I hope the name iPhone 9 isn't correct. Marketing wise, why would a customer even look at an iPhone 9 when the current phone is an iPhone 11. I think most people (not on here) just look at the name and not specs.

I would think people would look at it the same as all the people currently buying the iPhone 8, it's not the replacement for the 11?

They are going to sell a ton of these if they hit the $399 starting price. Not everyone needs or wants a huge phone with an edge to edge screen and multiple camera lenses nor wants to pay $1k for a phone (even if they can afford it).

I'm still not seeing how this is a great deal with the iPhone 8 as a direct competitor. Phone's look identical, display is the same, battery will probably be slightly larger on the 9, cameras are better, and processor, but you lack 3D touch, and you can probably get the iPhone 8 for another $200 cheaper at this point.

The SE worked because it was extremely cheap (same cost as used or new older generation iPhone's), and the same as the 5S but better. The 9 to the 8 is chunkier, loses 3D touch, and is likely more expensive.
Apple lost a lot of potential buyers with loosing 3D Touch on this device.

I'll probably get one *if* it has eSIM/Dual SIM (which is really the only feature I'm missing on my 8 as someone who travels a lot internationally) and isn't significantly bigger or heavier than the 8. I have no use for 3-eyed cameras etc. and don't like the added weight and/or bulk of the new higher-end iPhones.

had that been the case the wouldn't have called the current model "11" it would've been "XI" :)
and introducing 9 after 11 is a terrible plan imho.

Oh you're right. I thought they were calling it the XI, but it looks like the official name is the 11. They probably changed their plan after seeing the "iPhone Ex" fail. You're right it's not the smartest, and I wouldn't have done it that way either. However it's hard to see how they can just keep making unique names like iPhone SE, year after year - for the alternative lineup. Maybe just call it the iPhone C and stick to it?

in fact the only people calling them "iphone ten" and "iphone ten s" are apple employees :)
everyone else calls them "x" and "xs")

honestly, the most fool proof way would be calling them iphone 2020, 20201 and so on. or perhaps '20, '21. unfortunately it's a very unattractive naming convention))

I think this will be just like the SE - meaning, it will be a refresh over the 8, which I am sure Apple will discontinue after the 9 is released. New processor, perhaps bigger battery, perhaps better camera, plus a longer lifespan for future iOS updates. I think a huge number of average consumers will buy it.

As for 3D touch, I know a crap ton of average consumers and not one of them knows about or uses 3D touch. They couldn't care less and I think most average consumers won't care either.

Newer CPU, bigger battery, better camera, low price point = sales success.

Due for an upgrade right now. Currently on iphone X. Got offered Iphone 11 pro for a like for like contract. But its damn ugly.
I would buy this phone. It looks great.

Looks like a cross between the iPhone 7 and X. This might very well be a day one purchase for me. Something I haven’t done for many years.

iPhone 9? That caught me off guard. I thought we were already on iPhone 11 now...this naming system...
Its in a series of similar design, 6-7-8-9.

Interesting, where are all the people that were complaining about big for heads and chins on the Pixel and other Android devices. I guess when Apple does it it's ok
Those people are generally tech savvy people (ie. fanboys) and youtube reviewers who are out of touch with regular consumers.

If this phone does indeed turn out to be an upgraded iPhone 8, I'll pass. I really would have liked a return of the smaller SE form factor. But if this is what we're getting, I'll just wait for the new 5.7" iPhone this fall. It's only slightly bigger than the 8 and will have much better tech.
It's actually rumored to be 5.4"

It's going to be called iPhone 9 for not confusing the other model. Only a fullscreen version of SE can be called SE-II

Can't really tell from the rumors if I should be excited or not about this phone. Should know in about 2 months.

"A pickup truck won't be good enough for people looking for a sedan."
The part that's starting to concern me is that Apple might think that the only that matters is price. In other words, people want a sedan because it's cheap, so if they build a pickup and price it like a sedan, people will buy it.

Anecdotal evidence says that a good portion of Apple customers either don't care about or aren't bothered by large bezels.
Note the combined percentage of small bezel phone activations vs large bezel phone activations.

This. I do like small bezels, but not at the cost of functionality. For me (not everyone) TouchID is the superior tech. I would much rather have the large bezel and TouchID on the front than not. I'll be tempted to upgrade my aging 6S to this when it launches. The only thing missing will be the headphone jack which I would still like to have.

Touch ID works best for my family as well. My daughters rock 7's. I was going to upgrade them to 8's for Xmas but they didn't want new phones. Touch ID is the preferred security method for us because my wife and I can each register a fingerprint on their phones. Older iPhones are great bargains.

Looks good, I am sure it will be a great phone for a lot of people. Since iPhone's last the longest and are generally held onto for years, I think this fills a nice spot.
