They are gonna make devs angry by changing screen size so often...

3 screen sizes (amongst iPhones) to develop for is infinitely easier than the myriad of android screen sizes and resolutions. I am expecting auto-layout to get a big overhaul at WWDC this year to help ease the pain of additional screen sizes.

an "iPhone 6" is most likely to come in August or September, rather than June

An iPhone hasn't been released in June since 2010, so why the "rather than"? I would expect it in Sept or October as that's become the norm.

I'm just looking forward to all the people praising how amazing their phone's display is and how they can see everything so much better and that it just makes perfect sense to use a phone "this" size. It might be fun to then then cross-reference those praises to those who mocked Android phone sizes and complain about their pockets or holding up an iPad to their ear to make a call.

Good idea. I think you and Renzatic should start working on the data base now before it gets out of hand. After the flip flop when someone inevitably says that no one ever made such a claim the facts will be right there. :D:D:D

Yes and it's 4.7. Don't we already know it.
5.5 is a bait for samsung to launch their S6 in the larger size and fail.

Meanwhile, Analysts be like -

See if you would get out of your Apple bubble, you would know that comment has already been proven false.

Many don't want a 5.5" phone.
Apple aren't doing a 5.5" phone.
Simple.

Hi Tim. Oh wait...you're not Tim, so you don't have a clue what Apple is doing. lol

Since when has Samsung needed bait from Apple to fail? ;)

Since when is Samsung failing?

"I felt a great disturbance in the Force, as if millions of voices suddenly cried out in terror and were suddenly silenced. I fear something terrible has happened."

That seems to be the response here when someone's iPhone gets a hairline scratch only visible at a certain angle. :D

Samsung already released a 5.5 inch smartphone back in 2012, The Galaxy Note 2, it was a success.

Shhhh some don't kindly to the truth. :D

But yes, you are right. It's nice to see someone on here who actually knows what they're talking about.

I have an LG G2 and an iPod Touch 5 (same 4" screen as iPhone 5S). The iPod is for gym use but once I'm using the G2 again it's such a relief because the screen is so much easier to see and use.

So I totally have no issue with a 5"+ phone and hope Apple does release two sizes. Choice is good.

So they will do everything possible to minimise any disruption to their app ecosystem, while trying to cater the market demands of course.

Apple changed the aspect ratio...

Apple changed the pixel density...

Do you wish those thing never happened so it wouldn't have been such a pain for developers?

No...I wish people would read things properly before commenting

Absolutely ridiculous! It's like holding an iPad mini up to your head lol

That's not a tablet, that's Samsung's new "Galaxy Smart TV Pocket®"

>_<

----------

Different screen sizes wouldn't be so much of a problem if iOS provided a better layout management system...

You've not fiddled around with Android SDK, by the sounds of things... you think Xcode needs improving? Okay...

----------

I did some calculations and at 4.5" 720p would have exact same PPI as current iPhone, so my money is on 4.5" screen.

I just did some "calculations" (which means I looked at my Moto G screen), and I can safely say that 4.5" @ 720p is lovely :p

No...I wish people would read things properly before commenting

My point was... Apple has ALREADY made disruptions to their app ecosystem.

And the world kept turning...

If... somehow... developers were able to survive a screen aspect ratio change and a screen resolution change... anything else in the future shouldn't be a big deal either.

By "one-handed" you are actually saying "one-thumbed"

If you only use a phone with one hand... your palm and 4 finger must hold the device... and you interact with the screen using only your thumb.

Well guess what... the iPhone is an amazing pocket computer. I will use as many fingers as I possibly can!!!

Pinching and zooming... tapping with 2 or 3 fingers in some apps... there is waaay more you can do than with just one thumb.

Honestly... "one-handed" is nowhere near the top of my wish list.

Dumbest comment I've read so far:

Listen; sometimes (actually, quite often) your thumb is "as many fingers as you possibly can".
Hell, to think I couldn't hold a cup of coffee in one hand and navigate my "computer" at the same time… I don't even see the point of having pocket computer in that case. Why even bother? Just give me an iPad.

All I was saying is... "one-handed use" is not what I base my smartphone purchases on.

I already prefer to use 2 hands with my iPhone... landscape keyboard being the primary reason.

Ironically... the iPhone's small size makes the portrait keyboard a little too uncomfortable for me.

So while the iPhone's small size is supposed to make it easy to use with one hand... it actually has the opposite effect on me.

YMMV

Just stop

I get it. You're just trying to have fun by predicting and guessing apples new hardware. Like building your own thingamajig. Just stop pretending that your guess has any merit. It's pure guess work and it doesn't mean anything.

Ponder this: "My view continues to be that iPhone 5 has the absolute best display in the industry," Cook said on a postearnings call with investors. "Our competitors have made trade-offs to ship a larger display. We will not ship a larger display iPhone while these trade-offs exist." - Tim Cook :apple:

That might be why apple is switching to sapphire?

I remember back in the day on these forums when people swore by the 3.5" phone saying they never want anything bigger and they wouldn't buy anything bigger. People swore Apple would never make a phone with a screen larger than 3.5" blah blah blah.

There are many who want a larger phone. Apple should be about more choices. I'd buy a 5.5" iPhone in a heartbeat, I want a large screen, biggest I can get on a phone. I'm 6'2" and have large hands, holding my iPhone 5 is awkward when I type.

My girlfriend, on the other hand, loves her 5S and wouldn't want a bigger screen. The point is we should have choices. 4.7" is better than nothing, but I want that 5.5" phone, and hopefully we get some notice prior to launches, cause if I sign a new 2 year deal for the 4.7" phone and a 5.5" comes out a few months later that'd be crappy of Apple.

I'm one of those people, still I use the 4" iPhone 5s and like it. Still if I had the choice of a 3.5" screen in a smaller package would go for it. I don't think the increase size has really offered that much until you get to iPadMini size.

Absolutely ridiculous! It's like holding an iPad mini up to your head lol

Just give the iPad Mini cellular phone capabilities and voila! All hail the king of phablets!

Seriously I wouldn't mind a 5" (max.) for an iPhone 6. 4.7" vs. 5" isn't really a noticeable difference so either will do.

They are gonna make devs angry by changing screen size so often...

Everyone always says that, but I have a hard time believing that developers will abandon iOS just because Apple is changing screen sizes and resolutions. Sure, iOS may not be the most popular smartphone platform in the world, but it has enough market share to be important and developers actually make money from iOS. I just don't see them giving that up over something like a screen size/resolution change.

isnt that their job i dont see a nurse complaining when they suddenly have to wash a fat person :p (actually i do ... but u get what i mean)

Lol I can relate as I do the same everyday and don't complain because I knew what I was getting into when I chose the profession.

Ironically... the most popular smartphone platform in the world (Android) is made up of tons of different screen sizes, resolutions and even aspect ratios.

Like you said... I don't think Apple could do anything to make iOS developers abandon the platform.

Apple has already changed resolution, aspect ratio and screen size once already... and there wasn't any fallout from that. In fact... Apple's platform grew despite those changes.

I doubt Apple will change the aspect ratio again... so all that's left is resolution and screen size.

But again... I don't think developers will be bothered by it. They know how valuable iOS is to develop for.

iPad Mini, and full size iPads, are already capable of making and receiving real phone calls.
Unless you know something I don't they don't have the native Apple phone app. You don't get an AT&T phone number when you buy a cellular enabled iPad do you? If this is a REAL mobile phone please send me the Apple or carrier link because I would love to have an iPad Mini mobile phone.

Don't tell me about Line, Viber TapaTalk etc because those aren't real phones. Same with Google Voice; Unrealistic if not in US.

I've got small hands, guys. This has caused me to skip the iPhone 5 and 5s, hoping they'll make a size similar to my 4s (and that mine won't break before then...). Please Apple, give us small-handed people who rely on our iPhones a chance to survive. I'd be forever grateful !!

Perhaps you would be better of with a Palm Pixi

I think 4.7" is a pretty decent size. We'll see how it works out. Gotta shrink that bezel.

See, people everyday just let like this article are doing what she's doing. I know because I see it everyday. Now I'm NOT saying doom and gloom for Apple if they don't make a bigger phone. Although, I will come back and buy one if they do. What I am saying though, is the many people do WANT a bigger screen for various reasons.

"Once I started using Swype (an Android keyboard that lets you type without lifting your finger between letters), I actually mastered using the Note one-handed and was texting twice as fast.
