Jesus, this is long-winded. I apologize if I cover something mention, but I got bored after the first or second paragraph. Can Bluetooth stream lossless audio at full quality? Are there are ton of studio standard headphones out there that support USB C or Bluetooth?

Had Apple left the headphone jack and everyone else abandoned it, you'd be on here talking up the benefits of wired vs. wireless and how Apple's decision to keep it was "brave" (not your word, but another poster's) for including it while everyone else abandoned it.

1. This has nothing to do with Apple
2. Sound quality has been addressed in the article at the end

lol, when did they get rid of the battery? sure it has evolved but the first battery was made around 1800

Ok. When is the last time battery technology saw an improvement ?
How about the jack ? Is it the same as it is 10 - 20 years ago ?

I'm agreeing with Apple that the headphone jack is too big and could use an overhaul. But they just made a mess of it. Lightning EarPods cannot connect to my 2000+ macbook without a stupid dongle. And I cannot charge my phone while listening to music. Or I buy wireless AirPods, but they don't offer better audio quality and cannot be charged. But if wireless is the future, then why do the macs still have the headphone port?

Haven't missed the headphone jack one bit since Apple sunset it.

Agreed. I was shocked at the increase in comfort using bluetooth over wired headphones. I'm particularly in love with active noise canceling. I have not had issues with my headsets dying during usage (includes flights from West coast to UK), but I know how they influence my day and ensure I charge them.

Yesterday I forgot to bring my AirPods to work. This is like the third time this has happened since getting them at launch. I have nice backup wired Sony earbuds and every time I wear them I quickly become super annoyed with the freaking wires. They get tangled around my arm while typing, they get tugged slightly and pull out of my ear. I'll get up to fill my water or go to the bathroom and instead of continuing to listen to music on my MBP about 40ft away they'll pull out of my ears immediately when I stand up. Weirds me out every time because I'm so used to wireless. There's nothing wrong with using the lightning port—especially when Apple provides an adapter and lightning EarPods in the box! Sometimes it's good to rip the band-aid off so we can all move forward.

I like having wired headphones while I work at my desk so I don't have to charge the bluetooth earphones too often, but I only connected them twice to my 8+ in more than 6 months. I find it super annoying to have a cable coming out of my pocket while I'm walking, I didn't buy AirPods so I actually have a wire around my neck, but it isn't as inconvenient as the one going to the phone.
I understand why some people are really annoyed by the lack of the jack on their iPhone though. Bluetooth as I said needs constant charging, I love the fact that my BeatsX charge via lighting so I don't need another cable, but if you buy third party earphones chances are you're going to have a micro usb cable just for them.
And while I'm ok with the iPhone not having a 3.5'' jack I don't want them to remove it from the Mac since there's plenty of space there, same for the iPad. iPad has a lighting port, the Mac has USB-C, so without a dongle the only connector compatible with both devices is the 3.5''

this is really a non-issue.
Wired headphones are going away just as corded telephones.
Unless you're just completely opposed to change...
They are going the way of corded headphones because that's what marketing is dictating at this time, I mean vinyl made a comeback but more for fashion looking at the turntables they sell. Its the same with the notch, people are buying on looks because smartphones really have hit a ceiling of new useful features at this time, so companies copy what sells. Its why each year many new cars are a variation on a similar theme, because this years in thing makes money.

For myself I prefer the sound of my ten year old Sennheisers, and they never need charging, or firmware updates and I can buy new ear cuffs etc as spares still. Above all they sound really amazing. I personally don't think Bluetooth sound as good as wired connections for audio, but each to their own as we all like different things and that's fine, but when people complain about cords getting in the way it does feel we really are digging deeply into the hole of first world problems

Coming from someone who uses an iPhone 6s with OPPO PM-3s, I'm not too worried about the idea of using a dongle when the time comes. 90% of the time I use my headphones when out and about, so I would think that if I took off the dongle off to plug into a laptop or something, it would be nearby. To me the whole thing is just silly 1st world problems.

That being said, bluetooth audio is absolutely terrible. It just is. I tolerate it when using my Powerbeats 3 at the gym, but I'd really rather not.

Correct me if I‘m wrong but AFAIR the Lightning to 3.5 is right in the box. I don‘t get why people are upset with plugging something into a cable adapter while they are perfectly fine with plugging the same cable into a Jack.

Dongles suck. Dongles are a work around to a problem that is created when the manufacturer decides that including the necessary ports, they will not, requiring you to have additional pieces of hardware.

I get that there's a time and place where Dongles are the only solution to things, but with regards to audio ports, Dongles make little sense considering there's a universal standad port available,t hat is ubiquitious, and can be made to fit in extremely tiny spaces while offering full featureset that was looked for.

There was zero technical reason for removing the jack. it was already evidenced, while crudely by the guy who modified his iphone and re-added one in the same spot. there was no real physical hardware in the way preventing it. the jack can also be made waterproof.. So this was not a factor for it's removal. even "thinner" isn't an excuse here because the Jack is found on smaller/thinner devices.

seriously we have enough adapters and dongles in our lives. Why are we cheering on adding another when it was not technically a requirement? I get it. You like wireles over wired. in many situations so Do I. but as mentioned, the jack didn't need to be removed for wireless option. Removing the jack however removes compatibility options from those who use wired devices across number of different audio equipment. And when we voice this, we get nothing but excuses from those who essentially say "I'm happy this way so **** you"

Ultimately, it's consumer teech. Apple isn't going to likely re-add the 3.5mm jack. They're also now rumoured to remove the adapter from the box, further cementing that, if I want my "voice" to be heard. Speak with my wallet. I will NOT be buying any phone that doesn't have a damn good technical reason for removing it. And while I might just be ONE buyer going elsewhere, if companies keep poking their user base like this, its very possible to drive ENOUGh people away to actually start to be noticable.

I was originally annoyed by the headphone jack removal, but can honestly say I don't miss it now. I think Apple made the right call here.

pretty arrogant to think this is a joke on apples expense, isnt it?

apple was not the first nor is it the only company that ditched the headphone jack. there are not references to apple in the keynote.
But Apple is the most visible.

Though I am not sure what OnePlus is trying to achieve here either.

It only shows how powerful Apple is for everyone to copy them. The notch on the Android phones is soo stupid it is unreal, especially that most phones have bottom chins anyway - what is the point of it?

I find myself looking at new phone adverts now, because sadly it is highly unlikely that for the first time in 10 years my next phone will be an iPhone. I've been a Mac user for almost 20 years and embraced the Apple eco system since then, but Apple's path on music does not align with my own (no headphone jack, Apple Music and streaming rammed down my throat, iTunes and the Music app no longer fit for purpose.)

And as for people saying wired headphones are dead, until wireless ones solve the latency issue, inferior sound quality and having to charge them, erm no.

Well, I suppose they're trying to be top notch, yet failing to comprehend that there's more to being Apple than having one.

This phone is kind of growing on me. I love the form factor and the design. Its unfortunate that with todays phone market it is either IOS or Android only. Either choose an OS that respects your individual privacy or an OS that collects every piece of metadata they can extract from you and leverage it any way they choose.

I am glad that rumored Facebook phone with their own OS never materialized. That would have been a privacy nightmare after what happened with CA.

Aside from that, I think this phone is beautiful. I would be interested to know how the Screen resolution and form factor supports videos in 16:9 ratio which is the streaming standard. That issue in itself is what I think hurt the IPhone X form factor from the get go.

Still one of the stupidest decisions Apple has made-along with getting rid of Magsafe.
In fact I do agree about Magsafe: but the headphone jack, has been forgotten long ago by anyone with AirPods. Which, looking around, is a majority of New Yorkers.

If you want a complaint that makes sense: where is the competitors equivalent to a W1 chip? Is Apple's entire competition so inept that they haven't come up with anythings remotely close to the AirPods?

"And of course, just as important as all the things we did steal from Apple are the things we didn't steal from Apple."

Maybe when they develop a half decent set of wireless earphones they'll be a bit more confident to move to the future, or, follow in Apple's foot steps as it's known when Android phone makers do it. Then these remarks will be even sweeter!

Right on. Apple should make things easier, not more difficult.

I feel sorry for friends who have to lug dongles to Starbucks
for their new Macbook Pro's while I just snap in my headphones, Canon SD card, Iphone, and maybe a thumb drive or two with no hassle
at all into my 3 year old 2015 MBP.

I just can’t stop but laugh at those people who uses MacBooks and newer MacBook Pro trying to insert something from 2018 to their computer that is also from 2018.
USB-C is nice on paper. Cable support is not ready. Hard drives still use USB-A most of the time. USB-C port is not as sturdy. I’m not sure how long it will take for majority of customers switching to USB-C.

I was just pointing out that the days of the 400$ flagship are dead and buried.

Edit: And that adapter wouldn't have helped your sister. The headphone adapter is for plugging traditional headphones into the X. It does nothing for lighting to 3.5.

edit, NM.

Agreed, for me it was with AirPods. Work great on my Apple products and my Android phone.

Enjoy paying for that functionality for the rest of your life (lo-ion batteries die after 2-3years, time to drop another £160!)

In the meantime i’ll Keep using my wired headphones which cost £8, and never run out of battery.

If you love wireless, fine. But why not let me use wired?

This guy gets it 100%.

Fewer and fewer people are willing to say Apple f*cked up (probably because they’ve bought a phone without a jack and therefore find it hard to argue against something they’ve done).

Nothing about the jack being there stopped people using wireless. But no one did. Because it’s less reliable, requires expensive purchase of disposable headphones etc etc

Apple had to remove the jack to sell wireless headphones. No. Other. Reason.

They f*cked the consumer, and the whole industry that relies on that jack.

The jack will still be around in 20years. Airpods though...

And they don't take away anything...
Headphone jacks don't need to let in water.

I know that a few models have some kind of water resistance with headphone jacks present, but I wonder if that adds cost to the design. I'd also be curious if that extra space where the jack used to be is used for anything else. Once again I have no issue with a phone having a headphone jack if it makes some consumers happy, I just don't think it will last very long as technology advances.
