LOL! Its not budget phone just like SE was never a budget phone.
It used design from previous flagship generation and this will probably be just like iPhone 8 so where is the budget omg?
It will probably sell really well for various reasons. For me, I hate OLED, notch, FaceID and the price tag of 11Pro so this will be the perfect upgrade for me. Touch ID, one hand usage, latest A chip + much cheaper = AWESOME!

the bubble is on your end, not ours :p

Apple is not going to make a low priced ($400-ish) iPhone that uses design elements from its thousand dollar flagship. When is anyone going to realize this.

Sorry to burst everyones bubble but itll look like an iphone 8 with a cheaper price tag and beefed up internals , like they did with the SE a few years ago. Its not going to have a stainless chassis and frosted glass back. Good grief.

ITS A BUDGET PHONE

Will they ever create something new for a smaller form factor and quit milking the iPhone 6? Enough already! Cook is stingier with new tooling than he is with employee working conditions in China. It was already showing its age since the iPhone 7, where the ONLY change was the courageous headphone jack removal.

To all apologists out there: no, just because it still sells, and just because it's meant to be the "budget" option does NOT excuse this level of expedient laziness and complacency. It's still Apple, for crying out loud.

I wonder if Dieter Bonn would call that a "parts-bin" phone and not "the best iPhone for most people".
I would immediately fire Tim Cook and put Dieter in charge. His expertise and training and overall acumen would make Apple the company we deserve.

You are clearly not understanding the context of my comment or didn't read it fully. The "rumor" is that this new BUDGET iPhone will use stainless steel and frosted glass like the iPhone 11 Pro does. Im taking issue with that nonsense because Apple will never do that......not with the existence of a budget iPhone.

So yeah you're right....itll be an iPhone 8 design.....which is what I said.

read and re-read.....comprehension is key! ;)

You do have to ask why Apple continues to milk customers with thick bezel phones while competitors are offering full screen phones even in their low-end models.
Anecdotal evidence says that a good portion of Apple customers either don't care about or aren't bothered by large bezels.
Note the combined percentage of small bezel phone activations vs large bezel phone activations.

I would immediately fire Tim Cook and put Dieter in charge. His expertise and training and overall acumen would make Apple the company we deserve.
Wait. You would trade in a CEO who shepherded the company to historic levels for... well, for anyone really? We actually know what Cook has done. Any imaginary better replacement would be hard pressed to come close to replicated Cooks success. Never mind bettering it.

this phone makes a LOT of sense from a fiscal and consumer stand point.

it's cheap(for Apple) and covers the bases. is ita "parts bin" phone? Sure. But for a lot of people that is enough.

this is the type of phone I buy my Niece for her 16th birthday.

From a business standpoint, one of Apple's biggest "gaps" has been "low end" devices. They for over a decade has yielded the "budget" sector to Android because of their own Hubris.

While it may run into some barriers to sales (it's not the latest look/feel from Apple, but just a rehash of their 6-8 series appearance). There will be more than enough people who are just looking to buy an iPhone for simplistic sakes and this may be just the phone they want.

this is no SE replacement. This is more just the 8s. But there is nothing wrong with that. Apple needs to expand their market outside of the premium category and a budget version of the iPhone will do that

The company stock reached historic levels through successive buybacks, for sure. As for the actual products, other than a couple of flagships, their industrial design is hopelessly long in the tooth, with some wonky attention grabbers here and there like the TouchBar, and their respective OS choices are haphazard, buggy and convoluted. I don't know about Dieter per se but yea, I miss having a detailed product minded individual who prioritises design & engineering on the helm.

It won’t be good enough for people here.
Eh, you make it sound like anyone who isn't thrilled by this phone is a whiner. I'd argue there is another contingent in this case: people who actually wanted an SE replacement. I have relatives who have SE's, and they'd love to upgrade - to a modern iPhone in the approximate size of the original SE - they're frustrated by the size of iPhones from the 6 onwards (including the current 8 and this upcoming 9/8S/SE2, not to mention the X and beyond). It's not the money that keeps them away from newer iPhones, it's the size - they think my iPhone 8 is too big.

I think there's still a legit case for a phone closer to the iPhone SE, with updated internals - this doesn't have to mean triple cameras, FaceID and edge-to-edge OLED displays. Just current production (vs. a discontinued phone) and more modern A-series chips, in something closer to the 5/SE size, rather than the 6/7/8 size.

I agree. This will be a great upgrade for my teenage son who is currently on a 7+. He does not need a $1000 phone.

I hope the name iPhone 9 isn't correct. Marketing wise, why would a customer even look at an iPhone 9 when the current phone is an iPhone 11. I think most people (not on here) just look at the name and not specs.

They’re selling the 8 and 11 currently

If this phone does indeed turn out to be an upgraded iPhone 8, I'll pass. I really would have liked a return of the smaller SE form factor. But if this is what we're getting, I'll just wait for the new 5.7" iPhone this fall. It's only slightly bigger than the 8 and will have much better tech.

They pretty much are. It’s never what these guys want and Apple just keeps moving, so they are the vocal minority.

It is correct. iPhone 7, iPhone 8, iPhone 9. All of those are successors. They deliberately skipped 9 prior when they released the 8 and the X (10) same year. This was the planned phone to fill that gap.

yes, going backwards is an awesome plan. like the kind of awesome plan when you totally f-up and pretend like this is what you intended to do. i hope apple are smarter than that, although judging by their naming convention insanity, i probably shouldn't.

Because people buy them and iOS is a lot better than Android. An iPhone is as much software as it is hardware, if not more.

While for others it’s another case of Apple can do no wrong. Can’t be made better. Best execution ever. Lol

fwiw I think it’s fine. Great phone for those needing a budget one or kids. Not much to see here. It’s an 8S basically. Just boring though.
They do have the best execution ever, so there’s that.
