I just want the Apple Store to be down today!

yeah meee tooooooo.

sadly I don't think it's going to happen :(
And if the GPU isn't upgraded (likely) then I am going to hit someone. (probably myself - for waiting so long for an upgrade which didn't happen)

Unless there is some new software to demo along with releasing new hardware, the only way there will be an event is if there is a new way to "narrate" the "mac story".

What's rumored to come out seems a bit disparate to "narrate" something.

In 2007 it took exactly 9 minutes to introduce the current iMac and keyboard - including the compulsory berating of the competition, brand new materials, and new size configuration.

Multitouch by this point is nothing inherently new, so I imagine a forthcoming introduction for an iMac including a new mouse would take no more than 9 minutes.

What could they say about a new thinner plastic macbook? 2 minutes top.

Same with the Mac Mini.

So we'd have a 30 minute event including a 10 minute presentation on "state of the Mac"

Doesn't seem likely.

The story for the October 2008 event was "a new way to build notebooks". Every other mac release since the disjointed "fun" event in 2006 was either at WWDC, MWSF, or a silent release.

No new story or software? No event.

With Windows 7 shipping in a few weeks you would think Apple would really try to steal their thunder with this refresh.

Slick newly redesigned iMacs with lower prices work great at the entry level but they also should be offering high performance iMacs also.

They can always suck it up with lower margins in the short term, analysts have speculated that they might take lower margin on these machines and make it up with the large profits on iPhone.

Damn, that's some pretty impressive reasoning.

And although what jmpage2 is saying would be nice.... I think it will probs only be a price drop for the mini :(

who said it was a complete redesign? if it's only thinner, why would there be an event for that. I remember the new intel Macbooks didn't get an even. White and black and complete redesign, NO event.
So far rumors have implied the following regarding the iMac:
  1. A new "Cinema Display"-ish design
  2. LED display
  3. New processors
  4. Cheaper
Sure, if any of 2-4 would happen there prolly wont be an event, however it's likely that ALL could happen which surely would justify an event, especially when there seems to be a new Mini, new keyboard and new mouse coming our way.

There's definitely gonna be an event where they present,
A new iMac
A new Mac mini
A new keyboard and mouse

The event will happen 13th or 20th.

If they are having an event on the 13th the invites have to go out today. If they have an event on the 20th there are going to be no iMacs left to sell to customers for a week.

With rumors that the new machines have been coming off of assembly for weeks this delay seems hard to believe.

I don't think so:
1st, adverts have implied that all that may be happening to the imac is it will get thinner, and the keyboard and mouse are just becoming seemingly more consistent with the current design. Also, apple have already had a big event: the "it's only rock and roll" and maybe they won't want to have it overshadowing a computer-based event.

Agreed. There will not be an event for this..Basically= iMac refresh, Mini refresh, new keyboard and mouse (WHOOPI! ;-)

Wait, so many refreshes AND whoopi?

I'm not looking forward to this update!

The keyboard and mouse updates: The mouse is rumoured to be made from aluminium. This would suggest that it is not so much trying to create a new range, but to make it look more compatible with the current range of aluminium models

The mouse is rumored multi-touch. No one out there has a multi-touch mouse. And we just saw glimpses of working concepts from Microsoft the other day. Depending on the complexity of the mouse it could easily be something to talk about.

The keyboard is what intrigues me the most...what could have possibly warranted them making such minimal changes to the size. I simply don't buy them just making it mm smaller or removing keys or making it black ...I'm just on the mindset that something bigger had to be have been changed about that keyboard. Not to mention how quickly apple pulled down those images from the fcc of just the outlines of the products. That doesn't seem like just some aesthetic change in accessories.

Please explain to me what seemingly more consistent with the current line up means to you? They already have a tiny aluminum keyboard, and just changing the mouse to aluminum seems pointless. On top of the rumors for multi-touch patents for keyboards they have filed and the obvious counter from Microsoft that says hey we got this stuff too, I have trouble dismissing this as just some minimal design change.

Event or no event doesn't matter to me...I'm just curious to know what they are doing with those accessories.

oh yeah, I had forgotten about multi touch. That could be a really big concept, so the event idea may well be correct. The keyboard mystifies me: the only thing I can think of is if it needed to be minutely smaller to fit inside some new packaging method for the product.
Yeah- I can't wait to find out about what's going on either!

It could be as simple as packaging change.

That's only $1,000 more than an HP6130y. I guess that's a step in the right direction.

http://www.amazon.com/HP-Pavilion-P...4?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1254832806&sr=8-1

Well, Core i7 PC towers start at around $750, so add $1,000 for the "Apple premium" and round up to match Apple's everything ends in 99 pricing and presto you have the new mid-priced consumer tower at $1799.

I would still buy it instead of an iMac, if I had the choice. Having to disassemble an entire iMac (complete with removing electrical shielding) just to replace a dead hard drive will turn you off the iMac line for good. Even the G3 and G4 iMac lines were easier to disassemble than the new Intel models. Of course, the G5 was the easiest of them all (beautifully laid out inside) so I guess it's not entirely impossible to create an iMac that's easy to service.

You think they shaved off that little amount just for packaging? Does that actually make sense to you? Think of the costs involved to manufacture a product like that, and if they were to change the packaging don't you think they'd simply fit it around the current model.

Now if you are implying they changed the packaging to show people how to use a multi-touch keyboard and mouse...sure thats possible. But if you were first to market with a fully touch based full-size keyboard, with a patent that allows the input to pick up where your hands are and put a virutal keyboard around them, that you would simply just explain that in packaging? That's not the type of revolutionary technology you don't make a big show about.

Which means its not happening, but it would be cool. And yes I don't think there will be an event and it will be just minor changes if any.

They can still have the event the 20th, there are still iMacs in stock (except for amazon.com). Although I'd bet on the 13th.

I could see why Apple would put a silent update on their website if it would only affect the iMac, but we're talking about Mini and maybe even macbook.

And sure, the keyboard isn't that much big of a deal, but if the new mouse offers multi touch (as rumored) they would wanna show it off, dont u think?

So based on,
new imac
new mac mini
updated macbook (white)
multi touch mouse

we'll see an event. And since the dust from 'It's only rock and roll' has settled I don't wee why that would overshadow this event.

But of course, I could be wrong. As could you.

yeah, you're probably right, they wouldn't release so much stuff without an event. Then again, I'm surprised we haven't heard any rumours about an upcoming event. But why does everyone think they will come out between the 7th and 9th when the likely date for an event is 13th?

I don't really know.... I mean, so many of the rumours could be wrong or slightly misinformed that it's really difficult trying to work out a date, when we don't even know what's being released.... (please better gpu, please better gpu, please better gpu.....)

(wow, that sounded really wierd)

Rumors have said mid-october and 6th isn't mid, 13th or 20th could be mid.

apparently (this is from using google news search) macbooks and imacs will be restocked (seeing as they are rather thin on the ground right now) between october 7th and 9th. Which suggests that they will release new ones at that time rather than any other, as re-stocking directly before a product update would not be the most intelligent idea.

EDIT: also, apparently, apple stores have received new signage with orders not to open it untill further notice: possibly big posters of new products??? (p.s. info comes from mirror.co.uk and I don't claim that this is a 100% verified truth....)

Now that I see MS is leaking prototype multi-touch mice I am re-thinking my position on this.

If Apple introduces a multi-touch capable mouse/keyboard then there will be an event. It would be a revolutionary tech change and would require a full event.

Want an inside view of MS PR ?

Whenever MS sees Apple rumors about new high tech potentially groundbreaking devices MS PR puts together "Demo videos" of what MS has coming out. They do this to try and overshadow Apple technology. Then after Apple comes out with the device MS gets one and breaks it down part by part and tries to emulate it.

wow, that is one mightily sneaky little move by microsoft, but I suppose being seen to be technologically behind your main competition in the computer business would be a real issue. Does this happen the other way round (with microsoft products being nicked by apple?)
