Oppo shows a cool innovation that will hopefully be included in all phones from all manufacturers in the near future and all I see is 3 pages of arguing if Apple is behind or not. Can't we all just enjoy innovation, whether it be from Apple, Oppo, Samsung or whomever.

Apple isn’t behind on anything. If you think about it, Face ID was the first of its kind to offer 3-D facial mapping before any other manufacture even introduced their version of Face ID. The reality is, some of these new features that are offered by other competitors maybe the first, but they may not be as refined if Apple does release their version of a Camera under the display. Either way, the ‘end goal’ is competition is a good thing, and that strives for each manufacturer to think differently.

What's so much more advanced about the OnePLus 7 over, say, the iPhone XR?

HDR no-notch super-hires screen, with 90Hz refresh rate, so everything is so amazingly smooth
(you must see it to understand). Sorry, Xmax looks like a toy next to it, XR? don't even bring it...
Charging is super fast, I get almost full in 20 minutes. Completely changed my charging habits.
Great, great OS, full flexibility, a great file system. A great camera, so much better than Apple's.
So much more it's not even funny.

As an Apple fan, I feel like I lose faith every single year.

After 12 years of iPhones I lost it and promised myself "enough is enough". I was living under a rock.

A good version of Android - like OnePlus is much much better than iOS.
And a great modern phone is much much better than the same old same old iPhone...
Don't even start the price conversation...

So much overengineering from so many manufacturers when the obvious solution is to just get rid of the front camera altogether.

Video calling is a convenient feature but who really uses it on a regular basis? And the sooner we kill the pouty selfie the better.
Well I'm certainly glad you're not the one calling the shots there.

I am always confused when people claim first is not the best, however if Apple released something first like FaceID, then it is the best. Maybe these fan's are blinded that another company cannot release something refreshing and with time will improve upon it.

These users forget TouchID Gen 1, it was slow and not very accurate. Compare that to Gen 2, which is excellent. Apple also learning and makes improvements from its implemented technology, the fact being nothing is perfect from it's initial release as you have a limited data set to work with. FaceID on iPad Pro for example works in all orientations, which on iPhone X/XS/Max/XR only works in a single orientation. To me on iPhone it is a step back in this regard as TouchID would unlock in all orientations. Will Apple improve on this and adopt iPad Pro's FaceID unlock orientation, I sure hope so. Plus the angle to scan require improvements too.

FaceID iPhone gen 1
FaceID iPad Pro gen 1.5
Awaiting FaceID gen 2.0
? Apple wasn’t the first to incorporate Facial recognition on Phones and nobody said it was. The critics got this wrong about the fans of the products. What Apple did release however was very good with Face ID. They tend to release last but be the best first, touch id gen 1 was the best at the time it was released.

There's nothing special about Fake ID which will turn out to be another 3D Touch gimmick that will removed eventually.

But why is it cliche to say Apple's behind? Especially if it's true. Even if this tech is a year off, Oppo showing it off does two things. 1.) It shows that the technology is available and that a Chinese company, specifically OPPO is at the forefront of delivering it. Even Apple is "secretly" working it too, it doesn't appear that way. Which leads to 2.) when and if Apple does decide to adopt this technology, in consumers eyes (and the media-at-large) it will be "oh, Apple's finally catching up." Samsung has been touting that for years and it made them the number one smartphone manufacturer in the world. Basically, Samsung's like we did a stylus (wacom style) on a smartphone first, we did big screens before big screens were cool, hey, we did curved glass first too, etc. etc.

Point is Apple was known as the company who brought new tech to the market first, now it seems that they are too damn concerned with how thin they can make their products (by removing features and ticking off their fan base) while keeping profit margins at record highs. Every year the new hardware basically looks the same, while giving us one or two incremental new features that consumers wanted the year before but Apple withheld it to make sure you adopt this year. All the while, we have to hear Phil Schiller claim that this year's iPhone is the best iPhone they've ever made. Like anyone would expect them to make the second best iPhone.

Apple needs to stop playing the " we like secrets game" or at least get in front of the changing times, China is moving at breakneck speeds with new tech, from pop up camera (not my thing), under the display fingerprint scanners, better camera tech, flexible displays, even if they are years away, we need to see something to tease it.

As an Apple fan, I feel like I lose faith every single year. Having the iOS 13 beta, I was all pumped the first day, that dark mode is cool. But at the end of the day, I'm tired of looking at the same UI I've had since 2007, just flatter. I know the old mantra, if it's not broken, don't fix it. But at some point, you need to refine the experience. Toyota sells a Camry for 3-5, during which they may change the headlights or taillights, add some new options, then boom, they drop an entirely new design, even if the old design was well received and still selling well. When I see fan concepts of what iOS could be, that shows a new, refined UX/UI, I get so frustrated that people in their home office are producing a better-looking experience than Apple's own talent.

Sorry for the long post, but this topic just set off a domino effect of why Apple is falling behind, while expecting it's "loyal" fans to keep buying their products, like a $1,000 display stand. The groan of that crowd spoke volumes, the question is, did Apple hear them and do they even care?
What exactly did Apple bring to the market first? Hasn’t it always been apples MO to not be first? Also these Chinese companies have the luxury of not needing to produce at the volumes Apple and Samsung do.

Pretty incredible to release new 2019 iPhones with the huge ugly notch when Oppo or OnePlus 7 Pro
are so much more advanced and 2x cheaper. I got my OnePlus 7 Pro a month ago and it's really really hard
to pick up my iPhone and not to feel sorry for those guys. It just looks and feels so old today.
How is it gonna feel in late 2020?

You really need to stop this silly comparison. The notch is a non-issue, for one. Second, it houses the FaceID camera, not just the selfie camera.

It's pretty pathetic that people demand edge-to-edge, Apple delivers, with a minor compromise, then they bitch about the compromise. Some people will never just be happy.

Where's Apple ? Oh right they are still stuck with adding 4 cameras to the back of the phone.

There's nothing special about this Fake News comment which has turned out to be another unfounded, non-scientific claim in a YouTube video.

Face ID learns over time. It gets more and more precise with each scan. That video fails to provide concrete details on when Face ID was set up on that phone, for example.

I say get what you like and that meets your requirements. It’s hard to feel sorry for those guys, what with raking in the bucks and all. But hey, horses for courses.

We hear you, but don't all need to agree with you. Android being better than iOS is purely subjective, and highly dependent on the hardware running it.

We're glad you are finally "free" of your rock. Enjoy.

WHY is it so important to so many people not to have a forehead/chin on a phone that contains buttons/sensors?

Most of the area at the top and bottom of those "bezel-less" screens only give the illusion of functional space anyway, and introduce so many compromises for development and layout it's ludicrous. a screen of a certain size and resolution is the same whether you add a forehead and/or chin on or not... I don't get why it's so taboo now.

Oppo is not a typical Chinese tech company; they actually do r&d and make premium quality products.
The notion of "typical" Chinese tech company must evolve. Many of them do a lot of research. For example, Huawei spends on R&D more than Apple.

"be the best first"? What does it even mean? The first is the best by definition (because there is no competitors yet). The first won't be the best indefinitely because someone will improve on it. But the same is true for all other generations. Whenever Apple comes with their version someone will eventually do better too. So, the only special thing about Apple here is that they are rarely the first.

Chinese mobile maker Oppo today unveiled its solution to the ubiquitous smartphone display notch - the "word's first" Under-Screen Camera (USC).

oppo-under-screen-camera-e1561543770918.jpeg

The fullscreen display-enabling technology was demonstrated to the public at Shanghai's Mobile World Congress, following a teaser earlier this month.

According to Oppo, the selfie camera is embedded under a section of the display that's made of a highly transparent custom material with a special pixel structure, which enables light to pass through to the lens.

The selfie camera is also said to be larger than other front-facing cameras, featuring a wider aperture lens in front of the sensor.

The company has already admitted that putting a camera under the screen will make it harder to match the quality of an unobstructed smartphone camera.

To compensate, however, Oppo said it has developed software algorithms that address haze, glare, and color cast issues, resulting in pictures that are "on par with mainstream devices."

We won't know how accurate that claim is until the tech hits the market, and it's still not clear exactly when the under-screen camera will debut in a consumer product, but the company says it plans to launch a device featuring its USC "in the near future."

This isn't the first time Oppo has tried to innovate in the mobile camera space. The company in February introduced a 10x optical zoom camera system for smartphones, and just last month unveiled its latest flagship OnePlus 7 Pro phone, which features a bezel-free display and pop-up selfie camera.

Apple's 2019 iPhones are widely expected to include a triple rear camera system featuring wide, telephoto, and ultra-wide lenses. The display notch, which houses Apple's TrueDepth camera and Face ID tech, will almost certainly remain.

[doublepost=1561571167][/doublepost]Almost by definition, a touch screen has finger prints all over it. That should do wonders for your photography.

The tech is still not fully baked. Hopefully, it can be developed to where image quality is not compromised, but it’s a big step in the right direction.
Image quality is less of an issue for the front facing camera. It has to look good, but doesn’t need to be faultless. Not yet.

This will take a long time to ever go anywhere. It is the equivalent of taking photos through a lattice or a screen door. The camera lens needs to get either a lot smaller to be able to shoot between the pixels, or a lot bigger to let in more light since the pixels are blocking so much of the field of view.

It would probably be easier to perfect fingerprint recognition under the screen.

Since I found out Apple is censoring apps, like Signal, by refusing to approve them to the app store unless they delete what is in Apple's opinion politically incorrect speech, I'm no longer purchasing Apple Products, period.

I don't even use Signal, but Apple has crossed the line. I'll look into Oppo. Seems like a great phone and I can always flash in a nice uncensored OS.

The notion of "typical" Chinese tech company must evolve. Many of them do a lot of research. For example, Huawei spends on R&D more than Apple.
This nonsense keeps being propagated. Does huawei mobile phone division spend more than Apple on r and d, or does the entirety of the corporate conglomerate of huawei spend more than Apple?
"be the best first"? What does it even mean?
You can ascribe your own interpretation.
The first is the best by definition (because there is no competitors yet). The first won't be the best indefinitely because someone will improve on it. But the same is true for all other generations. Whenever Apple comes with their version someone will eventually do better too. So, the only special thing about Apple here is that they are rarely the first.
Since were taking generalities, typically android copies existing tech. So the tech existing and then adapted by android and is typically rough.(Except for buying the tech outright like the Samsung FPS, however moving bezels and pop-up cameras?).

And if Apple sees applicability to the tech it will eventually release it as well.

Definitely get the sense that China is where tech innovations are going to come from over the next decade. A few year's ago, the majority of my tech stocks were in America, now only around 30%.
