In retrospect, I think notch is a good design. Yes, it looks funky in landscape. But you are gaining extra display area. And at least on Android, the display area around the notch can be turned off.

I suspect in few years, a majority of the phones will have a notch (unless they can make camera and other sensors much smaller or place them behind the screen).
Well I think we're not far off not needing a notch. Already we have fingerprint sensors integrated in the same area as the screen. We've seen cameras that can pop up from within the phone so you don't need to reserve a space on the front for it. What needs to be solved (maybe it has already?) is having the other sensors in with the screen and where to put the earpiece so it works effectively... if that's possible then you don't really need a notch.
[doublepost=1526570195][/doublepost]The problem I still have with apple dropping the headphone jack is providing you with crappy lightning headphones rather than what they should be doing: giving Bluetooth ones. The whole point they said of getting rid of it was because they believe in a truly wireless future, and yet THEY GIVE YOU WIRED HEADPHONES JUST USING THE OTHER DAMN PLUG! And they STILL haven't released their wireless charger.

Apple make up your mind whether you want everything to be wireless or not...

“Bring your sh** together Apple” — winter 2017.
Not to mention that lightning headphone cannot be used in EVERY OTHER DEVICE (well, iPad is one but no more). And it sounds equally crappy as AirPods.

Hilariously wrong
[doublepost=1526504734][/doublepost]

More interrupted unorganic totally irrational space? Uh ok
[doublepost=1526504878][/doublepost]

Gaining? Lol you’re not gaining anything. You’re losing the space to the notch. Screens have never ever meant to have odd shaped spacial interruptions like that. What if TVs came with notches? Macbook Pros? Movie theater screens?
Care to explain why I'm hilariously wrong? As far as I can tell, no smartphone maker has perfected the camera under the display technology.

They totally lost me with the notch. I refuse to buy a phone where the middle of the top of the screen is missing.

The reason the iPhone X has a notch, is because it does not have a chin. OnePlus should probaboy check itself before it goes mocking a company that it's obviously trying to copy.

As far as I know Apple has the only FaceID that most banks and merchants accept as being secure. You can unlock Android phones using theirs but can’t use it for logins for banks etc. There are probably financial institutions and companies that don’t accept Apple FaceID but everything I’ve read about Android based facial recognition is that it’s very easy to fool.

yup. Android facial recognition is image based and is not considered secure.

you need to use either the retina scanner or fingerprint sensor for legitimate security.

If there was a forward movement, I might be more forgiving of not having a headphone jack. But as successive Android manufacturers prove, the iPhone hasn't gained anything over other handsets by removing the jack - it's simply lost the jack.
MUCH better waterproofing.

There you go.

And don't try to tell me about this phone or that that has a headphone jack and a supposed IP rating. By and large, those ratings have been proven to be a lie.
[doublepost=1526582082][/doublepost]
The article says rain resistant, which does not necessarily mean equal to waterproof.
And in many (non-Apple) cases, has proven to be a cruel joke.
[doublepost=1526582554][/doublepost]
my bad, should have said water resistant

from their website, "Thanks to water resistance, your OnePlus 6 is well-equipped to survive a drop in the sink or a spilled glass of water. Just don’t take it for a swim."
So, IP?4 or 5 at most.

I'm all for removing legacy ports, but a port that the vast majority of people use is not a legacy port.
That's what everyone said when Apple removed the RS-422/232 Serial ports in favor of "What's That?" USB Ports on the original iMac.

Two years later, it was very difficult to find a printer or scanner with a "serial port".
[doublepost=1526583227][/doublepost]
You mean, like Apple? In this case Apple really wasn't the first company with a notch.
The iPhone X debuted 2 months after the Android phone with the notch.

Not "copying". "Parallel Development".

Happens in tech. Actually a lot. Due to product development timetables, unless something is more like a year from one brand to another (like the recently-discussed Samsung iPhone clone, which was almost exactly a year apart), Parallel Development is almost always the answer competitors appear to have "copied" a feature.

Apple may not have been leading in design post iPhone 6, but they have clearly taken the lead. Expected, but the fact all others are using a notch design is rather humorous. Still, nobody has caught up to Face ID tech as sophisticated as Apple’s.

You do realize Apple can get away with half the RAM because iOS is infinitely more optimized than Android? I don’t have a single issue with heavy multi-app usage on my iPad Pro 10.5 with a measly 4GB of RAM, which is a much more powerful device than any Android phone currently available. 3GB and 4GB is more than plenty for the iPhone X and X Plus phones coming.

You have to remember that Android is way ahead in multitasking features then primitive iOS which is now beginning it when Android had it back in 2014! Along with that; Android has a file system too. Because of this multitasking in Android; it has to have more memory to operate the advance Android OS! iOS is just beginning to develop a file system! LOL!

So for 2 years, you had to deal with adaptors or finding a special printer for your iMac? Great.

Haven't missed the headphone jack one bit since Apple sunset it.
That's nice for you, but how does not having the jack improve your experience? Many people prefer using wired headphones for their superior sound features at the high end, and for their independence from batteries. Having a phone jack still allows you to use bluetooth all you want. Removing the phone jack doesn't improve that situation. It does, however, extremely affect folks who prefer wired headphones - enough so that many people no longer buy iPhones. That's a decision Apple has made, and I hope that other high end phones don't follow suit. There is absolutely no good reason to do so from the customers' viewpoint.

Yeah, we know the date....should we be reinventing the wheel while we’re at it? It’s 2018! Chuck it in the trash!

Wireless is less reliable. Not better. Less reliable.

If you love wireless, fine. But why remove the jack??

(Spoiler : $$$$$$$ and greed)

Yeah men u know more than APPLE lol
Hey Timothy, call this dude, he’ll teach u

For you, I guess. Nice job generalizing what you like to everyone. Sounds like Apple.
Isn't that the general trend regarding the 3.5 mm jack on this forum? The standard defense: "I don't need or use wired headphones, I don't miss the jack - so it's archaic to include it as a feature, and if you miss it, you must also miss floppy disks and RS232 serial ports." No, we don't miss 30/40 year old technology, but we old fart wired headphone users miss using the iPhone with a technology which is decidedly still current, even though its roots go back many decades, and removing it had absolutely no affect on your bluetooth preferences. Yeah, let's say I don't care about classical music - so when recording companies remove all classical music from the offerings, it's just fine with me, and you must be stuck in the past with Beethoven, et al.

In the near future, "And yes, there's still a headphone jack” is going to sound as laughable as when Blackberry would have said “And yes, there’s still a physical keyboard”.

Agreed, for me it was with AirPods. Work great on my Apple products and my Android phone.

Same with me. Airpods have opened up the world of audiobooks for me while doing chores. An impossibility with wired earphones. I still can't grasp how comfortable airpods are. They just DO NOT BUDGE regardless of what I am doing.

I was one of those who got pissed when apple got rid of headphone jack. But year later i startrd to think thats the best thing to happen. I still use my wired headphones at work with mac but only because i have them. and it feels annoying.
in this aspect Apple are truly leaders and showed the industry a better way forward. Same with USB c.
someone mentioned magsafe and i agree that should have stayed.

So? How does that make the removal of the headphone jack any less stupid? That's the single thing I absolutely hate about my iPhone 7.
Has the delay issue been solved? I know on my BT 4.X headphones if I try to watch a video, the audio lags behind the image. Has this been fixed or is it still the case?

That’s your headphones that have the issue. The ugly Jabras I have are 3yrs old never had a delay issue for any media on 7, SE, 8, or 5S.

The advantage of a slower transition is that it's less of a PITA for the users who use said tech until the newer tech becomes the standard.

That said, I personally still miss the 3.5mm jack because for me it offers certain conveniences over my BT IEMs.

Like saving lots of money going through various headsets to find one that actually performs to their claimed standards and lives up to your needs!

This year I’m over $800!
