My twopenneth: there is a 2 week window this time because of the nature of the product. It's not a phone with a few colours and sizes, it's 3 products, in 2 sizes and a shed load of different strap styles.
Apple didn't know which ones would be popular for pre order and which wouldn't. They've probably guessed at which the popular ones would be and have more stock of those. Thereby those people will get their watch on Friday.

Sort of: by that claim the Friday deliveries would be for what Apple expected to be popular but really were not popular.
Either way let's remember everyone had the 24/4-8/5 window (except some configs which started at 4-6 weeks) which then lengthened as inventory sold out.

I ordered my SS 42 with black sport at around 15:30, and was fully expecting to be in the June gang (or later!). However I'm actually in the 12/5 - 26/5 gang.... so despite ordering 7.5 hours after opening, I was still in the 2nd wave, so to speak.

Yeah my order was through at 8.02 UK time. 42mm SS with link and I just don't think they had that configuration ready to ship and that's why I ended up in the 12/05-26/05
