So, in the past, Microsoft was sued for a little as placing Internet Explorer on all copies of Windows. Now, Apple not only just places Safari on all their copies of Mobile OS, but also restricts placing other browser competitors on it. How can they be exactly allowed this? Can someone fill me in?

Microsoft was considered to have a monopoly due to their share of the OS market. Anti-competitive business practices are usually only illegal if you have a monopoly.

Ppl will flood Steve with mails about Opera. Apple will apprive, just the question: WHEN? :)

They would shoot themselves in the foot doing otherwise.

Unless you elaborate your claims... you are just proving you're just a fan whose job is bsing about everything which may threaten Apple's monopoly...
Then... explain what you mean with "real" web, "full" internet and lack of security because I don't see it...

Actually he's speaking directly from what the article itself states. Reading comprehension is a marvelous thing. Get in on it.

I personally hope they do approve it, but I don't think most people would notice. Outside the world of tech, Opera isn't that well known and I doubt most Apple customers would care either way.

They aren’t promoting their app – it hasn’t been accepted yet so right now there is no app to promote. They are essentially saying to the world “We submitted our app to Apple, now let’s see if they have the guts to accept it.” The timer is the real bully move.
Yes, if an artist did that to me they wouldn’t get in my gallery. As far as promoting their work elsewhere I wouldn’t have a problem at all, but that isn’t what’s going on here.

Just because it has not been accepted yet doesn't mean there isn't an app to promote... take a look at the video. psst..that is an app they are showing off.

I dunno this seems like a pretty good promotion to me. The timer especially, because making it a competition is a fantastic way to get people involved. Hey apple does similar things by promoting their itunes store with competitions to see who buys the nth app or song. That's essentially a timer, although a countdown timer.

The thing that nobody else has mentioned is how much data consumption this will save with the server side rendering..

I travel A LOT and when you are getting charged $8+ per MB while roaming, using Safari to load pages like the NYT shown in the video, it's a very very expensive business!!

If this gets approved, it will save lots of people a lot of money!! I can't wait!

This is a really good point. Also if you get a iPad w/ a 250mb 3G data plan, a compressed website would be very useful! Thanks for pointing this out!

Where is the web page?

Too bad you can't see the web page with all those GUI elements. If there ever was a reason to create a full screen browser with multi-touch gesture controls, the iPhone's limited screen resolution is it. Looks pretty useless to me.

Correct. Ironically, normal business practices are generally anti-competitive. It's only classified as such when you have (basically) no competitors.

It's like Spotify posted a YouTube vid of the app pre-aproval and got people whipped up into a frenzy, only Opera have put a timer to add pressure to Apple to approve it - and fast.

I doubt, however, they will feel pressurised, it's just a way for Opera to show them up.

I think it will be approved. If Spotify, which could have cannibalised iTunes revenue, got approved, this will.

Apple will approve it right after they approve Google Voice. In the meantime, they'll take eternity to "study it"

Translation: Never.

But really what they are doing is trying to make as much noise as possible, attempting to put Apple in a position where they can't reject the app without getting a lot of negative attention. I'm not sure it's going to work.

Yes, and by announcing to the world that they’ve submitted the app and putting up that timer it’s like they are daring Apple to reject it. I own a small business (art gallery) where artists submit their work. If one of them pulled something like this they’d get the axe immediately – no one is going to bully me into carrying their work. Apple should take the same stance as a message to others. After awhile (and an apology) they could resubmit in a more appropriate fashion.

If the artist gets pulled, they go to another gallery. Simple.

If your iPhone App gets rejected, where do you go? Nowhere.

Wow, that's pretty much an a**hole move by Opera Software. If Apple were my company I'd reject the app in about 10 sceonds.
Why? Opera has a product they want on iPhone and Touch, so they've submitted the application.
My thoughts exactly. Even if we were to agree with sharkinfested's view we'd simply be dealing with one a**hole company contesting another a**hole company's policies. What's the real difference? Besides, Apple has become such a pro at bullying other companies that they probably won't ever formally reject it and just leave it in limbo forever.

It honestly sounds like you have a chip on your shoulder. Otherwise, if you don't run your gallery like Apple runs their app store why would anyone even need to pressure you in the first place?

[T]hat kind of passive monitoring is illegal for calls within the US.
That's the funny thing about our legal protections. They only protect us when the citizens who live under them actively demand it. Just sitting on our bums assuming our rights are still being enforced without our personal involvement will leave us with little more than a bunch of unenforced paperwork. The law is only as vigilant as the citizens who live under it.

Cute, so I guess your artists haven't actually painted anything until you agree to display it? Where is this art gallery of yours anyway? I do a lot of traveling and I've love to see what all the fuss is about.

I think you may have that backwards, as in monopolies are only illegal if their status is used for anti-competitive business practices.

Steve Jobs would have to turn into a completely charmless, clueless moron to gain that particular officialdom.
I don't consider Jobs to be clueless at all, but I've never seen him as charming in the slightest. And, honestly, I didn't see much in the way of foresight during the iPad event. I was hoping to be blown away but it turned out to be a surprisingly hum-drum affair that left me with little reason to explore the device any further.

Outstanding performance by Opera mini, makes Safari look like Internet Explorer. I really believe that if this app does not get accepted, that iphone users like myself will be settling with the 'poor man's browser'. Go on Apple, stop behaving like a bunch Nazis and embrace open source, doing so will help you defeat the dark side of the force.

Since no one else is, I will be the one to point out that you are an idiot. I'm sorry, but it's true. There are so many things wrong with this I will break them down one at a time.

1) The performance does seem good, BUT let's wait until an unbiased third party does this test, or we can see it in real-time in front of us. I could doctor that video myself, so Opera surely could.

2) Comparing Apple to the Nazi regime lessens the severity of what the Nazis did. You still have choice, freedom of religion, and no fear of death from Apple. Please refrain from making such irresponsible, sensationalist remarks in the future.

3) WebKit IS open-source.

4) Opera is NOT open-source.

*eyeroll*

If this browser and its compression scheme break javascript and AJAX type operations it will limit the modern "web experience" far more than its lack of Flash. But that's just the opinion of one web developer....

If it works as well as it does in that video, safari just got pwned...

It looks good when you've only got one iPhone accessing Opera's servers. I wonder how fast it would be if you had a few million iPhone's accessing their servers at the same time.

Indeed I probably should have said uncharismatic rather than charmless, and on the iPad event, I couldn't agree more; it was the same old routine and the same old adjectives used in the iPhone launch.

As is, I was alluding to a comparison with Steve Ballmer, and whatever way you look at it, Steve Jobs isn't quite as low in the credibility food chain as Ballmer is, yet.

I don't necessarily believe their side-by-side speed test in the Youtube video...why do the iPhone 3GS models show "VEN..." in the carrier display (top left of the screen)? I tested my iPhone 3GS on the same page over Edge in Safari using AT&Ts network....(shockingly?) mine loaded significantly faster than the one shown in the video.

Real web, full internet - javascript (and all javascript reliant technologies, ie AJAX) are mostly broken using this server-side rendering scheme. Dare I say it - The one web technology that is used more than flash (which is also not supported).

Lack of security - There is no end to end encryption. All secure sites are routed to Opera's proxy server, unencrypted, and re-encrpyted to be sent to your phone. Any account numbers, credit cards, SSNs, etc that you send to a secure site will be viewable by Opera.
