Im not sure if I'm more shocked by the blatant ripoff or the fact that they managed to find and hire designers (normally smart people with principles and taste) who have no moral compass or self respect... I mean, what kind of joy would you get out of you ‘design’work when you basically pressed cmd+C on someone else's idea?

Plus the dude is flat-out wrong -- iPhone 7 has a headphone jack. It just happens to not be a century-old port and uses a newer digital port. Not that I use it much after getting my AirPods. But still it's there, and if I needed to I could easily plug into it.

All phones are converging into a single master design. This isn't copying this is what happens, when you iterate on design with the same set of constraints. This is a positive BTW.

I was just thinking about this "threw some shade" thing last week. Like I'm suddenly hearing it everywhere. Is it a phrase that has been around for a while? Is it something new, and what started it.

It's "new" for news writers, bloggers and such, but I remember hearing it back in 1997 when Lil' Kim said "I'mma throw shade if I can't get paid" in "Crush on You." It's a very old figure of speech at this point, that some are trying to use to sound current.

Never heard of them. The problem is it runs Android. I have tried Android over and over and I just don't like it's usability. There are features I wish Apple would copy but the whole of Android is a no buy for me.
Android is a very solid platform now with the new multicore processors. Its like iOS on steroids with some very slick quality of life improvements. If you haven't tried a flagship android now really is the time.

Unlike many of Apple's design choices, the decision to eliminate the headphone jack from the iPhone 7 and the iPhone 7 Plus has not caught on with other smartphone manufacturers, likely due to the negative reaction from consumers.

Is this the negative reaction where consumers bought the phone in record-breaking numbers? Just wondering...

I know sales aren't everything, but Apple manufactures more iPhones in a week than OnePlus sells in a year.

Sadly I don't think a headphone jack, comparatively poor aftersales support, and Android OS would be enough to convince people to switch.
True, what is everything in business is profit. And OnePlus v. Apple profit is probably simply incomparable.

Nice phone.

Blends the customization and power features of Android with the sexy iPhone 7 look.

All at quite the low price. For those who like Android (like myself) or those not locked into Apple this is a very, very good choice.

This review goes a bit beyond the anecdotal, for those of you still interested:

Every one plays the "mocking game" although controversial, everyone has every right to be mocked of.

(something unsettling about that statement) oh well.. moving on.

We know a physical connection is always better in every way.

Why can't the presenters of cheap knock-offs speak proper English? It can't be that hard to find one native English speaker in all of China. With this accent I instantly get the impression of an inferior product.

OnePlus today introduced its new flagship device, the OnePlus 5. During the event where the new phone was announced, OnePlus threw some shade at Apple, mocking the removal of the headphone jack in the iPhone 7 and the iPhone 7 Plus.

"On the bottom, you'll notice that we ditched the 3.5mm headphone jack. The elegance of the overall design is instantly heightened. And who needs a headphone jack anyway? That's why Bluetooth exists, right?" deadpanned Diego Heinz, a designer at OnePlus. "Just kidding. Of course the OnePlus 5 has a headphone jack."

Heinz goes on to pull up a tweet on the subject of headphone jacks, displaying a poll where 88 percent of 8,000 responders said they "like headphone jacks."

Ahead of the launch of the OnePlus 5, there was a lot of discussion on whether OnePlus would follow in Apple's footsteps and remove the headphone jack from the device. There were early design leaks and cases that featured no headphone jack, sparking speculation and leading to the on-stage joke.

This isn't the first time an Apple competitor has mocked the company's design decisions. When Samsung introduced the now-defunct Galaxy Note 7 in August of 2016, Samsung marketing VP Justin Denison made sure to point out the device's headphone jack. "Want to know what else it comes with?" he asked. "An audio jack. I'm just saying."

Unlike many of Apple's design choices, the decision to eliminate the headphone jack from the iPhone 7 and the iPhone 7 Plus has not caught on with other smartphone manufacturers, likely due to the negative reaction from consumers. Though Apple has introduced wire-free AirPods and included Lightning-based EarPods along with the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus, many iPhone customers continue mourn the loss of the headphone jack.

Though the OnePlus 5 still has a headphone jack, the company has adopted many other design elements from Apple, with curved edges, rounded rear antenna bands, a dual camera complete with Portrait Mode, and a "Slate Gray" or "Midnight Black" casing. In fact, The Verge called it "a slightly smaller iPhone 7 Plus that runs Android."

The OnePlus 5, which is priced starting at $479 for 64GB of storage, features a 5.5-inch AMOLED display, a high-end Snapdragon 835 processor, up to 8GB RAM, fast charging, haptic feedback, a 16-megapixel wide-angle camera, a 20-megapixel telephoto camera, and a 16-megapixel front-facing camera.

Who the hell makes this Phone? Never heard of them lol but they mock apple lol

I'm all for mocking Apple's removal of the headphone jack (and their decision to include WIRED headphones with the iPhone 7, and still keep the headphone jack on the iPad/Mac).
Agreed!

Wow did they just copy and paste the iPhone 7 Plus design (but with a headphone jack)
Yes. But that is exactly what many consumers said they wanted: the iPhone 7plus, but with a headphone jack.

Apple could afford to take the risk of removing the headphone jack and still not lose sales. The only competitor that the same might be true for would be Samsung. Everyone else has too low of margins and not enough unit sales to be able to take the same chance and not be ruined financially.

Did he really say something you'll never see matches the outside design as if it made sense?

Apparently OnePlus was caught cheating on benchmarks again, XDA has a writeup with a big headline saying Do NOT Trust Benchmarks of the OnePlus whatever this is.

All I want is headphones that have more than 2 channels, and be able to do something like a pseudo-surround sound system.

For that the 3.5mm jack is obsolete.
You've only got two ears, so you only need two channels for your headphones.

In room speakers are a different story, because of how your head affects your hearing-- but if you're injecting audio directly into the ear canal, you've only got two inputs so the phone only needs two outputs...

It looks like the iPhone 7 because it is a black, featureless slab with a horizontal dual camera on the back. Camera hump is there because the camera module is too thick. Same solution to the same problem. They could have mounted the camera vertically but then they would have been accused of copying the iPhone 8.

Apple's phones have been quite generic since the iPhone 6.

So now Apple is material for comedians. That's pretty big writing on the wall Cooky.
