours beats 5 weeks. Personally, I have enough other devices to type on to keep me busy until iPad 2 arrives in the mail.

I want one of these too!

...but my life and time are just too valuable to be spent waiting in line. I mean, is this device worth spending hours of your life in line for? Will your life be so dramatically improved that you can't wait until the supply situation improves?

Go read a book, take a walk in the park, see a movie, do something productive. I actually feel sorry for people who wait in line to buy a product that they can live without. It's not like bread in the Soviet Union, people!

?... Not only are numerous customers being turned away but fights among people standing in line are becoming commonplace in NY... Unfortunately, it will probably take someone getting seriously injured or hurt before something is done to manage this disaster....

so much for a civilized country :D

Even the North Koreans are laughing at how badly Apple has botched their iPad 2 launch.

err No, they aren't, you might think that sounded funny in your head but that not only doesn't make it right, but shows an embarrassing lack of understanding.

Long lines a whole week after launch? ..that's pretty much the dream scenario for any manufacturer...as soon as supplies are in ... they are sold.
Flying off the shelves, and the money building up.

Here's an alternative strategy as practiced by the other tablet makers..

copy Apples original design, make it heavier, uglier, underpowered, and less user-friendly.

Build hype based only on infantile fanboyism.

Release to a world completely dis-interested...voila..no queues! and err no sales..

The sound you're hearing is the other tablet manufacturers sobbing at the pointlessness of their existence...

Oh, and before you mention litigation again...
Is Apple forcing anyone to queue up? No.
Can anyone leave the queue should they so wish? Yes.

Case dismissed... plus a fine for time-wasting.

Been in line

One day prior to launch, I won an iPad2 from TiPb. The following Tuesday i received my Apple gift card via FedEx but still had to track down an iPad.

It only took me 2 days and a little bit of my free time to get one. The first morning i showed up at my local Apple store around 8:45 and they ran out of stock with only 2 people left in front of me.

Yesterday morning, I got up a little earlier and secured a space 3rd in line at 6:00 am. As luck would have it, the 2 guys in front of me wanted 3G units and all the store received was 16 and 32gb WiFi only units. They left and i was first in.

People were showing up as late as 5 minutes before opening. And were turned away.

So, early bird gets the worm. Saw it happen 2 days in a row.

P.s.

One more thing,

I do think that it is poor form for the Apple store to allow people in line to buy multiple units. That's why eBay is stocked and the stores are not.
