Can't wait.

I've been using the latest Opera 10.5 build on my Mac, and boy am I happy. Way speedier than Chrome or Safari.

Opera's new core, Carakan, is faster than WebKit anyway, and I'm pretty sure that it's included in Opera Mini, too.

And for those who are interested, Jon Hicks designed this interface. You know, the guy who designed the original Firefox logo, the Thunderbird logo, the Miro logo, etc.

Opera drives down the lane, the weakside defense has crowded the lane, Opera drives to the left, up and rejected! <Apple waiving finger a la Mutombo>

They show facebook being used in the demo video, but I didn't think facebook was a static webpage. I didn't think their compression technology worked with AJAX, Javascript, etc. Isn't facebook coded in one of those? (sorry I know next to nothing about web code/technologies so I may be wrong - hope someone can clarify)

I don't think Opera Mini has any core. It is just a display interface to display pages rendered on Opera's servers.

Holy crap! The video comparison is amazing, I hope this makes it past the app patrol and into the store.

Actually, their video demo smells funny. Their iPhone using Safari took nearly a minute to completely load the NY Times website, when mine does it in less than 10 seconds.

Well done Opera

Outstanding performance by Opera mini, makes Safari look like Internet Explorer. I really believe that if this app does not get accepted, that iphone users like myself will be settling with the 'poor man's browser'. Go on Apple, stop behaving like a bunch Nazis and embrace open source, doing so will help you defeat the dark side of the force.

I wonder if it is possible to display flash content, since it renders everything on the server, it may be able to show the animation on the screen, just not actually process the video on the phone itself.

I was wondering the same thing, and even more generally, whether server-side processing could be a way out of the Adobe/Apple Flash impasse.

They are running it on Edge for some reason, look closely at the video.

the differences in rendering speeds are accentuated at slower speeds, so showing it on edge makes opera look wicked fast. if it's accurate, this would be great for those people who don't live in 3G areas...but i would also like to see 3G and wifi comparisons.

Even on Edge I can load it in a little over 20 seconds. Their demo is very suspicious.

I have no doubt that they have a pretty good browser, I just don't trust video demos that can be easily faked. (Yes that does include Apple's as well.)

I don't know. I think Opera have tried to get as much news coverage as possible pre-release so it will make Apple look bad if they reject it.

Yup - same thing with Amazon and the Kindle app for the iPad.

Nice interface, finally a real web browser. Can't wait to see it on a ipad.

Had the same thought - some of those UI elements would be wonderful on the bigger iPad screen.

All this said, if I had to bet I think Apple will reject this...

They're using EDGE to better show of their compression. If they used 3G or WiFi, it would be harder to time.

It does have a core. I'm pretty sure you can turn off page compression (Opera Turbo) too, just like the desktop version.

Opera Turbo has been working great for me (on the desktop version) when I'm on a slow connection. My university's library wireless is overcrowded, and Chrome, FF, and Safari sputter when I try to open the simplest of pages, like Google. Opera displays it without a hitch.

http://www.opera.com/browser/turbo/

If you read here:
Even when Opera Turbo is enabled, encrypted traffic does not go through our compression servers. This means that when you are on a secure Web site, such as your bank's, Opera Turbo bypasses all the traffic and lets you communicate directly.

Apple will not only reject Opera, Jobs will call the programmers lazy, threaten to sue the company, buy it and then relabel the software "Safari." Set your timers for this. ;)

Wow, that's pretty much an a**hole move by Opera Software. If Apple were my company I'd reject the app in about 10 sceonds.

cannot wait for the speed

sounds like great options and speed, only thing, is it landscape capable????

The NSA most certainly does not record everything that happens on the internet. There isn't a database in the world big enough for such a task. lol

That's like the people who think that all of our phones calls are being listened to every day. Like the NSA has 200 million employees sitting on phone tapping devices all day long. lol

Until you actually get a clue about how things like ECHELON work, you should probably refrain from laughing at others.

If I install MacSpeech dictate on my late 2006 MBP I can get it to listen out for predefined keywords and then spring into action when it recognises one - but shhhh, don't tell the NSA, or they might figure out that they don't need to employ 200 million people to physically listen to phone conversations

LMAO! I cannot believe they have a timer on their website! Hilarious! And then a section to guess when it will be approve! Can we say, marketing?
