Given that 10.6.2 is now being seeded... I would think that this release would be needed for the release of the new machines? No? Possibility of new graphics cards and drivers and of course new model identifiers?

Could the new iMacs and Mac Minis actually be 1 to 2 weeks away due to a 10.6.2 requirement?

The first Mac Mini i got... which was a 1.5GHz PowerPC was shipped with 10.4.2

The first MacBook Pro i got... 2.4Ghz (Early 2008) was shipped with 10.5.2

A pattern?

Could be. I wouldn't be surprised if the updates don't use any new components (no Nehalem or new GPUs). Especially the MacBook and Mac mini as they are 1/2 to 1 generation behind anyway.

Tomorrow, Tomorrow...they'll be new Macs tomorrow.... it's only a day away....

well, tomorrow or Wednesday...or next week....

sometime this month.....;)

I agree... except i'm certain the Mac Mini wont be using 9400M anymore... and iMac definitely wont be using it. That leaves only the 9600M GT which seems a bit unlikely for the Mac Mini. So i'm not so sure that we will get away with 10.6.1

Then again I could be totally wrong.

I want to see updates this week... but will we? Hmmmmm.

I don't know where you get that idea. I would almost bet the farm that two things will NOT happen: there won't be quad core processor updates and there WILL continue to be 9400's in both computers.

I wouldn't be so quick with that farm. If Apple follows their average pattern, this will be the model they are still selling into April of next year.

That's REALLY late for a Core 2 Duo to still be offered in their main desktop line, imo.

Quad core and Blu-Ray will come out together and that is not going to happen in this update. Look for both of them next year, late first quarter.

There will not be any new quad core cpu in the late first quarter that is not available now.

There only will be Arrandale dual core quad thread processors.

Your guess is no better than anyone else's. So unless you are personal buddies with El Jobso I would back off on the divine proclomation.

Actually, I have known both Jobs and Gates since 1976/77, but I don't claim any special insight into Apple's plans other than 30 years experience with the company. We shall see who is right soon enough.

It's kind of funny going back and looking at the starting prices for the Power Macintosh/Mac Pro line.

Since Jobs has returned:

Power Macintosh G3 (Blue & White) started at $1599.
Power Macintosh G4 (Gigabit Ethernet) started at $1599.
Power Macintosh G4 (Digital Audio) started at $1699.
Power Macintosh G4 (Quicksilver) started at $1699.
Power Macintosh G4 (Quicksilver 2002) started at $1599.
Power Macintosh G4 (Mirrored Drive Doors) started at $1699.
Power Macintosh G4 (Firewire 800) started at $1499.

<- Death of the mid-priced consumer tower->

Power Macintosh G5 started at $1999.
Power Macintosh G5 (June 2004) started at $1999.

<- Oops. Let's try it again. ->

Power Macintosh G5 (Early 2005) started at $1499.

<- Death of the mid-priced consumer tower, again.->

Power Macintosh G5 (Late 2005) started at $1999.
Mac Pro started at $2499.
Mac Pro (Early 2008) started at $2799.
Mac Pro (Early 2009) starts at $2499.

Bring back the $1599 consumer tower! :D

I don't know jobs or gates.

Here is what I do know. A chassis change seems likely for the iMac. I also know that chassis redesigns almost always happen in the fall followed by minor refresh in the spring.

Lastly and most importantly I know that there isn't a quad core that could replace a c2d without a motherboard change that would work in the iMac.

Therefor I think your hpothesis is unlikely. F there will be quad it will probably happen now or a year frm now, not in the spring when sales are down.

Amen. Heck, anything sub-$2k

iMac: Ultra Thin 20 & 24 inch models. From only € 1099. Apple Store

Well that is NOT good news. Ultra Think = Less Space = Probably no quad core.
Still overpriced and still in the cpu dark ages.

This company really sucks:mad:

The only high end machine they have got is the MacPro. That is almost 3 times the price of a Core I7 pc with similare specs and performance.

It's about time they came up with a mid to high end product other than the macpro. I have been hoping for years that the Imac would be that product, but these rumors are not uplifting.:( The imac is thin enough as it it! What it needs is speed and more cores!

I wonder why apple keeps on holding the potencially great Imac in the low end hardware gutter. It's in imminent need of a major cpu quad core / core I7 transplant:eek:

Steve's childish attitude. He gets a weird notion based on some truth, and dismisses all data that's contrary.

The company is just like a cult. The people around him support his plans out of love and fear of the man. I believe Apple will do much better after he leaves. Those inside the cult think they would die without him.

Was in my local Apple store again today, (genius bar appointment for iphone). casually mentioned to the guy serving me that I was awaiting the release of the new iMac sometime soon. He just smiled and said "shouldn't be long".

Thats twice in a week someone from that store has confirmed to me its happening and quite soon.

Like I've said before hopefully won't be long but who knows with Apple. :):)
Well the truth is that the "genius" you spoke to doesn't know squat about Apple plans, he's probably sitting at home (or at work) reading macrumors.com as we speak.

Hi Genius! So, you know stuff about the new iMacs, huh? Oh? No? Not really? Didn't think so...

LOL...wasn't Apple near death when he came back and then immediately the iMac gave Apple life again? I HIGHLY doubt the company will be better without Jobs. I know a lot of people here want a mid-end tower but given how the industry has shifted toward notebooks, I'm not sure it's a great idea.

ANYWAY...what are the chances of the new Macbook getting the multitouch trackpad? I'm hell bent on a 13" MBP in the near future but with the Macbook getting a refresh and probably being put closer to the MBP spec-wise, it may be smarter to go with the Macbook. I'm not really a power user anyway and I'm on a limited budget. I have to get a notebook soon because my current one (HP) is a buggy mess now.
