As much as I'd love to see Opera on the iPhone, It's extremely likely it won't make it on there.

Apple wants its users to use Safari on all machines. In fact it might be part of a bigger thing that Apple is trying to do with the future (getting people used to Safari)

The only way I see Apple letting Opera on is if, they feel the need to let somthing "go" because they've been getting a lot of heat lately, and something like this would make a lot of epople happy.

Im sure in iPhone 4 Apple will make Safari super fast as well, but right now I just don't see them allowing it.

Nice interface, finally a real web browser. Can't wait to see it on a ipad.
You do realise that it isn't actually a "real" web browser and that it can't do the "full" internet? In fact it can render less of the "full" internet than mobile Safari, and is insecure as well.

Why? Opera has a product they want on iPhone and Touch, so they've submitted the application.

Yes, and by announcing to the world that they’ve submitted the app and putting up that timer it’s like they are daring Apple to reject it. I own a small business (art gallery) where artists submit their work. If one of them pulled something like this they’d get the axe immediately – no one is going to bully me into carrying their work. Apple should take the same stance as a message to others. After awhile (and an apology) they could resubmit in a more appropriate fashion.

Agreed, and Apple (and Steve Jobs) do not react well to that sort of provocation.

No pinch-to-zoom = what' the point?

The Opera browser for iPhone is lacking the most important feature for any web app on this device: the ability to zoom into a page.

The beauty of Safari on the iPhone was that standard (non-mobile) websites became useable on a phone. Without pinch-to-zoom, the functionality is going to be very limited.

I don't know. I think Opera have tried to get as much news coverage as possible pre-release so it will make Apple look bad if they reject it. I have to say, it really does look good, but I don't know if it will be able to match the convenience of Safari, seeing as it stays loaded even after leaving it. Plus, I'm never on 2G network; I want to see a comparison on 3G and WiFi. I would also like to see what it is like if the compression is turned down.

Apple doesn't give a crap about looking bad. It will reply with a duplicate function and not real performance of current iPhone 3G S anyways. In addition, Apple will pick apart the app and replicate its functions on iPhone OS 4.0. Opera just determined a better way for Apple to design its browser for the iPhone.

Oh, and look how pretty our iPad is...

I say Apple accepts it when hell freezes over, or when the DOJ says it's investigating Apple's monopolies.

So, in the past, Microsoft was sued for a little as placing Internet Explorer on all copies of Windows. Now, Apple not only just places Safari on all their copies of Mobile OS, but also restricts placing other browser competitors on it. How can they be exactly allowed this? Can someone fill me in?

Now, I know there technically are other browsers for the iPhone, but these browsers are certainly no true competitors. They are all produced by no-name developers and are all just derivations of Safari.

Bully? Who's bullyng apple? It seems to me that they are PROMOTING their app. Would you really "axe" an artist if they promoted their artwork outside of your gallery?

Unless you elaborate your claims... you are just proving you're just a fan whose job is bsing about everything which may threaten Apple's monopoly...
Then... explain what you mean with "real" web, "full" internet and lack of security because I don't see it...

Safari works fine for me, i see no reason to use anything else, but of course ill give it a try to see how fast it is, and if it will stay fast also after a couple of days ;-).

The NSA most certainly does not record everything that happens on the internet. There isn't a database in the world big enough for such a task. lol

That's like the people who think that all of our phones calls are being listened to every day. Like the NSA has 200 million employees sitting on phone tapping devices all day long. lol

You should take a look at this for a good read.

I hope you are not using the unencrypted websites to speed up rendering, which means poeple couldn't use this for sensitive information such as online purchases and banking, otherwise, you have some explaining to do

No...server-side rendering

Opera on my B Berry

I've got Opera on my BBerry Bold. Basically it loads so slowly I give up on any web page that I'm trying to reach before I get there. Of course, the same goes for native BBerry browser and Bolt. So it probably says more about me being on AT&T, using a BBerry and living in NYC. Basically no portable internet for me until the iPad comes out. (I don't have an iPhone because work gives me and pays for the service for my BBerry and free beats the increased functionality of the iPhone, but only just barely.)
Anyway, based on my experiences with Opera, I am skeptical that it is that much faster than Safari. It seems like they could have pushed through those NY Times pages faster and gotten to second pages or zoomed in and started reading earlier rather than waiting for the web page to "officially" be finished loading. So they kind of skewed the results there.

Until you actually get a clue about how things like ECHELON work, you should probably refrain from laughing at others.

If I install MacSpeech dictate on my late 2006 MBP I can get it to listen out for predefined keywords and then spring into action when it recognises one - but shhhh, don't tell the NSA, or they might figure out that they don't need to employ 200 million people to physically listen to phone conversations

Well sir, you've certainly creeped me out(/inspired sci-tech fantasy plots) a little bit after reading that ECHELON report. I do know that all international calls are monitored for these keyword triggers, but that kind of passive monitoring is illegal for calls within the US.

And now you've gone and increased my "level of interest" amongst any security organizations! Interesting read, if not a little paranoid. I'm assuming it's meant for people with more to hide than me.

crude

Not wanting to come across as a pedant, but their HTML rendering is utterly crap - compare the full-page Times layout on both screens. And this is a best case example? I'd expect better from server-side processing...

I appreciate the will power behind it, "up against the beast" and all that... but as far as I can see it's not as big a deal as everyone's making it out to be. It's just parsing clicks, and unlike Safari, they know everything you do because of it. Privacy settings aren't going to help you with this.

I am 99% sure that Apple will reject this and they will take as much time as possible to do that so they can say "we were thinking really hard for the past 4 month and unfortunately we could not approve this" Bwhaha.. Unfortunately for you I have CYDIA !!! And pretty sure would be able to download it from there

They aren’t promoting their app – it hasn’t been accepted yet so right now there is no app to promote. They are essentially saying to the world “We submitted our app to Apple, now let’s see if they have the guts to accept it.” The timer is the real bully move.
Yes, if an artist did that to me they wouldn’t get in my gallery. As far as promoting their work elsewhere I wouldn’t have a problem at all, but that isn’t what’s going on here.

I am all for privacy and do everything I can to protect mine. However, I primarily use my iphone for reading blogs like this one. I could care less if Opera wishes to crunch the data on the blogs I read.

The thing that nobody else has mentioned is how much data consumption this will save with the server side rendering..

I travel A LOT and when you are getting charged $8+ per MB while roaming, using Safari to load pages like the NYT shown in the video, it's a very very expensive business!!

If this gets approved, it will save lots of people a lot of money!! I can't wait!
