Yes, I'd like to see a discussion on resolutions and PPIs.

You said it would deliver nearly-identical PPI with 1280x720 @ 4.7" - that would be 312 vs current 326. This drop isn't a lot although it would mildly surprise me that Apple would drop it even slightly.

Why? They completely dropped common sense and usability with iOS7, so... ;)

As long as they don't keep changing the aspect ratio, I suppose it wouldn't matter too much.. they could just scale existing images, which would could be as easy as a single click. . . or not at all, if they don't increase the resolution.

Wireless earbuds are really a terrible idea. Who the hell could keep track of them?

I've had wireless earbuds for years (JayBird BlueBuds and Sprints) and I love them and carry them with me everywhere. They're pretty expensive though.

When you start increasing phone size like that - I'm not sure "scaling" is the best method for the best UI.

Too bad "foldable" screens don't exist either. And by foldable - I mean paper this and can fold/unfold automagically to give you various screen sizes :)

It's not scaling in the typical sense. It's just like the iPad Mini and iPad...On the iPad it's larger by default but the developer only has to code for 1 resolution. So whatever the math is for the iPhone, expect the size to be something that scales up accordingly from the current size.

This is no surprise. Apple is extremely insecure and fearful of including a display larger than 4.7"

They've programmed their flock that one handed usage is the holy grail. That's it's not about functionality, but how a tiny phone is easier to put in your pocket. Apple now fears alienating the users that have bought into Apples company line.

If more people cared about efficiency and usage, instead of vanity and aesthetics, iPhone's would not be trailing the wonderfully useful Android phones. Fortunately Google "gets it" and supplies the market with a highly useful operating system so the handset makers can provide stellar smartphones. Nothing beats variety and choices.

I love the way my Android phones integrate so easily with my Macs. It's an excellent match.

I'm a 6'6 guy with larger hands and I've extensively used phones with screen sizes of 3.5, 4.0, and 5.0. I didn't mind the increase from 3.5 to 4.0 at all, but using a 5.0 screen feels unwieldy to me. To each his own, and I know that there will be different optimal sizes for different people, but I don't understand the appeal of the 5 inch + phones to anyone. They are too big to do typical phone tasks well and too small to do typical tablet tasks well. They compromise on both ends in order to create a poor mans phablet who doesn't want to buy both.

Personally I don't know what would be my ideal size would be but I know that it's somewhere between 4.0 and 4.7. Also, I believe the actual size of the device is more meaningful than the screen size. If Apple can increase screen size by using sapphire and going edge to edge without increasing the size of the phone very much then that will be a huge improvement in my opinion.

Pretty much what I was thinking too. Apple tends towards incremental changes of existing products: iPad and iPad mini for example. Introducing 3 iPhone screen sizes seemed out of the pattern.

That's a good one. You know the majority of those shipped units are returned to sender if they don't sell....meaning Samsung has to take them all back if the end retailer doesn't sell them.

Did you see the last several quarterly reports? He's correct in saying they sell more overall. You can lie on those reports.

I think the "2 sizes" rumor is coming from Apple keeping the 4" and adding a 4.7" But people took it to mean 4.7" and then something bigger. I could see them keeping the 4" size for one more year for those are aren't ready to move on and release a 4.8" for those who are. then phase out the 4" after a year when all those users see how wonderful the extra real estate is. :D Just kidding on that last part I know people have their preferences...... I personally think 4.7" or 4.8" would be the sweet spot.

Perhaps I am not being logical - but again - that doesn't seem like the best way to utilize the larger screen. Easy and quick way to "upscale" perhaps to the new size. But to truly use and benefit from the added real estate, you would want/need more than a formula to upsize.

I've got small hands, guys. This has caused me to skip the iPhone 5 and 5s, hoping they'll make a size similar to my 4s (and that mine won't break before then...). Please Apple, give us small-handed people who rely on our iPhones a chance to survive. I'd be forever grateful !!

I wouldn't count on it...

Yes. But also, I would expect Apple to really come out with some new innovation in this field, if they were to really release something like this.

@Ryth
Hey, people lose wired earbuds every day.
If you mean lose them in the couch, or something? Crank up the volume, and play a song; "Hey, there they are...".

Not, it's really not. Having one device on the go to be productive is a great advantage that many people want. Phones do way more than just make calls now days.

The thing is, most people don't need to be "productive" on their phone. I also like the idea of a big screen but in reality it's not all that great. Every time I use a big screen phone I wonder what it actually ads to the experience that compensates for the practical downsides (weight, looks ridiculous in your jeans (or doesn't even fit!) etc.).
And the fact that you can actually, comfortably, use an iPhone with one hand really IS a big plus. Try that with a 5" phone..

And I honestly question the premise that people really want those big phones. They only people I see with them are mostly tech junkies. People who want nice specs. If you want top specs with an Android you are forced into buying the huge screen models. A small screen Android phone with top specs would be, imho, a gigantic sales hit. So yeah, the big phones are somewhat of a self fulfilling prophecy.
Other people have iPhones or smaller android phones.

Why is it that EVERY SINGLE FRICKING YEAR, analysts always bring the June/July release rumor out when Apple has not strayed from it since they moved to September?

To make it seem that they are so clever and deserve their salary. Must be a dream job.

I have a 5" phone - not sure I'd go bigger - but I love the real estate on it. It affords me much easier reading of websites, apps, books, lists, easier to type, etc.

For me, 5" is a sweet spot. I could never go back to a 3.5 or 4" screen. Way too tiny.

Most people I know want larger screens because it makes most phone interactions easier and feels better. Phones like the Xperia Z1 compact don't sell as well as the "full" versions.

Hmmm

I was really hoping for 5.5. I think many Mac users who say they don't need a 5.5 iPhone are being hypocritical because many of them say they'd like an iPadMini you could make calls on and that's what a 5.5 would offer and the size would be more practical than an iPadMini.

Either release a 5.5 phone or make the iPadMini capable of real phone calls please.

You do realize Samsung has released a very popular line of Galaxy Note phones that are larger then 4.7 and even 5.5. Please realize its Apple that is catching up to the "size" game, not Samsung. Apple is losing market to the much more varied and wider assortment of Samsung phones because Samsung realized a long time ago that one size does not fit all as Apple has forced on consumers.

Even if there is no individual Samsung model that outsells the iPhone, Samsung typically ships more phones overall then Apple does every quarter and it is due to understanding that the market values variety more then conformity.

Successful where and in which market? I could now make a few offensive/semi-funny remarks about Europeans and kids from the trailer park. But I'll leave that to real comedians. In my neck of the woods the iPhone has replaced the BlackBerry as a tool for professionals. I'd like to keep it that way. If Apple sees a need to cater to gamers and such they either need another device or risk losing people like me. One of my gripes with the iPhone 5 is that it is slightly too big already (and too thin and light). The form factor of the 4 was better (BB was ideal). So, please let's hope Apple doesn't turn into a complete toy maker.

I'm just looking forward to all the people praising how amazing their phone's display is and how they can see everything so much better and that it just makes perfect sense to use a phone "this" size. It might be fun to then then cross-reference those praises to those who mocked Android phone sizes and complain about their pockets or holding up an iPad to their ear to make a call.
